A simple yet brilliant idea. Arthur H. Rosenfeld received his PhD in physics under the legendary Enrico Fermi. He then went on to teach at Berkeley and found the lab that would be responsible for some of the biggest inventions in energy efficiency in recent history, including components for CFLs, smart windows, and building energy analysis programs. Then, in the political arena, Rosenfeld worked tirelessly to produce appliance and building energy standards.
His methods, which cut away at the unessential, are estimated to save $1.8 trillion and 7 billion tons of CO2 emissions by 2030, according to a 2001 US National Academy of Sciences report.
