Hey, last week I did a seminar at Hong Kong, thanks to everyone! By the way here are summarized some of the topics I have been talking about! It is a long list, so when you have time feel free to check it out!
Feel free to share and ask questions!
A big thanks to our Ambassador Ilko Allexandroff Photography for sharing his #OCF #lighting tips and creativity with us at past Monday's seminar!
Attendee Vming Yan was kind enough to summarize his takeaways for the evening.
1. For outdoor shoots, the less I bring and light-weight the better. I usually only bring one camera body, 2 lenses (24/1.4+135/2), 2 to 3 portable flashes, foldable soft box, and small light stands. Very rarely would I use studio strobes and tripod because they are too heavy.
2. Before shooting I first set shutter speed, aperture and ISO. For night portraits I am used to ISO800, sometimes ISO1250 or even higher, aperture at F4. Night portraits can highlight more depth with higher ISO.
3. I prefer spending my time on location with my team, rather than editing at home alone after that! This is especially the case for some interesting hair and make projects it takes more time for the hair / makeup preparations, which takes up most of the time, and the actual shoot is very quick - all done in a few minutes. At
times when it can't be helped I would need to shoot with the light stands and soft box in the image and photoshop it afterwards.
4. When one portalbe flash is underpowered, I will tie a few units together and use them as one unit - it is not far from a studio strobe. Or sometimes when I am using a soft box or other modifiers I would add another flash.
5. I like to use soft box more than studio umbrella because when I add a grid to a soft box the light is more directional. This is what I like. Plus, the soft box can be easily packed into my camera bag.
6. When you shoot spend more time communicating, this will let the model clearly understands photographer's ideas for the shoot. You may also jokes with the model which will create a calm atmosphere. Never say negative things as this will give your model pressure, which doesn't help with the photoshoot. So don't make the model feel bad for the mistakes you might be taking!
7. Familiarize with your gears and remember the placement of every knob. If you can make adjustments of your gear without looking it will streamline your shoot. You will also be able to spend more time facing the model for communication and work on framing your shot.
8. Observe carefully on any possible spots and agnles in a shoot. Find one that no one else has.
9. Using a single flash can create many lighting effects; one light does not mean only one light source. There is always the sun and other sources, such as street lamps and vending machines.
10. Aperture and ISO affects on artifical light while shutter speed on ambient light.
11. Use various colour gels to change colour temperature in the background without affecting the colour of the subject.
12. Many of my works use long exposures with rear curtain flash to create a special effect, especially for night portraits with stars or a flowing stream.
13. Lighting directly from the side or slightly from behind usually adds drama to the picture.
14. I usually shoot alone for outdoor shoots, and as you can image without assistants light stands fall easily by the wind, so I select a flat feet light stand so I can place bags over them to stabilize the stand. Or sometimes I would use an elastic rope from local home hardware store and use it to hang my bag as a stabilizer. It is a great tool as it changes the centre of gravity and it can withstand wind much better.
15. My personal understanding of lights in 5 layers
Layer0: Light from right above the camera (on-camera flash)
Layer1: Off-camera flash in front of model
Layer2: Off-camera flash behind the model
Layer3: Off-camera flash directly behind the model
Layer4: Use of different colours and tones in the background to create a mix of lighting effects
Combination of Layer1 and Layer2: Cross Lighting (mix of natural and artifical lighting)

10 MOST INFLUENTIAL ASIAN SUPERHEROES FROM MARVEL & DC
There are a lot of comic book fans out there, and many of them are Asian. Yet historically, superheroes of Asian descent have been a rare thing in the Marvel & DC universes.
With movies like Captain America Civil War, Batman vs Superman and Deadpool already having broken several box office records this year, superhero movies are only getting more popular.
And you know, you have the first female solo superhero film in quite some time coming out in 2017 with DC’s Wonder Woman, and the first black solo superhero film in some time coming out in 2018 with Marvel’s Black Panther. Makes me wonder when we’ll see the first Asian solo superhero film on the big screen.
But we’re a long ways off because first, we actually need a successful and popular Asian superhero in the comics, and thus far, it’s not clear if we even have one.
Well you be the judge.
1. Jubilee (Marvel)
- arguably the most well-known Asian superhero
- a Chinese-American girl born in LA
- X-Men’s youngest member in the early 1990s
2. Shang Chi (Marvel)
- created in the 1970s, a period in time where people were crazy for Bruce Lee and anything Kung Fu related
- the premiere Asian character of the 70s
- born in China
- son & nemesis of the infamous, wealthy international Chinese crime lord Fu Manchu.
- has no superpowers, but is an expert in all forms of martial arts
- unfortunately as stereotypically Asian as you can get
3. Sunfire (Marvel)
- Japan’s premiere superhero
- just like Shang Chi, an Asian character of overt Asian symbolisms.
- real name, Shiro Yoshida
- born to a mother who suffered radiation poisoning (Hiroshima atomic bomb)
- became a mutant possessing solar radiation powers
4. Atom (DC)
- real name, Ryan Choi
- super smart & gets good grades
- can be quite the ladies’ man
- from Hong Kong
- protege of original Atom, Ray Palmer
- the Atom is a super hero who can shrink to a subatomic size (like Ant-Man)
- pretty noteworthy because first time an Asian guy took over the mantle of an existing superhero with an already established fan base
- too bad he only appeared in 78 issues before being killed off by the assassin, Deathstroke
- his death became the subject of racial controversy as he had been one of the few high profile Asian characters in the DC Universe
5. Batgirl (DC)
- real name, Cassandra Cain
- she’s a halfie, with a white dad and a Chinese mom
- adopted by Bruce Wayne, aka Batman.
- under Batman’s watch, she became Batgirl
- some refer to her as the Asian Batgirl
6. Psylocke (Marvel)
- real name is Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, originally a blonde haired girl from Essex, Great Britain
- a mutant with vast telepathic and telekinetic powers and a long time X-Man.
- had her soul transferred into the body of a Japanese female ninja
- in X-Men: Apocalypse movie she is played by Olivia Munn (Is this another example of whitewashing in Hollywood?)
7. Ms. Marvel (Marvel)
- real name, Kamala Khan, the second Ms. Marvel who made her debut in 2013
- a Pakistani Muslim teenage girl living in New Jersey from a very traditional Pakistani family.
- is an inhuman (a race of superhumans)
- her power makes her able to stretch her body in unimaginable ways
8. Silk (Marvel)
- real name Cindy Moon, a Korean American girl.
- Spiderman was bitten by a radioactive spider but what we didn’t know was, so did another student
9. Hulk (Marvel)
- in 2015 we were introduced to a Korean Hulk.
- real name, Amadeus Cho, a Korean American
- this new Hulk fights gamma monsters while traveling cross country with his sister Maddy
10. Superman
- DC one upped Marvel by making one of, if not, the most iconic superhero of all time Asian.
- Superman is now Chinese!
- a 17 year old kid from Shanghai named Kenan Kong
- you can imagine the outrage this has caused as ‘superman is supposed to be white’ and American

10 THINGS YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE HIROSHIMA ATOMIC BOMBING (& NAGASAKI)
*CORRECTION: In the video, the location of Nagasaki is off. It should be more on the left side of Kyushu island.
1) Godzilla
Godzilla, the giant Japanese dinosaur-looking monster, a worldwide pop culture icon; who’s been in numerous movies.
Why am I mentioning this? Well, Godzilla owes its existence to the atomic bombs. In the aftermath, with the devastation still fresh in the Japanese consciousness, Godzilla was created as a metaphor for nuclear weapons and their destructive capabilities.
2) The Korean Casualties
An enormous number of Koreans also perished in the blast. In fact, around 25% of casualties were Koreans. Korea was under Japanese rule at the time so there were many drafted or conscripted Koreans in Hiroshima & Nagasaki. It’s unfortunate that the Korean victims of this tragedy have often been neglected
3) Close Call Kyoto
Today’s Kyoto landscape would have been greatly altered, and not for the better, if the Americans had gone about their original plan. The targets were in fact supposed to be Hiroshima & Kyoto. However, the US Secretary of War at the time, Henry L Stimson, insisted on sparing the city
4) The Pamphlet Warnings
Just prior to dropping the Atomic bombs, the US Airforce released pamphlets or leaflets from their planes warning Japanese citizens of the impending destruction. They were largely ineffective.
5) The Little Boy & The Fat Man
These were the American codenames of the two atomic bombs.
6) The American Casualties
12 American airmen were captured, then taken to the Chugoku Military Police Headquarters in Hiroshima, where the American weapon of mass destruction indiscriminately took them out.
7) Go
An important Go tournament was held in the suburbs of Hiroshima, about 5 km from ground zero; a pivotal match up was ongoing between champion Hashimoto and the challenger Iwamoto. When the atomic bomb went off, people were injured, buildings were damaged, and the game came to an immediate halt. Fortunately no one died as tournament officials had earlier moved the game away from the blast radius after coming across the American pamphlets.
The players took this opportunity to have a quick lunch break. Afterwards on the same day, they finished the game. White won.
8) Operation Meetinghouse
As devastating as the atomic bombs were, it didn’t even rank as the most destructive bombing event of WW2. That title goes to the deathly firebombing of Tokyo by the US Air Force, also known as Operation Meetinghouse. This was estimated to be the single most destructive bombing attack not just in Japan, but in history.
9) The Flame Of Peace
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built in dedication to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in the world to suffer a nuclear attack. In the park, sits The Flame of Peace which has burned continuously since 1964, and will remain lit until all nuclear weapons are removed from the world and the planet is free from nuclear threat.
10) The Improbable Survivor
Tsutomu Yamaguchi worked for the Mitsubishi company, and on August 6th, 1945, he was away from home on a business trip in Hiroshima.
He witnessed the Little Boy dropping from the sky and the explosion ruptured his eardrums, blinded him, and left him with serious burns. But he was alive.
The very next day, he dragged his body to a station, made his way out of Hiroshima and back to his hometown. At home, he finally received treatment for his wounds.
Two days later, despite being seriously injured and heavily bandaged, he informed Mitsubishi that he was back from his Hiroshima business trip and ready to report to work. So, he went to work, as if nothing major had happened.
Yamaguchi was lucky to have survived the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb. However, he was unlucky that he went back home..
..to Nagasaki..
