【Haven Assistance’s statement on the German government’s decision to grant a Hong Kong protester asylum status】
On October 14, 2020, a 22-year-old student of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), who fled Hong Kong last November, was granted refugee status for three years by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF). This is the first instance of a protestor receiving asylum in Germany following activities in the anti-extradition law movement.
Haven Assistance would like to express our gratitude to the German Government for this decision. This is not the first time that the German Government has granted asylum to Hong Kong citizens. In May 2018, the German government granted asylum to two Hong Kong activists -- Ray Wong Toi-Yeung, the founder of Hong Kong Indigenous (HKI) and co-founder of Haven Assistance, and Alan Li Tung-Sing, a former member of HKI. Germany was the first European country to grant asylum to Hong Kong citizens.
However, while Haven Assistance welcomes the German Government’s decision to grant asylum to the Hong Kong protester, we also urge Germany and other European countries to continue to improve their asylum processes and consider enacting a comprehensive lifeboat policy for Hong Kongers.
The student protester told Haven Assistance that she had faced many hardships during her application process, such as living in refugee camps for nearly 11 months, being hospitalised due to emotional issues, and being sexually assaulted by a refugee camp staff. “I am grateful to the German government for granting me asylum. The German government has provided me with basic necessities, such as food, clothing, shelter, transportation and basic medical services,” she said when sharing her life in refugee camps. “However, if the German government could consider simplifying the asylum application process for Hong Kong protesters, such as allowing them to choose freely their place of residence while waiting for the decision,” she also suggested, “it would be of great convenience and support to them.”
Sam Goodman, Senior Policy Advisor at Hong Kong Watch, said:
“We welcome the German Government’s decision to grant asylum to the female protester. It demonstrates the German Government’s commitment to stand up for human rights and its recognition that under the National Security Law many Hong Kongers face political persecution, arbitrary arrest and detention if they stay in the city.”
Goodman continued: “However, the young woman’s experiences in the refugee camp shows that it is time for reform. In July, Germany along with the other EU Member States agreed to bring in proposals to make it easier for young Hong Kongers to work and study in Europe as part of an international lifeboat policy. Nearly three months later, we believe it is time for the German Government to act on its promise.”
He also suggested that the German government could “reform its asylum policy by designating a specific pathway for Hong Kongers at risk of political persecution, expanding its Working Holiday Visa, and considering the case for an EU-wide lifeboat policy through expanding the Erasmus scheme for Hong Kongers.” Germany should, he concluded, “join like-minded international partners in ensuring that Hongkongers has a viable insurance policy in the face of a further crackdown on their rights.”

GREATEST RESPONSE FROM MANTRA RECITATION

Today is the 15th day of the 7th Lunar month, and also marks my 15th day of this year's recitation of the Mantra to Repay Debt of Gratitude to Parents.
To clear everybody's doubts on this mantra, I did 2 Youtube Lives and answered a total of 44 questions.
Including my replies to the comment section, I should have answered about 49 questions. How perfect~
This must be my karmic retribution. When I was young, I was that kid with a million questions and my favourite book was the encyclopaedia 😅😂🤣
The adults would ask why a little girl would have so many questions. Thankfully, this "gender discrimination" did not kill off my thirst for knowledge. 🧐😁😉
These few days, I have been receiving comments from some viewers who have been reciting this mantra. Some begin to have better family relations, some have unexpected results (💰), while some dream of their deceased parents.
A few years ago, I received a similar PM. After reciting the mantra, a young male undergrad client dreamt of his father who passed away due to sickness. His dream was long and very vivid, and he could clearly see his father living as usual in the dream. When he woke up from his dream, he was very emotional and wrote a PM to thank me.
For any dream of your deceased parents, as long as they are not showing signs of suffering in the dream, generally it should be a positive dream and also shows that your deceased parents have received the merits of your recitation.
(Well, how much merits your recitation generate is another story for another day~)
Some readers may feel that such dreams may be a result of overthinking in the daytime. However, it's not like everyone can dream of their deceased parents even if they want to. If such dreams can encourage the children to continue their mantra recitation, isn't it a good thing?
I have recited this mantra for 15 years and have never had such responses like my audience. Ever since I decided to do this "thankless" job 😁, I have been greatly favoured by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. ❤️
When I was penniless, my parents would always have sufficient money to see the doctor when they fall sick.
When I was too busy to visit them, or accompany them to the doctor, they are able to go themselves or accompanied by someone.
At this point in time, they are relatively healthy. Amitabha. 🙏
When I was a kid, I was most afraid of my parents dying and I would be left an orphan. As I grew up, I understood impermanence. Apart from praying for their good health, I wish for them to leave this world with no pain and illness when their time is up, and be delivered by Buddha.
In front of the altar, I once made an aspiration for all my merits to be dedicated to my parents. But please don't think I am filial. I was once very unfilial and this is my insignificant effort at making up. 😬
Every family has its own problems. Even an upright official will find it hard to judge family matters.
Not every child can enjoy good family relations with his/her parents. There are many karmic entanglements involved in this equation, and the disharmony isn't easily resolved just because one party decides to be nicer to the other party.
I am happy for you when you benefit from reciting this Mantra to Repay Debt of Gratitude to Parents.
Seeking miraculous response shouldn't be the goal of mantra recitation.
I am very happy that you are receiving the benefits of reciting this Mantra to Repay Debt of Gratitude to Parents! One should not wish for supernatural phenomena by reciting the Buddha's name/mantra/sutra. The most important aim is to modulate your own heart. If the Mara in your heart is not subdued, you are bound to fail in your quest for Dharma.
Once this month of reciting the Mantra to Repay Debt of Gratitude to Parents is over, should you still remember the toils of your parents and strive to not let them down by contributing more as well as adhering to the precepts, I will think this is your greatest harvest indeed.

What a great man. Calm, assured, always studying. Just like me.
Before sharing my thoughts on the passing of the great Chadwick Boseman, I first offer my condolences to his family who meant so very much to him. To his wife, Simone, especially.
I inherited Marvel and the Russo Brothers' casting choice of T'Challa. It is something that I will forever be grateful for. The first time I saw Chad's performance as T'Challa, it was in an unfinished cut of Captain America: Civil War. I was deciding whether or not directing Black Panther was the right choice for me. I'll never forget, sitting in an editorial suite on the Disney Lot and watching his scenes. His first with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, then, with the South African cinema titan, John Kani as T'Challa's father, King T'Chaka. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to make this movie. After Scarlett's character leaves them, Chad and John began conversing in a language I had never heard before. It sounded familiar, full of the same clicks and smacks that young black children would make in the States. The same clicks that we would often be chided for being disrespectful or improper. But, it had a musicality to it that felt ancient, powerful, and African.
In my meeting after watching the film, I asked Nate Moore, one of the producers of the film, about the language. "Did you guys make it up?" Nate replied, "That's Xhosa, John Kani's native language. He and Chad decided to do the scene like that on set, and we rolled with it." I thought to myself, "He just learned lines in another language, that day?" I couldn't conceive how difficult that must have been, and even though I hadn't met Chad, I was already in awe of his capacity as actor.
I learned later that there was much conversation over how T'Challa would sound in the film. The decision to have Xhosa be the official language of Wakanda was solidified by Chad, a native of South Carolina, because he was able to learn his lines in Xhosa, there on the spot. He also advocated for his character to speak with an African accent, so that he could present T'Challa to audiences as an African king, whose dialect had not been conquered by the West.
I finally met Chad in person in early 2016, once I signed onto the film. He snuck past journalists that were congregated for a press junket I was doing for "Creed," and met with me in the green room. We talked about our lives, my time playing football in college, and his time at Howard studying to be a director, about our collective vision for T'Challa and Wakanda. We spoke about the irony of how his former Howard classmate Ta-Nehisi Coates was writing T'Challa's current arc with Marvel Comics. And how Chad knew Howard student Prince Jones, who's murder by a police officer inspired Coates' memoir Between The World and Me.
I noticed then that Chad was an anomaly. He was calm. Assured. Constantly studying. But also kind, comforting, had the warmest laugh in the world, and eyes that seen much beyond his years, but could still sparkle like a child seeing something for the first time.
That was the first of many conversations. He was a special person. We would often speak about heritage and what it means to be African. When preparing for the film, he would ponder every decision, every choice, not just for how it would reflect on himself, but how those choices could reverberate. "They not ready for this, what we are doing…" "This is Star Wars, this is Lord of the Rings, but for us… and bigger!" He would say this to me while we were struggling to finish a dramatic scene, stretching into double overtime. Or while he was covered in body paint, doing his own stunts. Or crashing into frigid water, and foam landing pads. I would nod and smile, but I didn't believe him. I had no idea if the film would work. I wasn't sure I knew what I was doing. But I look back and realize that Chad knew something we all didn't. He was playing the long game. All while putting in the work. And work he did.
He would come to auditions for supporting roles, which is not common for lead actors in big budget movies. He was there for several M'Baku auditions. In Winston Duke's, he turned a chemistry read into a wrestling match. Winston broke his bracelet. In Letitia Wright's audition for Shuri, she pierced his royal poise with her signature humour, and would bring about a smile to T'Challa's face that was 100% Chad.
While filming the movie, we would meet at the office or at my rental home in Atlanta, to discuss lines and different ways to add depth to each scene. We talked costumes, military practices. He said to me "Wakandans have to dance during the coronations. If they just stand there with spears, what separates them from Romans?" In early drafts of the script. Eric Killmonger's character would ask T'Challa to be buried in Wakanda. Chad challenged that and asked, "What if Killmonger asked to be buried somewhere else?"
Chad deeply valued his privacy, and I wasn't privy to the details of his illness. After his family released their statement, I realised that he was living with his illness the entire time I knew him. Because he was a caretaker, a leader, and a man of faith, dignity and pride, he shielded his collaborators from his suffering. He lived a beautiful life. And he made great art. Day after day, year after year. That was who he was. He was an epic firework display. I will tell stories about being there for some of the brilliant sparks 'till the end of my days. What an incredible mark he's left for us.
I haven't grieved a loss this acute before. I spent the last year preparing, imagining and writing words for him to say, that we weren't destined to see. It leaves me broken knowing that I won't be able to watch another close-up of him in the monitor again or walk up to him and ask for another take.
It hurts more to know that we can't have another conversation, or Facetime, or text message exchange. He would send vegetarian recipes and eating regimens for my family and me to follow during the pandemic. He would check in on me and my loved ones, even as he dealt with the scourge of cancer.
In African cultures, we often refer to loved ones that have passed on as ancestors. Sometimes you are genetically related. Sometimes you are not. I had the privilege of directing scenes of Chad's character, T'Challa, communicating with the ancestors of Wakanda. We were in Atlanta, in an abandoned warehouse, with bluescreens, and massive movie lights, but Chad's performance made it feel real. I think it was because from the time that I met him, the ancestors spoke through him.
It's no secret to me now how he was able to skilfully portray some of our most notable ones. I had no doubt that he would live on and continue to bless us with more. But it is with a heavy heart and a sense of deep gratitude to have ever been in his presence, that I have to reckon with the fact that Chad is an ancestor now. And I know that he will watch over us, until we meet again.
