Student Address, National Taiwan University Commencement 2021
International student Seth Austin Harding from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering
.
最後,我想送給大家「功夫熊貓」裡的一句台詞: "You just need to believe"。

President, professors, and classmates, I'm very honored to be here. Thank you to NTU for giving me this opportunity. My name's Seth Austin Harding, and I'm from the D.C. metropolitan area. I'm going to tell a real story that's personal but that's relatable and what I see as the real me.
What motivated and guided me to take my undergraduate studies in Taiwan? When I was very young, I really loved watching kung fu movies, and when I was 10 years old, I went to the theater to watch "Kung Fu Panda". This became my favorite movie as I felt like the story of the main character Po was one to which I could very much relate. After watching this movie, I decided that I wanted to start learning kung fu, so I went to the United States Wushu Academy. At the time, I began hearing Mandarin on a daily basis, so when I was in high school, I decided to begin formally studying Chinese. It ended up being my Chinese teacher from Taipei who was my favorite teacher who taught my favorite class, so I decided I'd hang out in the Chinese classroom every day and practice lots. By the time graduation came around, I had attained the highest proficiency in Chinese among any non-native speaker in my school. My second favorite class was computer science, and I ended up attaining among the best coding skills in my school. After getting accepted to the school of my dreams -- National Taiwan University -- I felt honored, humbled, and excited; I could now spend time at among the world's finest universities studying Chinese and at the same time advancing my knowledge of computer science.
But when I look back at my freshman year, to be honest with you, I didn't know what I was doing. Despite having taken very many Chinese classes, when I went to the NTU lectures, I understood only about half of what the teachers were saying. Contrary to most people's impressions of an American, I was actually too shy to raise my hand, to ask questions, or to even meet with teachers after class, so I had very few friends at the time. I started to become homesick and depressed. At that time, I found that basketball was the only way I knew of relieving my stress. However, while playing basketball, I had torn my ACL and it would take two surgeries and a year and a half in time to fully recover. At this point, I felt caught between a rock and a hard place. In fact, this was the lowest point of my life, and I didn't know what to do. I felt like my Chinese wasn't good enough, I had been diagnosed with insomnia and ADHD, and I felt like the math taught in America was too simple to allow for me to keep up with my classmates. I was under immense pressure, and at this time, I lost any sense of purpose or direction. Later on, I went to seek help from NTU counseling, from my psychiatrist, and from my department. I reached out to Professor Winston Hsu from CSIE, and he told me this: "Never give up"; it was such an oversimplified way to approach such a complex series of problems, I had thought. However, I pondered these words intensely for one week, and by the end of that week, I had made a firm decision. This would NOT be another example of me giving up. I decided to go all out, to work diligently and passionately on all tasks at hand. This was the turning point of my life; I started to discipline myself to a very high degree. At this time, I met my then-to-become advisors Professor Shih-Wei Liao and Professor Shih-Hao Hung and entered their labs to begin research. Finally, the passion that I had for computer science that I had previously held in high school was kindled again, and I was finally reminded why I loved this field. I began my research life in blockchain and AI, and at the time I entered the lab, I also began creating NTUAI. NTUAI is now a large and highly successful NTU club that is dedicated to the research and public understanding of AI. Welcome one and all to join us; please scan our QR code here.
For a year and a half I haven't returned to America because of covid. But not to worry; I have found my second home, away from home. I love it here in NTU and I cherish all of the things I've had the privilege to experience in Taiwan. I've gone through the most difficult of struggles in my life here, but I've also had the most fortunate and blessed of experiences. To conclude, I'd like to quote a line from "Kung Fu Panda": "You just need to believe". As long as you are willing to adopt an optimistic attitude in facing challenges and hardships, you may become a positive force in changing the lives of those around you as well as your own life. It all depends on how you view it; just like what Po's father says, "there is no secret ingredient. It's just you." Thank you, everyone.

The trip led by @iiiNNO Taiwan to visit Japan startup ecosystem with Taiwan and Hong Kong startups is an intensive one that packed with all kinds of inspirations, challenges, and opportunities that challenged my status quo, allowing me to see myself with more clarity and inspiring me to build the characters my team and I need.
Q: What's your unfair advantage?
This is the most frequently asked question throughout the trip, whether it be in the Slush exhibition or in Fukuoka. I was thinking about some hard skills at first like industrial expertise, patent, etc, but by definition: it is something that can't easily be copied and bought, so the hard skills that can be learned may not really fit the definition.
Instead, it may be the innovative mind, authenticity in caring what you're doing, and the supporting network you’re be able to build, among others. These three were the top three I observed during trip.
The innovative mind.
At Slush Tokyo, you really could feel the huger for knowledge and innovation from the crowd. It’s not just limited to the entrepreneurs but also from the establish, big companies like Panasonic, we met its employees looking for inspiration to innovate the exiting in-car service, and students coming purely for the knowledge & innovative minds outside of their classroom, and myself also got to learn more about Japanese consumer markets through conversations. Keep renovating yourself so you will have room for innovation and the uncertain future.
2. The determination to do the right things right
As of Japan, its eagerness for an innovative future for the country also revealed in their determination to build a startup ecosystem in Fukuoka.
Fukuoka startup city becomes the fastest growing startup hub since it was designated as the national strategic zone to make it an entrepreneur-friendly city. Everyone involved in this mission, whether they are officials or private parties, all devoted themselves wholeheartedly to push the city forward.
In our visit to Fukuoka city hall, the officers were so well prepared to welcome us and even thought ahead what each team might need and took our questions like theirs.
Moreover, the city mayor even took time to meet with us and listened carefully to each teams’ introductions. It was their respectful attitude for the foreign startups and the determination to do the right things right that really moved and inspired me.
3. The supporting network
There’s an old saying that if you wanna go fast, go alone. If you wanna go far, go together. A sustainable startup ecosystem requires the joint forces from the government and the privates. Fukuoka startup city has closed relationship with Startup cafe, an one-stop facility to help startups and new businesses alike with the right resources. This visit they collaborated with iiiNNO Taiwan, Fukuoka startup city, 明星和樂 to arrange an valuable pitching event for us to share ideas and network with the locals. Surprisingly, they didn’t really have cafe at the site, but do have great bar and beer ;)
We also got to visit StartupGoGo, an important connector between the enterprises and the startups, which help smooth their partnerships and accelerate the industrial growth. This visit they even spent the precious weekend time to meet with us and provided helpful insights for us to know more about the Japanese market. Really appreciate their friend ness and kindness to all of us.
After these visits, this same question has been lingering in my mind, what are the unfair advantages of myself, my team, and my country?
Honestly, sometimes I felt like being x-rayed throughout the trip, all the unseen pros and cons of myself and my team were all revealed. It was a tough but exiting experience to me. The hard part was to realize that there were so many problems yet to be conquered, while the exciting part was to unlock the potential.
Luckily, I have a very tolerant cofounder Bo Ray kung, the coolest mentor Orii cofounders that show me what a good leader could be like, the most heartwarming team Taipei Sunny Hostel, the most proactive, passionate, and humble lady @wendy Liu, the healthy and confident Applato cofounder, the most experienced fintech startup insto, and the amazing iiiNNO team that make this amazing trip happened. One of the best thing in the trip were the friendship and teamwork the teams developed and can extend back to Taiwan.
With all these valuable supports and the lessons learned, now I think the answer for my startup Pic a Life 繪本 X 親子 would be as follows.
The unfair advantages of Pic a Life:
1. An innovative and user-centered team: always think for kids, make for families.
2. Our authentic interest and compelling belief in assisting the parents to raise a happy kid with fun reading and love.
3. Have a group of customers and partners and supporters that love us and are willing to join our moment in creating a new way of reading experience to make parent-kids reading together so easy that kids can build the ability to live and to love one another.
So, what are your unfair advantages?

check it out !!
I’m not 100% sure if this is 節目效果but in 2018 there was a time I lived in Hong Kong where I attended an acting class. it was a class made for artists and models
it was before I was known in YouTube as 暗網仔 so to everyone there I was just some kid.
Not only were the excercises very similar to the ones shown in 黃秋生大師班, but my character was so similar to the one of mok chun ming.
In the show his personality is afraid to show his true self, but for me it was being in front of all those ‘famous’ people and having to act. And inexperience as well since everyone else there has already taken a course.
I remember even my walking in a scene was so bad that my teacher made me walk in circles around the classroom and have everyone watch because I didn’t even know how to walk into a scene. And everyone had to judge my walking.
It was embarrassing.
And 黃秋生大師班’s each episodes流程is similar to a acting class.
Each of the 6 students do the 同一個performance then the teacher mocks/critiques/helps them.
I feel this show is a very smart idea because coming from someone who has taken quite a few acting classes, many times actual performances recorded on video is not as 精彩as the raw, 最真performances done in 課堂練習.
So to take these ‘hey 中hey’ and make it into a show shows a 人性化that most other shows don’t have. Because in tv shows and movies bad acting will not be criticized but in acting class, a change of your thought or energy(氣場) is picked up on immediately. So on every level this is 有關 ‘hey中hey’ 的真人show.
It’s only 11 episodes right now and not the end yet I look forward to seeing everyone’s improvement afterwards....
