【Computer Vision in 2018】

Computer vision was a hot topic this year for AI. For our AI Open House earlier this year, we invited two computer vision experts to share their best practices and limitations when it comes to this technology.

This year, a number of new developments have spurred the advancement of computer vision in our everyday lives from both startups and corporates alike. For example, Amazon rolled out Rekognition so that any developer can use computer vision. Microsoft released OneDrive and SharePoint for AI capabilities, and Google Photos allows us to search for our memories. On the startups side, SenseTime continues to make waves developing face recognition technology. Our very own Umbo CV develops hardware and software for enterprise intelligent security cameras.

Now that it's possible for small companies and individual developers to create function computer vision capabilities for a mass audience, the technology will no doubt be in every aspect of our lives. We can expect smart cities to crop up in 2019, with government being involved in and implementing these new technologies.

The market for computer vision is growing almost as quickly as the capabilities: It’s projected to reach $26.2 billion by 2025, growing more than 30 percent per year. AI will continue to eat the future -- keep an "eye" out for the latest developments in computer vision!

//Let’s say you would like to search for all your pictures of a specific person; the app can find all photos of that person with the use of artificial intelligence, particularly its face-recognition system.

Users can also search photos according to location, time or event. For example, you can search “last year+Macau”, and Google Photos will group all photos taken in Macau last year. Or you can search “birthday”, and the program will get all photos with birthday items, such as birthday cakes, candles and greetings.

The tag can also be objects such as coins. Users can also integrate different tags to make the search more precise.// Erwin Huang
