(Amie Parry)

💕Why I chose Taiwan #16 – Amie Parry
“I grew up in a small city in inland California called San Bernardino. I went to college and graduate school in San Diego. I got my PhD in literature. We were all expected to learn at least one language, so I did Chinese. I traveled to Taiwan with a friend right after I graduated from college in 1987. We came here to teach English and study Chinese for six months, then I traveled around Asia by myself with a backpack.
I originally wanted to study classical Chinese poetry. I got a Fulbright grant and I came back here. I started going to the poetry nights that were happening at that time. I met some of the modernist poets, and I switched my focus to the modernist poetry of the 60s, 70s, and 80s in Taiwan. I wrote my dissertation on modernism as a way of understanding the parts of modernity that are hard to know in the existing political language that we inherit. I think that experience in historical formation is always more complicated than the language.
These poems are not explicitly political; they're very experimental and strange. At the time, the modernist poets I met were mostly 外省, men who had been drafted and come over with the KMT, so they had experienced war and displacement, and a very intense and traumatic historical moment. People experienced it differently, and at that time, it was a hard thing to talk about. Later, I wrote a book about poetry, but I just focused on one or two poets I find really, really fascinating. And I was asking some of the same kinds of questions: how can these poems help you think about certain topics that are hard to think about?
At that time, Modernist poetry was a kind of an institution already. There was a journal called 現代詩, “Modern Poetry,” a really important journal that most of these poets were published in. Some of them combined poetry and theater. There's just so much going on in Taiwan in terms of poetry and performance and literature. It's just amazing. And I'm very interested in it at all, but I haven't kept up. After I finished my dissertation, I got a job offer at 交大. I thought, wow, there's something really amazing happening intellectually here. When my first book came out, it actually got an award in the U.S., and I was so surprised. I didn't even know it had been nominated. I asked them, ‘Why did you choose my book?’ And they said, because one of the chapters has a transnational of framework for the whole argument, so it wasn't like you used Western theories and Eastern texts, it's like the whole knowledge part is coming out of both places.
I currently teach in the English department at National Central University. I'm the chair and I teach writing classes, literature classes, and literary and cultural theory classes. Since my first visit to Taiwan in 1987, I think people are a little more comfortable talking to people from different places. In my personal interactions, I feel a difference, like a greater openness. Back then, there were so many interesting things happening here, all at one time, and that's the time that I happened to be here. And I made good friends in my personal life and in my intellectual life. And I think those are the things that made me come back: like if you feel that there's something interesting happening and there's some way that you can support it. I guess that's a way of feeling at home.” — Amie Parry

Dedicated to my secondborn. This sweet, doe-eyed girl is my rainbow baby who came at a turbulent period in my life after experiencing a loss in Sweden.
I remember it was one of the most nerve-racking moments when I went for her first ultrasound, hoping with every ounce of my being that I could see a flickering dot and hear her heartbeat. Thankfully, I did and it was truly one of the best feelings holding her in my arms the moment she was born. Three years later, she became a big sister and it warmed my heart seeing her gentle ways and loving heart.
This is the child who dispelt my worries and proved that middle child theories do not always hold true. She is boisterous, vivacious, animated, filled with joie de vivre and has a zest for life. She didn't kick up a fuss when she had to suffer six stitches after a fall, and didn't even whine when the nurses told her she had to go into the room on her own without me. She is the sporty one who loves to swim, dance, be out under the sun and just run around.
Unlike her siblings who sometimes say that they wished they were not the eldest or youngest, she is instead the one who never complains about her birth order and sees it as a blessing to have a big sister to look up to and a little brother to dote on.
Her joy was infectious when she first knew about baby #4 and she proudly declared "I'm going to be the best babysitter for Xiaodi." And I have no doubt she will be. After all, she is the sweet, sensitive daughter who helps me carry the groceries, holds my hand and tells me she can carry my backpack when we go out because she says Mama is pregnant and shouldn't carry heavy stuff.
2021 got off to a good start for her as she received her Character Award, got appointed to be a School Captain and has started on her leadership training sessions. Way to go, Ariel! Can't wait to see you shine even more on your stage in life and you can be sure that I will always be here cheering and rooting for you. Remember that you are special and will always hold a unique place in my heart, my dear.
Looking forward to seeing you become a big sister all over again. ❤

Good morning!
I'm writing an article on protective behaviors and thought it was so important that I share some of the safeguards that we use online with Ella Grace. We live a pretty public life but there are a few key areas that we are especially vigilant on in order to protect her.
***
1. NO LIVE POSTING
If you follow me on social media, you'll notice that very rarely do we live post unless we're on holiday somewhere really far away or have a specific event that we have agreed to live post on. It's why I only instastory at night and not always on the same day. This helps me help her keep safe from strangers knowing our schedule, where we are at what time or even knowing where we are right now.
2. NO SCHOOL PICTURES
Every mama has their crazy and this is certifiably mine. I am fiercely protective of people knowing where Ella Grace goes to school and we are very strict about not posting any school pictures online at all. I also made up Ella Grace's very non-descript uniform and the days that she does wear a school shirt, we either change after or I just don't post any pictures of her in it. I also delete any comments that make any reference to her school or her school friends (please be mindful of other people's littles too!) and we don't let her school post any marketing material that has her face on it.
3. NO SPECIFICS
While we do share a lot online, we are quite strict about not posting specifics like which playgroups we go to or what days we plan on going to it, what days her activities are and where, which pediatricians she sees, what events we are attending together for the week (unless it's a specific meet and greet). Again, it's so no one really can keep track of your routine or whereabouts and even if they figure it out, it takes a lot more work, thus making your little less vulnerable to being a victim.
4. NO HASHTAGS
I have quite a few hashtags that I use for work but Ella Grace doesn't have a generic one that I use for all her posts. While it isn't that hard to put her face to her name or how she’s definitely prominently featured on most of my posts (hi mama 😂😅), this is usually suggested so pedophiles don’t have instant easy access to a catalog of your child’s pictures.
5. NO PRIVATE PHOTOS / NO BIKINIS
In line with that, I also am really protective about the kind of photos she takes. Strictly no naked photos, photos of her on the toilet, photos of her in any compromising position or wearing anything that wouldn't be considered as modest swimwear. If we are on a photoshoot and she has to change outfits, I make sure that she does it either in a private area or that the photographer puts down his/her gear.
6. NO ADDRESSES
To protect ourselves and our friends, if I post a location of a home, it is usually quite generic. We have a mailing box for partnership deliveries and I don't give out our home address and try to avoid even mentioning the area if I can.
7. NO PERSONALIZED ANYTHING
While my OCD heart loves personalized anything, I don't personalize or embroider her name on her clothes, lunchbox, backpack, uniform, water bottle, etc. I might label it in a discreet place but never big enough that anyone off the street would immediately know her name by looking at it or if there was a picture taken of her, it's not instantly, her name is Ella Grace and she looks like this. Remember for little ones, if a stranger knows their name and calls them, they might go to them as they are still learning the difference between a nice stranger and trusted friend.
8. WOULD SHE MIND IF SHE READ/SAW THIS?
This is what I always come to when I'm writing stories or using her as my example, would she mind if she read or saw this as an adult later? Am I being respectful of her story and her journey? Am I using her story in the right way or is it just to make fun of her and something she might be embarassed of later?
***
While it's a lot more trickier for us to keep her sheltered online, it's a decision that my husband and I made together. We sat down and discussed the safeguards we felt passionately about and made sure that we had plans in place to keep her safe.
Not everyone will have the same amount of mama bear crazy, my hope in sharing this is that you'll be able to make an informed decision for whatever works for your family.
Everyone parents differently and that's okay. Share this but don't judge. Protect your mama tribe but don't shame. Awareness is key and I know this with all my heart that mamas standing up and showing up for one another can change the world.
Let's keep those babies safe! <3
