- 父が他界して、4人家族は想像もできないような経済的困窮状態に陥ります。お金を稼がなくてはならず、グレタはデパートで働き始めました。
-1920年にコマーシャルで演技を始めると、映画界への道が大きく開けました。
-1924年に卒業した際、スウェーデンの有名な監督のひとりである、マウリッツ・スティッレルに見いだされます。
- 芸名を使うように彼女に指示したのも、スティッレルです。「グスタフソン」は言いやすい名前とは言えず、難しい発音は新人女優が名前を覚えてもらうためには適さなかったためです。
- そしてすぐに、彼女の人気は海を越えました。1925年、有名なアメリカ映画スタジオ、メトロ・ゴールドウィン・メイヤーが、スティッレルにハリウッドで仕事するようオファーをかけます。
- しかし、当時才能だけでは大スターにはなれないのが女優。ガルボは、減量と英語の習得を強制され、髪を染められ、歯の矯正が施され、眉毛を細く剃られました。
-1926年、ガルボは初のアメリカ映画、『イバニエスの激流』で、スペイン人の歌手を演じます。
