Kaiseki is the ultimate Japanese fine dining experience where a wide range of techniques and skills are displayed. I’ve wanted to try it for so long and finally did on this trip.
Following one of your recommendations (arigatou!!), I made a last-minute reservation for a last-order lunch course at 2:30pm at Kitazuien restaurant and luckily got through.
Got there right on time and was immediately shown to our table. It is a beautiful restaurant located on the whole floor of the building with a small garden in front.

How to get there: it’s on the 3rd floor of a building a few steps from Nishi Umeda Station exit 9. You should remember the restaurant name’s kanji characters as its signage in front of the building does not have a latin translation.

正在讀翻譯理論課的課本,其中有一段說到:
Be satisfied with common usage and do not foolishly introduce novelties spawned by curiosity which can only be called reprehensible... But do not think I am telling you the translator should completely abstain from using words outside common usage, since it is well known that Greek or Latin are richer in diction than French. 關於新詞的翻譯到底該怎麼處理,這個問題已經困擾我好久了。各位如果有什麼想法,可以提出來,我很想知道別人的看法。
上面這段文字簡單來說,就是建議譯者「避免自創新詞,有現成的常用詞就用現成的。」
現代社會交流頻繁,各種不同的領域的專有名詞一直不斷出現,但有時候我會覺得,譯者常常不多花時間想個中文常見的說法,導致譯文拗口難解怪異,例如日文的「小確幸」其實一開始真的讓我很不習慣。不過,新詞的特性就是,一開始新,久了也就舊了。大家聽習慣也就明白了。畢竟,「幽默」、「披薩」等外來語當初也是直接音譯過來,現在也沒有人會說這些字不是中文什麼的。
賴慈芸在〈學院的翻譯與禁忌〉一文也有提到:「將外國學術著作翻譯成母語的最終目的,應是增加母語語彙,建立本地學術社群可以對話、進行研究的語言。」並且引用了美國學術協會理事會的說法,認為「翻譯豐富了目標語」。
然而,話說回來,Etienne Dolet的說法(就是最上面的那段話)好像也沒有錯。因為如果一直使用自創的新詞,特別是在學術領域,會讓這個領域的知識更難讓一般人接近認識(很多學術論文或專書都像有字天書)。我認為學術界不應該這麼封閉,讓外人不得其門而入。這對知識的傳遞會形成阻礙不是嗎?
可是,有時候如果不自創新詞或採用音譯的方式,很多詞彙真的翻不出來,要不就是得用補充說明的方式,導致譯成的詞彙或句子太長。之前在翻《手感烘焙聖經》的時候,翻到很多西方糕點的專有名詞就很困擾,到底是要直接音譯就好、自創一個新詞、還是使用補充說明的方式解釋詞彙?

看到 [1] 引述兩段譯文,內容談到一個人的 primary tongue 和 mother tongue,頗有意思,便下意識「腦饞手癢」找出《此刻》原文來瞧瞧,結果真令人大失所望,卻也司空見慣。短短兩段話的翻譯(相信未經引述者刻意刪減或改動,故能準確反映紙書原譯),就有好幾處文意遺漏或譯不到位,嚴重的「欠額翻譯」(under-translation),最後還來一個大錯,顛倒文意的輕重次序。(提示藏在此文標題中。這類錯誤,不諳英語者並不罕見。)這些遺漏和錯誤暫時不一一指出,留給有興趣的讀者從以下的英中對照自行探一探究竟,歡迎留言。

This phenomenon is more widespread than one might think. Adeste Fideles
“O Come, All Ye Faithful” (originally written in Latin as Adeste Fideles) is a Christmas carol which has been attributed to various authors, including John Francis Wade (1711–1786), with the earliest copies of the hymn all bearing his signature, John Reading (1645–1692) and King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656).
The original four verses of the hymn were extended to a total of eight, and these have been translated into many languages. The English translation of “O Come, All Ye Faithful” by the English Catholic priest Frederick Oakeley, written in 1841, is widespread in most English speaking countries. The present harmonization is from the English Hymnal (1906).
O Tannenbaum:
It is a German Christmas song. Based on a traditional folk song, it became associated with the Christmas tree by the early 20th century and sung as a Christmas carol.
Jingle Bells:
One of the best-known and commonly sung American Christmas songs in the world. It was written by James Lord Pierpont (1822–1893) and published under the title “One Horse Open Sleigh” in the autumn of 1857.
White Christmas
It is an Irving Berlin song reminiscing about an old-fashioned Christmas setting. According to the Guinness World Records, the version sung by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single of all time, with estimated sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide.

“Silent Night” (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is a popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. It was declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO in March 2011.
Sleigh Ride:
It is a popular light orchestral piece composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946; he finished the work in February 1948. Though it was originally an instrumental piece, lyrics, about a person who would like to ride in a sleigh on a winter’s day with another person, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950.
