9 common phrases you didn't know have dark origin stories
Riding shotgun
"Riding shotgun" is the ideal place to ride during on a road trip. But in the Old West, the person sitting in the passenger seat was required to do a whole lot more than find the perfect radio station.
Stagecoach drivers in the Old West needed a person to literally "ride shotgun." The passenger would carry a shotgun in order to scare off robbers who might want to attack them, according to Reader's Digest.
Highway robbery
Most people would agree that paying $10 for your favorite cup of coffee is highway robbery. But the original definition of highway robbery once meant literally robbing travelers on or near the highway. The first known usage of the phrase was in 1611.
Painting the town red
For you and your crew, "painting the town red" probably means getting glammed up for a fun night of drinks and dancing. However, the phrase originates from a night out that makes dancing on the bar seem tame.
Back in 1837, the Marquis of Waterford went out for a night of drinking with some of his friends, according to Phrases.org. Afterward, the group went through the streets of a small English town destroying property. They broke windows, knocked over flower pots, and damaged door knockers. But things got really crazy when they got their hands on some red paint and literally painted the town red, including doors, a tollgate, and a swan statue.
Pulling someone’s leg
You probably think that pulling someone's leg is all in good fun. After all, what's the harm in a little joke, right? This commonly used phrase that today means playing an innocent joke meant something a lot more sinister years ago.
Thieves in 18th and 19th Century London would drag their victims to the ground by their legs in order to rob them, according to Phrases.org.
Paying through the nose
You won't be happy if you think you're paying through the nose for something. Although you may feel like you're getting ripped off, at least you get to keep your face intact. The roots of this commonly used idiom come from a brutal tactic of The Dane Vikings of slitting someone's nose from tip to eyebrow if the person refused to pay their tax, according to Grammarist.
如果你覺得自己paying through the nose for something(為某件東西花了很多錢),肯定高興不起來。
如果有人read you the riot act 那你就有大麻煩了
After your parents "read you the riot act" for breaking curfew, you might have been facing a few weeks in your room without a television. But in 18th Century England, being read the Riot Act meant you could be facing time behind bars.
The Riot Act was implemented in 1715 and stated that the British government could consider any group of 12 or more people a threat to public safety and be ordered to break up, according to Atlas Obscura. Anyone refusing to disperse could be arrested or forcibly removed from the premises.
Letting the cat out of the bag
Today, "letting the cat out of the bag" is used to mean spilling someone's secret. But one of the supposed origins of the phrase was rooted in deceit.
在現代,letting the cat out of the bag指的是洩露某人的秘密。
Supposedly in Medieval times, farmers would go to markets to purchase pigs. Most of the time, their bag would contain the animal they paid for. But if they bought from a shady dealer, they would open their bag to find an unpleasant surprise - their pricey pig had been swapped for a much less expensive cat.
But as Mental Floss notes, there are quite a few holes with this theory.
Baker's dozen
You may be thankful to count on that 13th roll in your baker's dozen, but you can think a rather sinister rule for its creation.
It all traces back to a 13th-century British rule called the Assize of Bread and Ale. The rule stated that if bakers were caught selling smaller or low-quality bread to customers, they could have their hands chopped off.
That's why it was just easier to throw a 13th piece into the pile — thus creating the baker's dozen.
Meeting a deadline
When you get that big report to your boss on time, "meeting a deadline" is a good thing. But the phrase was coined during the American Civil War and had some deadly consequences.
The deadline was apparently a line inside of the area where Federal prisoners of war were kept. If a prisoner attempted to cross the line, they would be shot, according to Bloomsbury International.

(English and Chinese version)

English version
This was my first time to New Zealand. For those who have never been here before, I reckon that planning the trip is going to be worth it. New Zealand is really by far the most beautiful country I’ve ever been, with beautiful scenery everywhere as if a painting is following you around.
My boyfriend and I rented a car when we were in Queenstown and Auckland. There is no need to apply for international license to drive in NZ for Malaysian.
A little advice for you, I strongly recommend (or compulsory) you guys to rent a car if you’re coming to Queenstown. It’s much more convenient because you’ll be driving a lot to places outside of Queenstown. On top of that, you can stop by anywhere and anytime for photos and enjoy the magnificent view. And I do not recommend you to rent a car in Auckland, due to the difficulty of finding a parking and the convenience of using their public transports.
Also, we actually booked a few activities such as Heli glacier, skydiving, mount cook trekking and so on, but these activities got cancelled due to the weather. So here’s a little advice, check the weather forecast before your trip and try to arrange your activities on the first few days so you are able to arrange at later dates of your trip if your activity gets cancelled due to the weather.
Regarding the airbnb that we stayed in Queenstown, it was facing an incredible view with an outdoor spa! Most importantly, it was a crazy bargain at only around RM300-400 per night (it could have been more expensive by now). You can also look for cheaper air bnb. After all you definitely won’t be spending much time in the stay other than sleeping in it.
Here's the link to airbnb (https://www.airbnb.co.nz/rooms/11422391?s=51), for first time airbnb user, get MYR105 off by using this link (www.airbnb.co.nz/c/cloh116).
10 days has never been enough to explore the whole NZ, I guess it takes a month to travel the south island. We spent most of our time in south island, for north island we only travelled to Auckland. I personally prefer south island more and had the opportunity to visit Milford Sound, Glenorchy, Lake Pukaki, Lake Tekapo, Wanaka, and so on.

23rd Learning Session Recap - Home Decor Feng Shui Walkthrough
(English version below)
.....................
On 22nd March 2017, Master Dai Hu held a learning session at IKEA Tampines on "Home Decor Feng Shui Walkthrough", and imparted knowledge on how to choose the right kind of furnishing for your own home to get empowerment from the good Feng Shui.
Before the event officially began, Master Dai Hu took out a antique-looking Luo Pan (Chinese compass) and introduced it as the "Treasure Chest Of the Sunlight & Moonlight". He told everyone its origin and explained the auspicious and intricate designs on the chest.
Master Dai Hu had intended to gift this to his 16th disciple, as a lineage keepsake. However, there was no suitable person after years of wait. After his explanation, Master presented the Luo Pan to his 9th disciple, who had been learning from him for 11 years. That night was just 9 days short of her 11th anniversary of discipleship.
Master Dai Hu entrusted on her: It was a deliberate move to gift her this lineage Luo Pan at IKEA. The Chinese name of IKEA is 宜家, which means bringing benefits to families, or suitable for homes. It is Master Dai Hu's hope that the disciple would make good use of what she has learnt to benefit thousands and thousands of families, and propagate the ancient wisdom of Chinese Metaphysics.
This Treasure Chest of the Sunlight & Moonlight contains the secret wisdom of the Universe, and the Dragon and Phoenix painting on its cover signifies prosperity brought by these mythical creatures. When this disciple is able to use it well, she shall unlock the secret code of the Universe and help many suffering families.
Master Dai Hu asked all participants to be witnesses to this significant ceremony.
Highlights of the Walkthrough:
1. The deciding factor in your fate transformation lies in having full faith in Master's advice and implementing it.
2. Master Dai Hu values a person's morals and virtues more than money. Therefore, your money will not move Master Dai Hu to provide his service to you.
3. If you are genuinely determined to change your destiny, you should attend every Learning Session and event, and not tell Master Dai Hu that you needed a break.
4. Master Dai Hu asked the participants: Which area of the house is most important?
5. Why is this area of the home so critical in Home Feng Shui?
6. If a person does not exercise, his luck will stagnate. Why does a river gives out a stench? Because its water flow is choked. Once it smells, the good luck stops flowing.
7. Feng Shui always revolves around Qi energy, energies from the land, Yin and Yang elements, etc.
8. What are the consequences if your main door is facing the wrong direction?
9. How can you tell which family member wield the most influence?
10. A detailed Feng Shui analysis involves not only the house structure. It takes into account the furniture and other decorative pieces, and how they are put together.
11. There are Feng Shui elements in everything at home, be it your wall paper, sofa, coffee table, carpet, flowers on the table, etc.
12. In order to be really precise, we need to go into the details like measurement, color, shapes and patterns of your home furnishing.
13. Families in today's modern society are afflicted with many problems due to bad Feng Shui. This stems from their ignorance and blindly following the latest trends in home decoration.
14. Master Dai Hu explained the meanings of the different colours.
15. Families in today's modern society are afflicted with many problems, as they blindly pursue novel designs in their home. They do not realise that if such designs do not conform to the fundamentals of good Feng Shui, they are planting the seed for more trouble ahead.
16. What does the material of your sofa has anything to do with your home Feng Shui?
17. Why is it important to select an auspicious date and time for your renovation works?
18. With such a wide variety of lightings available, which are the most suitable ones for your home?
19. A lighting set that looks like a bird cage, does it bode disaster or good fortune?
20. Master Dai Hu generously advised each participants, based on their individual Bazi, the suitable furniture, that is both practical and trendy looking.
Nearing the end of the event, Master Dai Hu saw a colourful and vibrant looking carpet. He spelled out to everyone how this carpet can help in the Feng Shui of a house, and encouraged all participants to buy. He went to give a detailed explanation, including the exact spot to place the carpet to reap the biggest benefit!
Many people mistook home Feng Shui as the need to buy expensive auspicious ornaments. Through this activity, Master Dai Hu demonstrated that through the simple and appropriate application of normal household items, good Feng Shui and prosperity can still be achieved. The only catch is whether the Feng Shui Master is honest and accomplished to guide you.
