💌 Dear Adam,After more than 2 years, I finally gathered enough strength to go back to our favourite place. I thought I was ready until we arrived there and I couldn’t even open the door to step my foot down from the car. As I peeped around from the car window, our whole memory together rolled back and hit me like a wave of tsunami. I quickly looked at Mr Dad’s face and thank God he understood my signal right away. He took the kids down and left me alone in the car.There I was, at our favourite place, stuck in the car, my legs felt like jelly, my hands were icy cold in the late summer heat, my heart was pumping hard, my whole body was trembling like a volcanic mountain ready to vomit its lava…couldn’t make a move, couldn’t say a word! And not long after the kids disappeared from my sight…my tears ran down like a heavy rain. I cried and cried and cried.After almost 2 hours, the kids walked back to the car with wide smiles on each of their faces. I was stunned looking at them. I spotted a sign of strength in them. Yes, they are stronger than me. They were so happy. They missed the place so much. They talked about our memories together. They took a walk down the memory lane walking back the trail that we last took together when you were here. And they already planned to come back again soon to create more memories at our favourite place.And I’m glad. Relief. I found my strength back in them. I know this time I failed to get myself out there. But at least I’ve made the first move. InshaAllah next time I believe that I will be stronger to step down and be ready to create more memories with the kids at our favourite place. 💛 WHEN VULNERABILITY BECOMES MY AUTHENTICITYLong ago, the speaker curator Shaen and I agreed that my talk would be about about defining ones purpose and how that can help people lead themselves and others through difficult times. It isnt hard to outline the talk. I know the teaching points, the modality, and the tools like the back of my hands. I will also tell my story. There are many stories on my path of tracking purpose. But I know I have to choose the one that cuts the deepest. The most vulnerable story. Because vulnerability is how you let yourself be truly seen. And the audience wants to see you, the real you, not a pretty shell. But still, sitting here at Starbucks with a venti cup of black tea latte, Ive hit a wall. I have the teaching points, the tools, the story. But something is missing. Something important. Something that will add a touch of magic to the talk.I stare at the blank page. I gaze out the window. I open my kindle library and look at the books. Suddenly, my eyes land at the poetry collection of Mary Oliver. Something sparks. A quiet excitement rises up my body: I want to read poems. A few days later, I spoke to Shaen again. She loves the idea: We havent had anyone doing poetry yet! It sounds beautiful. Just be you. So I open my talk with Mary Olivers The Summer Day and end with Lucille Cliftons Blessing the Boat. Several participants say that it brings them to tears. They even share their texts with me right after my talk: That was soooo beautiful!
