Dear Student,
I want you to know, I feel you. Maybe you've not done so well in your exams and you're feeling down and bleak about your future. You're unsure if you'll be able to make it anywhere because of the numbers/alphabets on your school examinations result slips. I am here to tell you, don't be afraid or discouraged. I was a student and never was I gifted academically. In fact my grades were average at best and I often failed at important subjects like Maths, Science and Mother Tongue. Heck, even in Polytechnic I didn't do well in my modules. I had this impression when I was studying that damn, I'm going to be an average nobody throughout my life because of my school results but as I grew and matured, life taught me that this was NOT the case.
Understand that your life is not determined by your exam results. In fact those numbers and alphabets on your result slips tell you nothing of the trajectory of your life, of what U can achieve and become in future. Everyone is talented & gifted in different ways. You can't put a horse and fish in a foot race and expect the fish to win. The fish was made to swim and if the fish is judged purely by how it runs, then of course it won't do well.
Don't get me wrong tho, I'm not saying f*ck school and just do your thing but what I'm saying is, don't be discouraged or feel like you have lost all hope in life just because you didn't do well in school cos that ain't the only way to success and a good life. Doing well academically does not automatically mean U would do well in the workforce. Its two totally different things. Your life is not determined by a piece of paper but by your attitude, your determination, your work ethic & your desire to succeed.
If I had believed and based my self-esteem and future on my exam results, I would never be where I am today. I was from a below average neighbourhood school, raised in a humble hawker family and grew up in the streets and HDB void decks. Despite what society and my environment made me feel about my potential & my future, I always believed in myself. I put in the work, the time, the heart and the sacrifice to achieve what I wanted to achieve and despite the several setbacks and bad times I faced along the way, I never gave up and here I am today making a comfortable living doing what I love. If I can do it, you can absolutely do it. Believe in YOURSELF because the BEST is yet to BE!
