This past year has seen some unprecedented changes in the world. Many lives have been lost and many have changed. The world has changed while many of us confront the uncertainty of the future.
For most musicians, life has changed. For months, we have been conducting our lessons online, and concerts have mostly stopped or become an online experience as well. More time has been spent learning how to improve the online teaching experience than one could have imagined. While I have felt the duty to continue teaching, the format the pandemic requires for teaching leaves me unwilling to spend more time than I have to.
And truly, I have had other things to deal with. When the pandemic started to worry the American public in March, I was in the middle of a tour with the String Quartet-in-Residence at Curtis, the Vera Quartet. However, our concerts were canceled, and everything came to a sudden halt.
I felt the universe had sent me an unexpected gift, as I had also just received some terrible news concerning my worsening aortic arches and a diagnosis of kidney cancer. The sudden halt in my professional schedule seemed perfect in its timing. I was able to settle into a monastic existence, to simply practice and attempt to heal.
I see many musicians itching to be concertizing again, and many stepped into new territory, performing on the internet. Many took time to develop new podcasts, and to write new materials for their art. Sadly, many have struggled as they have fallen into desperation without any concert incomes. Altogether the music industry seems to be in peril, and many worry about how music and musicians will survive.
However, I had my own survival to think about. Having been through many difficult experiences in my life, I knew this might be the most difficult I would encounter. My Doctors describe me as a walking time bomb. My condition could be lethal at any moment if my blood pressure gets out of control. So while others wrestle with the fate of the music industry, I’ve needed to face my own fate and mortality.
Playing concerts can mean many things to people. At different times throughout my life, I’ve felt the need to express different aspects of myself. When I was young, I wanted to embody the spirit of romanticism, playing lots of Chopin and Schumann. Then there was a period of time when I wanted to challenge myself by showing off pyrotechnics. I had a brooding period where I turned to the pathos of Rachmaninoff, and then felt the need to return to the purity of Schubert and nobility of Brahms. Throughout this pandemic, I wanted to play Bach. Through Bach’s music I found a kind of spiritual sanctuary.
In considering the program for this concert, I felt again the urge to play music that reflects my current feelings and state of mind. The title of today’s recital, “Years of Pilgrimage” seems to fit exactly what I am experiencing.
Liszt wrote several volumes of “Années de pèlerinage” throughout his life to reflect on thoughts he had during his travels. He links his philosophical thoughts to the scenery which inspired them. “Au Bord d’un Source” describes feelings of rejuvenation while standing next to a clear stream of water, a symbol and source of life and energy. It seems to say, when the stream is so pure, life can be so full of joy.
In the Les jeux d'eaux à la Villa d'Este (The Fountains of the Villa d'Este), the water has a magical and supernatural quality, as Liszt himself wrote in the inscription: "But the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up into eternal life,"( from the Gospel of John.)
For me, I have never felt more connected to Liszt than when he looked upon the valley of Obermann and questioned the meaning of existence. At this moment in my life, I often find myself reflecting my experiences of what I see and read into philosophical musings. Perhaps many people come to a time when this is so.
In all this I have felt gratitude for the love stories and sonnets that one can romantically indulge in, and for storms so violent that they threaten to destroy one’s spirit, even the hell-bound journey which brings up questions about the purpose of life…
On this journey, I felt full and alive as a human being. Looking back on this journey, I am grateful for everything, whether happy or sad, to have made an impact, found and imparted meaning to this life.
The unusual time of this pandemic has marked a milestone for me. I have journeyed back home, and as it happened, this is the first time I have spent so much time in my hometown Kaohsiung in over 35 years. It’s particularly nostalgic to play these pieces as some of them were significant in my early musical career. Vallée d’Obermann was the piece I played in my first competition at the junior high school level, in which I won first prize on the national level, which allowed me to be qualified to apply for a special permission to study abroad. This meant my dream to be educated as a musician could be continued in an environment where I could develop fully. In the following year when I was 13, I won the first Asia-Pacific Youth PIano Competition with the Dante Sonata. The competition catapulted me into national attention as I was headlined in several newspapers, and especially since it was held in Kaohsiung, I became a local hero as well. During the same event, I had a fateful meeting with one of the important influences in my life, Mr. Gary Graffman, who then mentored me throughout not only the years when I was studying at Curtis, but throughout my illness and recovery as a pianist. Right before I departed to study in Philadelphia, I played my first solo recital throughout Taiwan, and along with the Dante Sonata, I also performed the three sonnets.
It’s perfect that now, back in Kaohsiung, all these memories have flooded back into my head. I feel so lucky to have been born here, and to have met my first teacher, Chin-Li Lee, who inspired me on the path to become a musician. Prof. Alexander Sung filled me with dreams of becoming an artist. I am grateful for his belief in my talent, when he chose to give a 12 year old such philosophical pieces to play.
Having once again spent some months in Kaohsiung, I can freshly appreciate the source of inspiration it once was for me. I have returned to the source to heal. Having already glimpsed hell’s gate several times, battered and weathered by the storms of life, I know there is a reason life is this way, and it all will be alright.

Franz Liszt(1811-1886): Sonetto 47 del Petrarca, Sonetto 104 del Petrarca, Sonetto 123 del Petrarca, from Années de pèlerinage, Deuxième année: Italie

我身陷囹圄,監牢又開敞;
愛情不讓我死,也不讓我飛翔;
生命不足惜,死亡也不煩憂;

John Lennon 1940 - 1980
John Lennon 1940 - 1980
A Hard Day’s Night。
A Hard Day's Night
John Lennon
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I work all day
To get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say
You're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan
Because when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeh
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
Aw!
So why on earth should I moan
Because when I get you alone
You know I feel ok
When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight, yeh
It's been a hard day's night
And I've been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night
I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you
I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright
You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright

You are melting into sunset
I am fading into sunrise
If our path never cross again
Then, that is the way it is
You're turning on the lamp
I'm searching for the light
We both have nothing to fear, nothing to lose
We both have nothing at all in the first place
See you, see you again
Those boys' eyes aren't innocent anymore
Those evening bells are ringing out but can't be heard anymore
That is, that is almost like
Everything seems to be over
Far from it, We've got a long way to go, and I'll never forget...
Ah Let's forget everything and go home
Ah Let everything flow away and go home
Though that scar hurts, tho this thirst never be quenched
That doesn't matter anymore, Let's blow them all away
Let's go home with a nice breeze
Let's go home with a gentle rain
What is the use of hating each other
I'm, I'm gonna be the first one to forget
You are worried about the future
I am still attached to the past
This is our last time, I'm supposed to be a God
But still we are too much human
I looked at the world without me
From above, and I found out
It keeps on turning exactly the same as always
That made me feel easy somewhat
See you, see you again
We say farewell at the right before the highway
Leaving all the hustle-bustle behind, I walk alone
Taking, All my life was about taking
And not a bit of giving
Not knowing the meaning of this life I've lived
Ah, Let's give everything and go home
Ah, With empty hands, Let's go home
What we can give is just what we are given
Let's say thank you and be honored
I'm waiting for you, Let's go home
Let's go home where happiness never ends
What can we take with us when we leave this world
Let go of the burdens we're carrying, one by one
What is the use of hating each other
I'm, I'm gonna be the first one to forget
Ah, How am I going to live from today

Loose yourself into this Winter Wonderland of sweets that just look too good to be true, because, well they are! You may not be able to eat them but at least they last forever. Let me show you they're made!
Let's Start!
This super pretty Frozen box filled with even sparklier stuff to help us decorate Frozen themed macarons, cupcakes and a two tier cake. The amazing thing is that you can use these sweets as a jewellery box or container when you're finished. We will set soft, fluffy whipping cream in the spotlight! Let's take a look inside! Aah, too cute to handle! Alright, let's get everything out! Wow, there's a lot more in there than I expected! Well, that's awesome!!
For the star of these winter sweets, the two tier cake there's, a bottom and top cake. Competitive in cuteness are definitely the macarons which we'll turn into two pretty key hangers! The blue Macaron pictures Elsa and the pink one is Anna themed. In a small sachet we've got pearls and crystals, safely packed away. While the pearls and crystals are responsible for the sparkly look, they're quiet limited so I'll take an extra effort to keep them clean and organised by handling them with a a pair of tweezers, gently placing the pearls I use kitchen paper with rough texture to keep small parts from material from rolling around.
This pastry is a small container in disguise and we're lucky enough to have pretty violet twin. Both come with two domes which are super important and you'll soon find out why! But the most important item of all is the whipping cream, which makes for the magical cuteness of these sweets!
(transition with sparkle sound)
Before we start let's pop out the images with which we will decorate the whipping cream. One motif seems to be missing, but luckily there is such a great variety that it allows you to be picky and only choose your most favourite ones.
Here you also see long strips with a scooped silhouette which are specifically for the two tier cake.
All let's see...yep we're all good and ready to start!
♡ ♡ ♡ Let's create a magical sweets winter wonderland ♡ ♡ ♡
I'll remove the lock from the whipping bag and soften the crafting cream by kneading with my hands until i finsih Counting to 100. Utilising some pressure I use a ruler to push mass towards the opening and tightly close the empty part of the bag.
We'll make the cupcakes first, so exchange the regular cap with the large star cap.
The target is to make the most perfect of whipping swirls. If you get the swirls right, the rest is no big deal. Glue a dome in the very centre of each cupcake. This is to support the swirl shape. Keep your hands relaxed and quickly move in circular motions. Oh, the cupcake moved. If you mess up you can wipe it away while the craft creme is still wet.
As you see craft creme looks and behaves like the real thing but dries on air within a few hours. When decorating with pearls there is no need to use pressure as this would immediately get the soft whip out of shape. I gently place the decoration where I want it to be and let it air dry.
(sparkle transition)
From this point on it'll get more difficult as we change to the small star cap! Let's Go ☆
Let's top the the edges of one macaron with whipping cream but leave the top part empty so we can close the macaron at an approximately 20 degree angle. The finished macarons will look like this.
Now on to the biggest part of this set, the amazing two tier ice cake which we'll load with lots of whipping cream to create it's magical castle like appearance. One neatly centred large swirl in the middle of the top cake, surrounded by a sequence of swirls alternating between single and double swirls. Don't worry too much about where to place the pearls as pretty shiny things will look pretty and shiny wherever they are them! *^-^*
I push the cake in a single folded deco strip and voila the top cake is all topped!
The bottom cake needs 6 big double swirls and a small single swirl between each double swirl. While still wet I'll place the top cake on the lid of the bottom cake so that they can dry and stabilise together. I enclose the bottom cake's base using two deco strips and cover the scooped borders with closely spaced droplets of whip. I go for snowflakes because, well, I don't know about you but they kinda remind of sugar . I'll hold the motif gently them onto the cream until they're stuck. As we're finished decorating, we can finally combine all parts together and voila we've built a sweet winter wonderland!

It feels like a perfect night to dress up like hipsters
And make fun of our exes, uh uh, uh uh.
It feels like a perfect night for breakfast at midnight
To fall in love with strangers, uh uh, uh uh.
Yeah,
We're happy, free, confused, and lonely at the same time
It's miserable and magical.
Oh, yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the deadlines
It's time
Uh oh!
I don't know about you
But I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright
If you keep me next to you
You don't know about me
But I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright
If we just keep dancing like we're
22~
22~
It seems like one of those nights,
This place is too crowded.
Too many cool kids, uh uh, uh uh
It seems like one of those nights,
We ditch the whole scene and end up dreaming
Instead of sleeping.
Yeah,
We're happy, free, confused, and lonely in the best way
It's miserable and magical.
Oh, yeah
Tonight's the night when we forget about the heartbreaks
It's time
Uh oh!
I don't know about you
But I'm feeling 22
Everything will be alright
If you keep me next to you
You don't know about me
But I'll bet you want to
Everything will be alright
If we just keep dancing like we're
22~
22~
don't know about me
It feels like one of those nights,
We ditch the whole scene.
It feels like one of those nights,
We won't be sleeping.
It feels like one of those nights,
You look like bad news.
I gotta have you,
I gotta have you.
