Trash, the Library and a Worn, Brown Table: The
2019 College Essays on Money
We organize the money in our wallets in units of currency, dollars and cents, bills and coins.
But the money in our heads is a lot harder to arrange, lost as it often is in a haze of volatile emotions, pride and shame, jubilation and despair.
Reckoning with these feelings is hard, which is why people don’t talk about them much. Writing about them is even harder.
Six years ago, I started asking high school seniors to send in any college application essay that happened to be about money, work, social class or related topics. Immediately, it was clear that there was plenty we could learn from their writing, as they and their parents prepared to make what may be the biggest financial decision of their lives: where to spend up to $300,000 on a college education.
This year’s collection of five essays is a reminder of how rich the idea of money is for the writers who dare to tackle it.
A plumber’s daughter and a young man fascinated with garbage trucks take on jobs that few of their peers would want. A dish washer rides home in the middle of the school night, flashcards in hand. A family gets smaller set against the tableau of its aging furniture. And a Minnesota teenager finds her way, over many years, to a new role in an old place of refuge.
‘I got the usual looks from people fresh out of bars or parties, either because of the stench of a hard night’s work on my clothes or because I was muttering to myself while feverishly flipping flashcards.’
—Mark Isai Garcia 「剛出酒吧或參加完派對的人朝我投以習以為常的目光,要不是因為辛苦工 作一整晚後,我的衣服上散發著惡臭,不然就是我一邊瘋狂翻動學習卡片,一邊 低聲自言自語。」 (Mark Isai Garcia)
“No more broken plates, you understand?” 「
I could make little sense of the broken English that spat from his mouth but his scrunched-up face spoke a universal language. It was a Friday night in Little Tokyo, and while families were eating five-star meals in the front dining room, a 14-year-old boy was in the back washing their dishes.
Wash the plates by hand, dump them into the sanitizer, place the plates into the machine, dry the plates off, return the plates to their designated spot and repeat — hopefully without damaging any. On this night though, a porcelain plate slipped through my soapy fingers and shattered onto the floor in five pieces. My face flushed even as I tried to keep my composure, but inside I was screaming, “Why me!?” as if my scream would make the plate whole again.
The shattered plate was only one of the many worries fighting relentlessly inside my head for attention — there was the Advanced Placement United States history midterm, a low grade in calculus, the eviction notice, a little brother getting into trouble and a dozen other smaller but pressing concerns.
For me, there was no calling in sick to clear my head, getting some much needed rest or carving out study time before an upcoming exam. I had to contribute to the necessities. I shut up, got back to work and pushed with all the energy I had left. I knew all too well the symptoms of bottling up my emotions — the bitter taste of salt in each drop of sweat, losing myself in the background music and the muscle aches were nothing new to me.
It was 12 a.m. when my shift finally ended. I boarded the bus home and took out my notes to study. I got the usual looks from people fresh out of bars or parties, either because of the stench of a hard night’s work on my clothes or because I was muttering to myself while feverishly flipping flashcards on a bus in the middle of the night.
Their stares didn’t bother me at all. I was used to those too, and they were nothing more than another set of speed bumps in the way of achieving my goals. I was tired of seeing childhood friends flashing gang signs, relatives glued to the beer bottle or my dad coming home late at night with burn scars from work. Something had to change and I knew it fell to me to initiate that change.
Fortunately, I also knew I had dedication, desire and grit in my blood. My grandfather was part of the first wave of Mexican immigrants that settled in Los Angeles. He returned home to a small village in rural Oaxaca, with his savings and tales of the land of opportunity.
Both of my parents left Oaxaca in their early teenage years and began working long hours in Los Angeles, as a cook and a maid. The work ethic was passed down generations; from the cornfields in Oaxaca, to the restaurants in Los Angeles, to the classroom, which helped me thrive both in school and work.
On this particular night, as I walked through the front door at home, I saw an uplifting surprise: My mother had fallen asleep waiting up for me despite her own long day. I tucked the cash tips I made that night into her purse and turned off the TV.
I peered into our bedroom where my brothers and cousins were lost in their blissful dreams. Watching my siblings snore and breathe slowly sparked a yawn that cued the rest of my body’s delayed exhaustion. However, it would be a while before I could join them in sleep. I had an essay due early the next morning, and Ms. DePaolo doesn’t accept late work.

Is it possible to travel Europe without a lot of money? ABSOLUTELY! Here's how I'm able to afford to travel to make YouTube videos
Traveling isn't always cheap, but it isn't also crazy expensive. You don't need to be crazy rich to travel a lot. If you have a small budget, then it's possible to travel further if you can stretch your money further.
1. Be flexible with flight dates. Flights can increase by a lot sometimes on the very next day. Using sites like Google Flights to see the best deals. Double checking with airlines. Fly with budget airlines. Accept that cheap flights might have long lay overs.
2. Try not to check in bags. Budget airlines charge ridiculous amounts for checked bags. So therefore, you must wear the same clothes over and over again like me.
3. Wash your own clothes and use heaters and or AC vents to dry them.
4. Travel with others to split the costs.
5. Eat basic food most of the time so you can save money for dishes/meals for video purposes. In Europe, pizzas, kebabs, vending machines are cheap and delicious.
6. Use public transport as often as you can (some European cities are better connected than others) and only use taxis when you absolutely have to or use Uber instead.
7. Sleep at airports to save money. (Plan showers ahead of time / it's okay to be a little bit dirty) Some airports might even have showers that you can use. http://www.sleepinginairports.net/
8. Don't be too stingy when it comes to the budget though because then you won't really get to enjoy yourself. Reward yourself with a good meal or a drink from time to time.
9. I also use my savings, YouTube earnings, and Patreon to reinvest back into my channel in order to keep traveling to make content.
10. 10. Allocate money for other things with higher priority depending on the situation: For instance, on some nights, a hotel with a table and desk is required for video editing. On other nights, a simple windowless room is all that's required.
And on some nights, I'm on someone's couch.
Here's a video of doing some of the things I mentioned above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5qNdZTkV0I

I have a love-hate relationship with my body. Especially my tummy and hips area.
I can no longer squeeze into my pre-pregnancy jeans. No matter how much I diet and exercise, I have this horrible saggy pouch of wrinkly skin staring at me when I gaze down. It's worst when I'm seated. I always cover that bit when I'm sitting on the throne every morning. It didn't use to be there 9 years ago.
And then I have that scar. After three attempts trying to clear up the keloids, operation after operation and putting all sorts of creams on it, I've decided to just let that crooked scar be. Where the cut was at, will always leave a sunken line if I wear anything tight.
(So you have your panty waist line, and then you have the C-sect line/fold just slightly below....that's why I like wearing looser clothes)
I'm trying to do more squats to build back the londehness of my arse. Gravity is going crazy on me. My boobs? Engorged? They look pornstar attractive. Visually they might look nice, but the pain is unbearable! And then whilst admiring my mammary glands, I think of my son, immediately I start leaking.
Yes. Definitely not a turn on. At all.
After suckling, one side will always be bigger than the other. After breastfeeding three, it takes a toll on the breast tissues too.
Kesian depa.
My hair is falling. Hence my new fringe. My son is drooling. They say the more he drools, the more hair loss I face. It's very depressing seeing how my hair clogs the drain each time I wash my hair.
And just when I get depressed, especially after seeing some celebs bounce back so easily, donning the most fashionable getup looking oh so priceless, I am reminded that I am just human. A working mother of three with no helper, driver nor a team of stylist on my beck and call.
Exercise is housework and maybe 30minutes of yoga - itupun more for therapy than exercise per se.
Eating? I try my best to eat healthily, but with three kids and a husband who all have different dietary requirements, my needs are met last and I often eat the extras of the meals I prepare for them. Or none.
So yes. I have a love hate relationship with my body post pregnancy. But after reading this article below, I am reminded not to beat myself up too much.
Chill Pon.

When you forget to bring cookies out,
your child would cry for hug instead of taking a baby stroller,
When you forget to bring a set of clothes out,
then your child would leaks urine on you.
When you forget to take your bib along, your child would make
the clothes dirty while eating.
Dirty!
Now you need not worry about getting your clothes dirty because of the latest technology

Now let's open them and have a look.
There's a zipper bag
That is loaded with
Light green and yellow capsules inside.

In dark blue and yellow color.

Based on Chanel perfume.
The classic British Freesia fragrance is blended
Based on Jo Malone perfume.
Therefore, these laundry capsules smell very fragrant.
Their fragrance can permeate the whole clothes drying room.
Even until Qistin walked into the kitchen.
Like Taiwan, a year has four seasons. Your body may stinky in summer,
And your clothes may smell wet and stuffy in winter.
As long as you use these laundry capsules,
You can get rid of all these uncomfortable smells.
They are really smell good,
Like a perfume. The fragrance is very special.
It is divided into three stages.
The smell is different in the early, middle and last stages.
After using these laundry capsules, you can achieve the effect of color protection
Without any more softener.
Because they use the color protection factor – PVP,
Which can protect the color of clothes
And prevent clothes from fading easily.
You must take these healing laundry capsules,
With your dry fingers.
Put one in the washing machine,
And then you can do washing.
If the clothes are dirty, just put two more.
When we used to pour laundry detergent
Or dig laundry detergent,
We often got our hands sticky.
OK. Now let's wash children's dirty clothes.
Have you eaten up tomatoes?
Yes!
Need some more
Where are the stains?
Here...
How did this happen?
Stained by tomatoes.
Turn on CC subtitles,
If you have any questions about the practice,
Welcome to leave a message below!
