All-female tournament in esports.
There was a request, and I was asked to give my thoughts on this.
- An all-female tournament does not create gender equality. You don't hear organizers doing an all-men division in esports. It so happens that majority of men are into esports. Open division means that any men or women can join in. Equality occurs when both men n women are seen to have no difference in terms of strength. I do think women can compete on the same level as men in esports. Some women are even better than most men when it comes to competitive gaming.
- An all-female tournament encourages more women to partake in esports, which is a great thing. Creating a few all-female tourneys here n there is a start, but the question is what comes after? People need to understand that at the end of the day, a tournament is just a tournament. The only diff is, one has a bigger/smaller prize pool than the other. The moment it stops at being "just another tournament", that's where the whole concept of trying to bring up the women esports scene halts once again.
- Is having an all-female tournament bad then? Nope, of course not. In fact, its great that women are given the opportunity to compete with one another in esports. It is not that easy to just get girls to jump into the competitive scene flooded with men. These tournaments could serve as baby steps for some, or a stepping stone for a few. Later on, seeing these ladies compete in any open division tournaments with other men becomes more and more of a norm than before.
- SouthEast Asia (SEA) has a number of amazing female esports athletes. We have girls eat men for breakfast in CSGO, we have girls who are ranked IMMORTAL in Dota 2, top tier PUBG players, competitive in FIFA n PES, pros in Hearthstone n more.
If men are not careful and keep lookin down on women when it comes to gaming, one day the men will be forced to have an all-men tournament only cuz the girls are taking over.
