A really great way to encourage little ones to pick up reading is just to make it available!
We have little reading chests in each room, nothing fancy just literally a wooden box from ikea filled with all kinds of books for her to explore.
We also make time in our day to sit down with her and read if she’d like to.
No “lesson”, no “trying to teach”, just enjoying the book together, genuinely curious and engaged, allowing her to take the lead, ask questions, make observations, and time to soak in all the rich illustrations and words.
Children develop a love of learning by falling in love with the process, trusting them to “get it” when they are ready because they are able, whole, and so very competent.
There’s a really great workshop on developing a critical eye to curate an intentional collection of quality picture books that I love by Anyaman Preschool. It’s led by their head principal Joanna Menon who has a Master of Education in Learning and Teaching from Harvard University and is a dear friend.

I’ve done it twice and still fall in love with the process and heart of children-centered education. Her little smile as she “reads” to herself is the very best.
I highly encourage you to join the workshop. It will challenge you to think of early literacy so differently and raise little confident passionate readers.
