God placed every sin throughout time upon Jesus at the cross, such that He became the carrier of sin in its entirety. Then, the fire of God’s judgment fell upon Jesus for our sins. He was burnt until the sin debt was paid in full.
God punished sin in Jesus’ body so that He can righteously spare us from the punishment.
Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we who place our faith in Jesus as Lord have been made right with God.
When we believed, we did not just receive the righteousness of an animal or of an angel. We received Jesus’ own righteousness as a gift, and that is why we have become the righteousness of God (as righteous as God Himself).
