Interview with A Founder: Alvin Kwock (Co-founder of OneDegree )
By Sophie Chiu (AppWorks Associate)
Alvin Kwock is the Co-founder of OneDegree, an alumnus from AppWorks Accelerator #16. Founded in 2016, OneDegree is a technology startup aiming to become the next-generation insurance industry leader in Asia. The company hit a major milestone in April this year when it received a virtual insurance license, making it one of the first batch of firms authorized to sell insurance through online-only channels in Hong Kong. Since then, OneDegree has launched the city’s first pure medical insurance for pets, which will be followed by cyber and health insurance products and more.
【Having such a fruitful year, can you recall the most challenging / rewarding moment that you have come across during your start-up journey?】
Our earliest days, fundraising and try to win trust from potential investors, were definitely the most challenging. In order to operate legally, we had to apply for an insurance license, which required at least US$30 million of paid-in capital. We met with many investors and there were some who turned us down immediately, telling us there was no way we can raise that amount at a pre-revenue stage. However, we were tenacious and just kept pitching. One investor in particular said no to us 3 times, but we eventually won their support on the 4th attempt. Our technology is our moat, and we worked hard to demonstrate to investors and partners the revolutionary nature of what OneDegree can offer. A big insurance firm, which approached us about a partnership, told us that they could spend US$100 million and still not be able to replicate the powerful insurance core platform OneDegree has built. Getting to where we are today was not easy, hurdle after hurdle, but an incessant belief in our mission helped us get through all the challenges.
【As a founder, what would be some advice for newcomers starting their business?】
Creative thinking is often emphasized as the most important skill or attribute for entrepreneurs. However, in my own experience, building trust is even more important. Trust is an effective tool to facilitate transfer of your creativity to the people who work with you. Over half of our employees are shareholders of OneDegree, which contributes to an environment of trust and collaboration. I believe that a team can only be successful if it plays together. To build trust with clients, we have to show them that we have the ability to deliver and to consistently provide them with something of value. We demonstrated this through our debut insurance product. For example, we pledged to pay out claims within 2 days – much faster than traditional insurers – and we’ve managed to deliver on that.
【Eventually, what impact do you want to have?】
OneDegree’s goal is to become the gold standard in the insurance industry. We aspire not only to serve customers of our insurance business, but also to maximize the impact through partnerships with like-minded insurers, banks and eCommerce channels globally. We want to make the insurance experience entirely seamless for our customers, and we will be relentless about this. Settling claims within 2 days may sound fast today, but it is not too hard to imagine that in a few years’ time the process may only take minutes, or even seconds, to complete. We strive to be at the forefront of change, helping insurance companies become more efficient and making it easier for all end users to get the protection they need, with a simple click or tap on their devices. This is the impact I want to have.

https://youtu.be/1g6Ca_UjOrs
https://salon.jp/child_gift
https://salon.jp/nishino
https://salon.jp/tamura

[the risk of modern young employees carrying]
Before you enter the chase, let me have about 2 status reports.
The first one was also on tv asahi's program yesterday, but from here to the release of the movie ′′ a town ′′ I'm going to go to the tv for xin nishino.
https://youtu.be/1g6Ca_UjOrs
I haven't retired from showbiz, but it's a work that takes time to make a piece and deliver...... it's quite a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of
There is also a reason why ′′ there is no talent as a role ′′ (tears)
So, basically, my schedule is going to go to the atelier, or I'm going to do a crazy old man who is mumbling alone while walking around the park...... and probably from the neighbor," he's a job I'm worried that there is?"
I think I'm working in case, but if you don't get on the table, it's going to be.
It's just that this time, I'm going to be on a lot of shows, so I'm thinking that the neighbors will be able to feel relieved too.
Also, as soon as the air information comes out, we will report it.
Next is the second status report.
I want to be a good person, and I'm doing a lot of support activities, but if I'm doing that, I'm going to have a good time with God, ′′ I want to cooperate too ′′ Please come, the result," the project called ′′ Children's gift ′′ in a town has stood up.
[Children's gift]
https://salon.jp/child_gift
This is the ′′ Sub-Sook of support ′′ called ′′ giving a picture book to children around the world," from your own pocket money, from the sales of the company, every month 2000 There are now 846 people who support the yen.
In other words, 846 picture books each month will reach the children. It's every month.
It's really amazing that this is being completed, and I think it's better to be featured somewhere.
This is how the other day, I present a picture book to all of you from the 1th grade to the 3th grade of the ′′ and elementary school ′′ in Okinawa.
The pattern of the time is to be issued as an activity report to the supporters group of ′′ Children's gift ′′ in a town.
′′ Children's gift ′′ is an activity that you think you should continue for life as long as there is a demand, so if you are interested, please try it.
Well, that's how today's chase.
The revision of the labor standards law has been held in chocolate chocolate, and it has been revised this April, and the limit of the outside labor is ′′ 360 hours a month ′′
Beyond it, there is penalties.
By the way, general working hours are 8 hours a day.
When I get this to me, I'm mostly working about 18 HOURS TO 20 hours a day.
If it'S 18 hours, in light of the labor standards, my 1th time outside labor is 10 hours.
300 hours a month.
It's 3600 hours in a year.
But the limit of the labor standards law is 45 hours a month. Isn't it 360 hours a year?
People who work properly are only working for my 1/10 hours in time outside labor.
Of course, it's not a story that ′′ if you have time to work, it will be a good result but as long as it's not a person who is good at using time, I think that the result of the work is generally proportional to the labor time.
′′ No no, I want to sharpening my work time and make time with my family if you say, it's different from the story.
It's one form of happiness, and it's not what others can say.
It's not so much, I think that the labor standards law is quite a messy hurdle for people who think it's simple to ′′ want to upstart ′′
Or another one.
Yesterday, our tamura p posted an article called ′′ you guys don't disrespecting ′′ in the online salon.
[Ryo Nishino Institute of entertainment]
https://salon.jp/nishino
It's a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of So, I'm matching an adult called ′′ I want you to present the movie ′′ a in the town ′′ and ′′ I want to present the movie ′′ a in the town,"
By the way, if you don't match during the period, I'll give you a present to the children's facility with a streamline, so I'm going to have a 100-Year-old child facility that raised my hand %, movie ′′ a town ′′ Advance tickets will be present.
So, for example, if you get your hands from the ○○ Kindergarten in Aichi Prefecture, you will soon be able to put out the ′′ right to support kindergarten ′′ on the return of crowdfunding, and," new return Is out to report that I sook the return, made the image, put on the link of the support, and throw it to each prefecture meeting in the salon.
If you have a hand from aichi's kindergarten, you will be able to post the ′′ Aichi Prefecture Association ′′," ○○ I got a hand from kindergarten ~"
I think I have a feeling that I want to support my hometown.
So, I found the middle of making movies and things, and I've been doing the work for a long time...... I know all my young staff who are doing the work.
On the other hand, the thunder fell from tamura p...... well, in short, ′′ why don't you let ryo nishino do clerical work......
′′ I know how hard ryo nishino is making a movie right now. Let me focus on the production, let me rest. Why don't you guys pretend not to look at ryo nishino, who is working on clerical work!" the big thunder has fallen (lol)
My company is the motto of ′′ everything happening in the company is a story even in business contact, it's a salon article, but this time the thunder has fallen.
Tamura p is not an employee of Nishino Co Ltd. So it was said as a ′′ outfield opinion,"
[Tamura Salon]
https://salon.jp/tamura
This kind of thing is now treated like ′′ power harassment so you can't quite say it.
It's just that when I think of the future of young people, it's absolutely important to say ′′ I'm going to spell with a kickin ' love," and I'm also a lot of people who have been able to do a lot of things to do with my senior, but now I'm I'm sorry.
It's a bit grossed out when I think that I was 40 years old without being there.
My young man is tough, so I'm going to hold an event called ′′ a meeting to talk about being angry by tamura p," (the best! ()
I'm about to put together a story.
Now, the 20 s are pretty protected by the revision of the labor standards law and the right to say ′′ power harassment ′′ (I think this is such a great thing!!)," I think it's better to figure out that it's hard to wake up the gekokujo by labor time, and it's too big to be a risk of ′′ being a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit of a bit
These are safety and trade-off relationships, so try to make it well there.
I'm really rooting for you.

To all the Front Liners that are defending Malaysia from the COVID-19:
I was told that some of you are nearing your break down point under the tremendous stress at this juncture of time. I just wanted to write this letter to express my utmost gratitude and concerns to all of you.
How are you, our dearest and respected Front Liners? Do you eat well? Do you sleep well? I do hope that while you are giving all out to care for the patients, do not forget to take care of your own well being too.
You might have all sorts of worries at this point of time. The risk of being infected, the increasing concern on the insufficiency of our country’s medical workforce and equipment, the anxiety (or, desolation) as shown on your family member’s faces, the unreasonable scolding you got from the patients’ family outside of the hospital, the deprivation of rest and sleep....
The stress is simply too much to mention.
Who can deal with such stress? I can even imagine how quickly your fears in reaching the boiling point when you try to think about the possibility of something scarier and harder to control is coming soon.
I am sorry that I can’t be there as your companion at the front line. But, as a Medical Social Worker that had been working in the medical organisation for 8 years, I have some words for you:
1. Please allow yourself to be sad and to cry. Let your tears manifest your inner grief. Feeling grieved do not mean we are weak or defeated, it simply means our hearts are tender enough to feel. Very often, in the face of an extreme challenge what we need is not being strong, but being resilient.
A windstorm can easily uproot the strongest tree, but it could never break a resilient grass. In the time of danger, please pray for our hearts to remain supple and resilient, instead of asking ourselves to be tough and strong.
2. Please give yourself enough stability to live life as ‘normal’ as possible. Regardless how busy you are with your duty in the hospital, allocate a time slot to do something that you like to stabilise and settle down your emotion, even if it is only for 15 minutes. You may choose to watch a drama series, browse through Facebook, play video game etc.
Do not lose grip of your normal routines. The best way to keep our emotions stable and grounded is by maintaining and hold on to at least a small part of our normal life.
3. Stay connected to your energy source. For example, keep a family photo in your pocket, replay the encouraging voice message sent by your beloved family members, motivate each other in your university friends' chat group, perform your daily religious rituals, look out to the sun or sky from the window etc.
While your work duty requires you to contribute your energy continuously, you need to create more channels that replenish the positive energy for yourself.
4. Stay alone. Please allow yourself, as well as your workmates, some time and space to be alone, even if it’s only for 5 minutes. Time to be alone is especially important in hard time like this. Only when you are alone, those anxieties that are associated to and magnified by the crowds can be diluted, or eliminated from your mind.
When you are alone, practise deep breathing. No matter where you are, remember you should always take deep breaths. You can pray to your God, or put your hands on the chest to express how grateful you are for the fact that you have not given up on yourself and the country that you call it home, Malaysia. You had fought hard to carry on and provide the best of yourself to everyone in the country.
5. Please accept the truth that we are limited, helpless and powerless. Honestly speaking, this is the hardest hurdle to overcome. From my past experience working with doctors and nurses, I realised the most difficult part is for them to get over the guilts, self-blame, regrets and anger that come along with a patient’s pass on.
I do not know what should I say or do to stop you from the guilts and remorse. To a big extent that reflects how much you care about your patients, your profession and each and every life. I can see your dedication and efforts. I am thankful for your compassion in every patient you cared of. Nevertheless, I still hope that you can try to acknowledge the part of fact that you are limited, helpless and powerless. Only if you could acknowledge it, you can walk over it and make the subsequent steps in your journey.
6. Please ask for help proactively. When you feel that you’re reaching your stress threshold and can’t take it any more, do ask help from other people. Keep 3 important contact numbers readily in hand that you can call anytime and anywhere, to speak out, to cry out, to vent out, and to give you instant boost of energy in order not to giving up.
Last but not least, I really want to say:
To all our beloved front liners, when you are seeing your patients falling critically ill or passing on one after another, please do not be despaired or losing faith. Though you can’t see us, but I hope these words will make you feel us, who are always standing by you, anytime, anywhere.
We wish to give you a pat on your shoulders, and tell you, mate, THANK YOU. Sincerely from all of us, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Even with the slightest streak of hope, our pain will be made less painful.
"THANK YOU. You stay work for us, we stay home for you."
