[#ShareforGood] Du học từ cấp ba - tại sao không?

Ngay lúc mình bắt đầu gõ những dòng chữ này thì khoảng thời gian 4 năm học cấp 3 ở Mỹ của mình sắp kết thúc.

Mình đã đi du học Mỹ từ năm lớp 9. Đó là một quyết định khá khó khăn khi mình nhận được học bổng của trường The Village School, nhưng ba mẹ mình đã lựa chọn đưa mình qua Mỹ học. Sau đây là những chia sẻ và review về ngôi trường cấp 3 này cho các bạn đang có ý định học nhé!

The Village School là một trường tư ở Houston, Texas. Trường có chương trình học cho Tiểu học, Trung học cơ sở, Trung học phổ thông. Điểm mạnh của trường nằm ở việc có rất nhiều học sinh đến từ các khu vực khác nhau trên thế giới, mình đã được làm quen với các bạn ở châu Phi, Ba Lan, Brazil, Trung Quốc,... cùng với chương trình học rất đa dạng: chương trình học ELL, chương trình học Trung học Mỹ và chương trình IB (ở Việt Nam được biết đến với tên Tú Tài Quốc Tế). Ngoài ra, trường cũng đang muốn phát triển mạnh về thể thao với sân bóng chày, sân bóng rổ, hồ bơi và phòng gym đầy đủ.

Một lời khuyên nhỏ là The Village School không hề có chương trình AP, mà cá nhân mình thấy IB Diploma không được xem trọng ở đại học Mỹ (nhưng rất tốt nếu các bạn muốn đi học ở Canada, Anh, Úc) nên các bạn hãy cân nhắc nhé. Học IB rất cực và nặng nề hơn AP với chương trình 2 năm 11, 12 và có yêu cầu thêm CAS và TOK nên mình đã tự học AP và đăng ký thi vì muốn được tính chỉ trên đại học. Ngoài ra, những bạn đang cân nhắc học Thạc sĩ và Tiến sĩ thì Grad School sẽ không muốn các bạn lấy credit mà bỏ qua những lớp quan trọng trên đại học đâu. Ví dụ như nếu bạn đang cân nhắc học trường Y thì advisor trên Đại học sẽ khuyên là bạn không nên lấy credit IB/AP Biology để bỏ qua các lớp Biology.

Quay trở lại với cuộc sống du học cấp 3, The Village School có rất nhiều hoạt động ngoại khóa hấp dẫn mình với nhiều câu lạc bộ lớn nhỏ, chương trình STEAM hợp tác với MIT thiết kế nhiều thử thách về kỹ thuật sinh học, robot, và khoa học máy tính, liên kết với những công ty và bệnh viện trong Houston để tạo cơ hội cho học sinh thực tập và mùa hè, những buổi biểu diễn kịch và trưng bày hội họa,... phải nói hoạt động ngoại khóa là nhiều vô kể luôn.

Mỗi năm tụi mình sẽ được đi “du lịch” một lần, chuyến đi này được gọi là Class Trip. Gọi là đi du lịch thôi nhưng đừng nghĩ là đi du lịch thật nhé! Chuyến đi này là một hoạt động dã ngoại dài ngày (1 tuần) và bạn phải liên tục vận động hoặc tham gia vào các chương trình từ thiện. Năm lớp 9 mình đã được đi Công viên Quốc gia Big Bend (Big Bend National Park) và 5 ngày của tụi mình chỉ có leo núi leo núi và leo núi! Lần đầu tiên trong đời mà mình leo núi tới trẹo cổ chân trong thời tiết mùa thu lạnh ơi là lạnh nhưng phần thưởng cho mình là thiên nhiên cực kì đẹp trên đường đi với các bãi đá và rừng lá phong mùa thu kèm với cảnh hoàng hôn trên đỉnh núi. (trên đường đi mình cứ phải dừng lại chụp hình vì… đẹp quá).

Kể sơ về cuộc sống trong ký túc xá (dorm). Các bạn sẽ được ở một phòng cho 8 người, trong phòng có 4 phòng ngủ và 2 nhà tắm, nhà vệ sinh. Theo mình thì như vậy khá là đông và phòng ngủ cũng hơi nhỏ nhưng mình vẫn sống ổn. 8 người là số người tối đa một phòng nhưng 4 năm ở đây chưa bao giờ phòng mình đủ 8 người cả. Một tầng lầu sẽ sử dụng chung 1 máy microwave, 3 máy giặt và 3 máy sấy và 2 tủ lạnh. Những học sinh trong chương trình boarding (du học - ở trong ký túc xá) thì chủ yếu là du học sinh Trung Quốc và Việt Nam nhưng những năm gần đây cũng có các bạn học sinh Hàn Quốc, Nhật Bản, Brazil và cả Ukraine nữa. Tất cả các học sinh đều phải học từ 7 giờ tới 9 giờ tối trong ký túc xá và dựa trên điểm của bạn trên trường mà bạn có phải học thêm sau mỗi giờ học trên trường không. Mỗi cuối tuần, ký túc xá sẽ tổ chức các chuyển đi khác nhau như đi tới các trung tâm thương mại, học boxing, bắn cung,... Các dịp lễ Tạ Ơn và nghỉ xuân các bạn trong ký túc xá sẽ được đi du lịch tham quan nước Mỹ. Nhìn chung mình thấy cuộc sống ở ký túc xá cũng khá thú vị và các bạn nên tận dụng những chuyến đi cuối tuần để mua sắm, thư giãn và học những kĩ năng mới (Cá nhân mình đã học được 1 lớp võ tự vệ). Điểm trừ theo mình là tổng số tiền học phí và ký túc xá rất mắc. Đồ ăn trong căn tin cũng không hợp khẩu vị của mình lắm và hơi khó ăn nhưng thời gian gần đây nhà trường cũng đang cố gắng cải thiện nhiều.

Lời khuyên của mình là hãy mạnh dạn làm quen và nói chuyện cũng như hỏi các thầy cô nếu bạn có bất kỳ thắc mắc nào, đừng ngại ngùng gì hết. Năm đầu tiên mình qua đây mình đã bị sốc vì môn World History, đó là lần đầu tiên mình phải viết một bài luận 1000 từ và điểm mình cũng không cao lắm. Sau đó, mình đã email chủ động liên hệ với thầy và sắp xếp học sau giờ học và thầy đã quyết định “drop" điểm bài luận cho mình. Ngoài ra, hãy kết bạn và tham gia vào các hoạt động ngoại khóa càng nhiều càng tốt nha, khoảng thời gian trung học này trôi qua nhanh lắm đó. You only live once!

While Rex Tso is often hailed Hong Kong’s most famous super flyweight boxer, Tyson Ng has also caught the spotlight as an up-and-coming pugilist.

With 11 years in boxing, Ng harvested several Hong Kong Open Tournament championships even during his amateur days. Since turning professional in 2016, he has remained unbeatable after winning nine consecutive tournaments – the best performance ever made by a 150-pound-plus pugilist in Hong Kong history. The 31-year-old also has four championships under his belt, including the World Boxing Council ABCO Continental Middleweight Champion and the 2018 Thai Middleweight Champion, making him the first Hongkonger who has earned both titles.
