Sama-Bajau - The Supernormal Tribe That Can Hold Breath For 13 Minutes 🇵🇭🇲🇾🇮🇩🇧🇳
Have you ever heard about someone who can hold his breath for 13 minutes under 70 meters deep water? Yes. it is true. There are some people who have this extraordinary breath-holding ability. And the name of this tribe is Sama-Bajau.
The name collectively refers to related people who usually call themselves the Sama or Samah; or are known by the exonyms Bajau. They usually refers to several Austronesian ethnic groups of Maritime Southeast Asia with their origins from the southern Philippines.
These people remain immersed in the water for several minutes without any diving equipment (underwater breathing apparatus). These people usually live a seaborne lifestyle and use small wooden sailing vessels such as the perahu, djenging, balutu, lepa, pilang and vinta.
Sama-Bajau have sometimes been called the "Sea Gypsies". The Sama-Bajau tribe people are traditionally from the many islands of the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines, coastal areas of Mindanao, northern and eastern Borneo, the Celebes, and throughout eastern Indonesian islands.
Some Sama-Bajau groups native to Sabah (Sabah is a state of Malaysia located on the northern portion of Borneo Island) are also known for their traditional horse culture. British administrators in Sabah classified the Sama-Bajau as "Bajau" and labelled them as such in their birth certificates. Thus the Sama-Bajau in Malaysia may sometimes self-identify as "Bajau" or even "Malay" for political reasons.
Total Population 1.1 million worldwide:
- Philippines: 470,000
- Malaysia: 436,000
- Indonesia: 345,000
- Brunei: 12,000
The Bajau have been a nomadic, seafaring people for most of their history. Many Bajau still practice that same lifestyle to this day, which explains why they are still commonly called "sea gypsies." They chart particularly the waters of the Sulu Sea, off the southwestern coast of the Philippines, and the various seas that surround the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, and Brunei Darussalam.
These are among the most dangerous waters in the world with sporadic policing at best and a very high incidence of open piracy. Yet these Bajau claim never to have wielded weapons — preferring to simply flee from potential attack. They come ashore only to bury the deceased and to live temporarily while making new boats.
Of course the seafaring Bajau make their living from fishing. Those who have abandoned that lifestyle have become farmers and cattle rearers, earning them the local nickname, "cowboys of the east." Indeed their equine skills are well known in this part of the world, and are always to be found displayed in Bajau ceremonial events. Still other Bajau live a lifestyle between nomadic and sedentary, housed in villages on the water, but not far from land.
Freediving associated with these people life on the sea appear to have endowed the Bajau with several genetic adaptations to facilitate their lifestyle. After a long research on them, scientists claim that they have this amazing breath-holding ability because of the changes in genes.
The spleens of these people have become quite large with time. A recent study showed that Bajau spleens are about 50 per cent larger than normal people which letting them store more haemoglobin-rich blood, which is expelled into the bloodstream when the spleen contracts at depth, allowing breath-holding dives of longer duration.
The boat-dwelling Sama-Bajau see themselves as non-aggressive people. They kept close to the shore by erecting houses on stilts, and travelled using lepa, handmade boats which many lived in. These people dive in the sea every day in search of food. Usually they go down to 70 meters in the sea without oxygen. At that depth, they can walk or swim for 13 minutes in one breath. These divers spend 60 percent of their daily activities inside the sea.

Professor powpow:
Professor powpow.
[Hannah Olson]
Fortier.
“My father molested everyone. The happiest he ever made me was lying in his coffin dead. That’s when I knew I was safe.”
Quincy Fortier JR (兒子)
*dying at age 93, molestation charges

Dwyane Wade proved he still has some magic in his 34-year-old body.
Wade scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, making his first 3-pointer of 2016, and the Miami Heat forced their first-round series to a seventh game with a 97-90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night.
Luol Deng was 9 of 14 from the field and finished with 21 points, while Goran Dragic added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Heat, who will host Game 7 on Sunday.
The Heat overcame a playoff career-high 37 points from Kemba Walker to hand the Hornets only their 11th loss of the season at home. Al Jefferson had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Cody Zeller had 12 points off the bench for Charlotte.
With Miami leading by two, Wade hit his first 3-pointer since December with 46 seconds left and added an 18-foot turnaround jump shot over Courtney Lee to help seal the win.
The Hornets missed a golden opportunity to advance to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 14 years.
They trailed the entire second half, never quite able to get over the hump and the Heat made timely shots and grabbed crucial rebounds.
Miami outrebounded Charlotte 46-31.
Walker gave it all he had.
The 6-foot-1 point guard somehow got an up-and-under layup to fall amid the trees, then hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to beat the shot clock and cut the Miami lead to 85-81.
Hassan Whiteside returned to the game with 4:20 left and immediately made an impact, scoring on an offensive rebound. But Walker drove the lane and drew an and-one with 3 minutes to go, sending Whiteside to the bench with his sixth foul. Walker then added a razzle-dazzle step-back jumper to trim the Heat lead to 90-86 with 2:12 left in the game.
After a Miami miss, Walker drove the baseline after for a reverse to cut the lead to two with 1:33 remaining.
After Deng shot an airball on a 3-pointer from the top of the key on Miami's next possession and the Heat were called for a shot clock violation, the Hornets had a chance to tie.
But Walker, who was 14 of 30 from the field, missed a pull-up jumper.
Wade answered with a 3-pointer from the left wing to push Miami's lead back to five with 46 seconds remaining. Jefferson scored off a dish from Walker, but Wade splashed a turnaround jumper from 18 feet over Lee's outstretched hand to push the lead back to five with 19.5 seconds left.
Walker missed a driving layup and Joe Johnson added two free throws the seal the game.
With their season on the line, the Heat shot 60 percent from the field in the first half to open a 59-50 lead.
Deng and Wade led the way, combining for 29 points on 13-of-19 shooting and the Heat dominated the glass, outrebounding the Hornets 23-11.

Allen Iverson was practically going
like 60.
Iverson scored a career-high 58 points -- the most in the NBA
this season -- as he rallied the Philadelphia 76ers to a 112-106
overtime victory over the Houston Rockets.
In his fifth career 50-point game, Iverson scored 14 in the
final seven minutes of the fourth quarter, including two free
throws with 23 seconds left that forced overtime.
In the extra session, Iverson made a jumper, a gutsy 3-pointer
and the clinching free throws as he eclipsed his previous career
high of 54, set January 6, 2001 at Cleveland.
"I have won scoring titles, I've scored 50 points before and I
have won individual awards," Iverson said. "I haven't won a
championship and that is the only thing that I am concerned
with."
Iverson made 21-of-42 shots and 14-of-14 free throws as he fell
two points shy of becoming the 17th player in NBA history -- and
the shortest -- to score 60 points in a game.
"You know something? He has the ultimate green light," Rockets
guard Cuttino Mobley said. "It's hard to stop somebody when
he's got the ultimate green light and when (he) gets hot. He's
one of the best players in the league. Plus, he's fast as all
hell."
The NBA's scoring leader more than doubled his average of 28.2
points and established a league season high, one night after Los
Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant scored 56 points in just three
quarters vs. Memphis.
"We knew when Kobe got 56, he'd have a big game," 76ers coach
Larry Brown said. "He was incredible. He played 50 minutes.
He defended and he just played a phenomenal game."
The outburst was the most by any Sixer other than the legendary
Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain scored a team-record 68 points at
Chicago on December 16, 1967.
The Sixers are 3-2 when Iverson scores at least 50 points. That
does not include two playoff wins over Toronto last year.
"He is just tremendous," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said.
"We were running guys at him. Iverson just shot it before we
could get anyone across the floor. He was winging them from all
over the place. It was a great performance."
Rookie Speedy Claxton scored 16 points for Philadelphia, which
has won five of its last seven games.
"(Claxton) was aggressive every time he received the ball in a
double-team, shot it, and didn't even think about it," Brown
said. "His defense is just incredible."
"The important thing is trying to stay consistent," Iverson
added. "That's what makes a team good. With bad teams, you
knock them off and good teams you try to knock them off. If you
don't, you give the effort and then that carries on to the next
game."
Cuttino Mobley scored 25 points and Kenny Thomas added 20 for
the Rockets, who wasted a 10-point fourth-quarter lead and have
alternated wins and losses in their last 11 games. Houston fell
to 2-3 in overtime.
"We have had a lot of games like this," Tomjanovich said. "Maybe
this is right where we are."
A scoop layup by Iverson moved the Sixers within 88-85 with 6:58
to go. Consecutive 3-pointers by Philadelphia natives Eddie
Griffin and Mobley rebuilt the lead to nine points, but Iverson
made two free throws and a three-point play before a jumper by
Eric Snow made it 94-92 with 2:59 left.
Thomas made two free throws, but Iverson hit the 500th 3-pointer
of his career and took a steal in for a layup, giving the Sixers
a 97-96 lead with 2:05 remaining.
Griffin turned a low-post jumper into a three-point play for a
99-97 edge with seconds to play. Iverson tied it with two from
the line 25 seconds later and the Rockets did not get off a last
shot.
"Nothing ever materialized," Tomjanovich said. "You have to
give Snow a lot of credit. (Moochie Norris) was going to take
it on his own and try to shake the guy and create something."
Iverson's jumper came after two foul shots each by Snow and Matt
Harpring and gave Philadelphia a 105-99 lead with 3:43 to play.
A jumper by Francis got Houston within 105-104, but Iverson hit
a deep pull-up 3-pointer on the next possession.
"It's just frustrating," Griffin said. "He's so small, but he's
fast. He can get a shot off because of his quickness."
A steal by Snow led to a tip-in by Dikembe Mutombo and Iverson
sealed it with two from the line with 23 seconds to go.
Snow and Harpring each scored nine points and Mutombo had eight
and 13 rebounds for the Sixers, who shot 48 percent (43-of-90),
made 24-of-26 free throws and committed just 10 turnovers.
Griffin had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Steve Francis added
13, 10 and seven assists for the Rockets, who shot 48 percent
(41-of-86). Houston made 10-of-20 3-pointers but committed 16
turnovers.
