I can relate. This happened so many times to me while living in Taiwan, where I unknowingly dropped my wallet or cell phone, only to have someone chase me down to return them to me. There were even a few times where I didn’t even realize my stuff was gone until long after I lost them, but was still able to get them back because someone was nice enough to turn them in to the front desk or counter of wherever I had been. 💚 🇹🇼

「忘れ物」を英語で表現すると？

うっかり物を置き忘れてしてしまったとき、「あー、忘れ物した！」と日本語では言いますが、とても簡単な表現である「忘れ物」をいざ英語で自然に表現しようとすると、「なんて言ったらいいんだろう？」と思う人も少なくないのではないでしょうか？そこで今回は、普段ネイティブがよく使う「忘れ物」を表現する4つのフレーズをご紹介します。

1) Forget something
→「忘れ物をする」

Forgetは「忘れる」を意味することから、forget somethingは「忘れ物」を表す最も一般的な表現です。例えば、「車に財布を忘れた」は「I forgot my wallet in the car.」、「何か忘れ物をしているような気がする」は「I feel like I'm forgetting something.」、「忘れ物がないよう確認をするように」は「Make sure you're not forgetting anything.」という具合に使われます。
＜例文＞
I've got to run back into the house, I forgot something.
（ちょっと忘れ物したから、家にいったん戻るわ。）
Please take care not to forget anything.
（お忘れ物に十分お気を付けください。）
Oh no! I forgot my phone at home!
（やばい！携帯を家に忘れてきた。）

2) Leave something somewhere
→「（どこどこに）忘れ物をする」
Leave somethingは何かをある場所に置くことを意味することから、携帯や鍵、財布や鞄などをどこかに置き忘れたときにこの表現が使われます。例えば、車の鍵をホテルの部屋に忘れた場合は「I left my car keys in the room.（部屋に車のカギを置き忘れてきた。）」と表現したり、クレジットカードを無くして探している友達に対して、「I think you left it at the bar.（バーに忘れていると思うよ。）」という具合に使われます。
＜例文＞
Do you guys mind if we go back to the hotel? I left my wallet in the room.
（ホテルに戻っていい？財布忘れちゃって。）
Maybe you left your sunglasses in the train? Let's go talk to the station worker.
（電車の中にサングラスを忘れたんじゃない？駅員に相談してみよう。）
Did I leave my jacket at your house? Can you check the living room?
（君の家にジャケット忘れたかも。リビングルームを確認してくれない。）

3) Do you have / got everything?
→「忘れ物ない？」

相手に忘れ物がないかと尋ねるときに使われる定番の質問が「Do you have / got everything?」です。日本語に直訳すると「全て持った？」になり、所持品が全てあることを確認する時に用いられる言い方です。どこかへ出発する前や宿泊したホテルを出るときに、「忘れ物はないですか？」と一言声をかけたい時に使える便利な言い回しです。
✔「Are you not forgetting anything?」でも間違いではないが、「Do you have / got everything?」の方がナチュラルな響がある。
✔日常会話ではDoを省いて、「You have / got everything?」と言うことも一般的。
＜例文＞
Do you guys have everything? OK, let's hit the road!
（みんな忘れ物ないね？オッケー、それでは出発しましょう！）
You got everything? Keys, wallet, cell phone?
（忘れ物ないね？鍵、財布、携帯、全部ある？）
Before we leave let's double check the room to make sure we have everything.
（部屋を出る前に、忘れ物がないかもう一度部屋を確認しましょう。）

4) Lost and found
→「忘れ物（カウンター）」

デパートや駅などにある「忘れ物」コーナーを、英語でlost and foundと言います。lost and foundは「無くしたものがまた見つかった」と言う意味になります。また、日本語では「忘れ物カウンター」などと言いますが、英語ではlost and foundだけで通じ、「カウンター」などを付け加える必要はありません。
＜例文＞
〜会話例１〜
A: I dropped my scarf on the train, how can I find it?
（マフラーを電車に忘れたみたい！どうしよう！）
B: Let’s ask the station attendant where the lost and found is.
（駅員に忘れ物カウンターがどこにあるか聞いてみよう！）
〜会話例２〜
A: Could you tell me where your ‘lost and found’ is?
（忘れ物カウンターはどこですか？）
B: It’s on the 3rd floor by men’s clothing.
（三階の紳士服のそばにあります。）
(Announcement) “We have had a cell phone delivered to the lost and found, if you are the owner, please come to the lost and found counter on the 3rd floor.”
