While the pandemic may have forced us to cancel our regular cantata concerts for the rest of 2020, it certainly hasn’t quashed our musical spirit! After offering special broadcasts in March, April and May on the cantatas of our cancelled concert programme, from June onwards, we will be offering – on each of our planned concert dates – new performances and programmes via live streaming.
For our next programme on Friday 19 June, Rudolf Lutz is going to offer us something new: in response to the numerous comments and questions from our international community, he will explore the fascinating topic of improvisation! What is the role of improvisation in classical music, especially in baroque music and Bach’s oeuvre? And what is improvisation, exactly? How does it work? Join Rudolf Lutz for explanations and demonstrations streamed live from the church in Stein, Switzerland.

Lecture-recital on improvisation with Rudolf Lutz (keyboard and organ)
Rudolf Lutz is not only regarded in the music world as an eloquent pedagogue, able to explain complex compositional contexts in a vivid way, but he is also one of the most sought-after improvisers worldwide. He will give his presentation in English to do justice to our large Internet community.
The church of Stein AR has a very valuable instrument built by Orgelbau Kuhn AG in 1985. We love to hold organ recitals there, and many visitors of the "Appenzeller Bachtage" know the beautiful church because of "Singen in der Früh", the popular sing-along programme in our festival in August.
Cantata performances of the J.S. Bach Foundation
Our cantata performances will be postponed until the end of the covid crisis. We hope to resume our performing activities in January 2021.

Bach leads us from the valley of death and darkness to the final and light Last Supper in Paradise. Rudolf Lutz will demonstrate on the organ (Friday, April 17th, 2020, from 6.45 P.M. onwards) that the movements of BWV 4 "Christ lag in Todesbanden" could also be interpreted as chorale preludes.

There is not much else we could do (with the means still available and permitted) in order to maintain our memories of the cantata concert we had originally planned, but performing the very piece of music—just in a different way, namely with our proven one-man ensemble, Rudolf Lutz, at the keyboard and on the organ.

Programme
Friday, April 17th, 2020, from 6:45 P.M. onwards
Rudolf Lutz will demonstrate on the organ at the church of Stein that the movements of this cantata could also be interpreted as chorale preludes. While Bach certainly set out to demonstrate his striking ability to illuminate the individual paintings that the cantata movements represent, Rudolf Lutz will illuminate the complexity of chorale preluding on the basis of this cantata.
In view of the prevailing epidemic and its serious consequences, but also and especially because of the text and the music, this will not be an easy fare. Consolation is not in sight. We cannot change it, neither can we gloss over the current situation nor play down the story told at Easter. Who would have thought until very recently that a sentence by Luther such as "the strangler can no longer harm us" would suddenly become today’s thrusting prayer?
1. Sinfonia
2. Versus 1
Christ lag in Todes Banden
für unsre Sünd gegeben,
er ist wieder erstanden
und hat uns bracht das Leben.
Des wir sollen fröhlich sein,
Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein
und singen halleluja. Halleluja.
3. Versus 2
Den Tod niemand zwingen kunnt
bei allen Menschenkindern;
das macht’ alles unsre Sünd,
kein Unschuld war zu finden.
Davon kam der Tod so bald
und nahm über uns Gewalt,
hielt uns in seinem Reich gefangen.
Halleluja.
4. Versus 3
Jesus Christus, Gottes Sohn,
an unsre Statt ist kommen
und hat die Sünde weggetan,
damit dem Tod genommen
all sein Recht und sein Gewalt;
da bleibet nichts denn Tods Gestalt,
den Stachel hat er verloren.
Halleluja.
5. Versus 4
Es war ein wunderlicher Krieg,
da Tod und Leben rungen;
das Leben da behielt den Sieg,
das Leben behielt den Sieg,
es hat den Tod verschlungen.
Die Schrift hat verkündiget das,
wie ein Tod den andern fraß,
ein Spott aus dem Tod ist worden.
Halleluja.
6. Versus 5
Hie ist das rechte Osterlamm,
davon Gott hat geboten,
das ist hoch an des Kreuzes Stamm
in heißer Lieb gebraten.
Das Blut zeichnet unser Tür,
das hält der Glaub dem Tode für,
der Würger kann uns nicht mehr schaden.
Halleluja.
7. Versus 6
So feiren wir das hohe Fest
mit Herzensfreud und Wonne,
das uns der Herr erscheinen läßt.
Er ist selber die Sonne,
der durch seiner Gnaden Glanz
erleuchtet unsre Herzen ganz,
der Sünden Nacht ist verschwunden.
Halleluja.
8. Choral Versus 7
Wir essen und leben wohl
in rechten Osterfladen;
der alte Sauerteig nicht soll
sein bei dem Wort der Gnaden.
Christus will die Koste sein
und speisen die Seel allein,
der Glaub will keins andern leben.
Halleluja.

Live: Rudolf Lutz - Introduction to BWV 106, organ concert based on the "Actus Tragicus"
J. S. Bach Foundation
Introduction to the cantata BWV 106 at the keyboard, organ concert in the form of an improvisation based on the "Actus Tragicus"
"Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit", the cantata BWV 106, also known as "Actus tragicus", is an extraordinary occurrence. It is simply not the right time to perform it. The measures taken against Covid-19 prohibit us from doing so. With the necessary humility, we now must wait until the world is healthy again.
But we will not let the virus get us down!
Instead of the concert, which had been planned to be held without an audience, our music director, Rudolf Lutz, will perform next Friday at the church in Stein (AR) as a one-man ensemble.

Wesley: good style. Nice change ups and really good cadence. Also very strong stage presence, although his outfit looks kind of college nerdy but it works for him. Needs to change up his style so that he stands out more. The dancing needs more work, feels like he’s trying to hard and some shots but that’s OK because they’re college kids.
羅福公:really good. Strong stage presence and strong emoting. Excellent incorporation of Japanese, Chinese, and English. Although, some of the English pronunciation was way off even in the name of trying to make things rhyme. Aside from that his style is cool and not much to really improve. Dresses like a deep-sea fisherman from the movie life aquatic with Steve Zissou
Third guy: technically really decent rapper. Although the drunken/lazy Mumble rap tongue rhyme scheme has been done better by 蛋頭. Really liked the HAM part towards the end, but the incorrect incorporation of hip-hop lingo and lines from other popular American rap songs(Migos) was a bit off putting. Also most of the English is mispronounced.
Gfate: I didn’t get what you were trying to do at all. Are you rapping? Ranting? Mumbling? Nice voice tho.
Fifth Guy: Really dig his swag. His voice is deep and smooth. LIke the elongation style and his rhyming style just sways. Rapping style is very musical. Sounds like an instrument. Very confident and natural in front of the camera.
Kerrita: Nice singing voice but sometimes out of tune. Usage of pitch correction is pretty obvious. The English took me out. Also her jazz singing style doesn’t really match the song. Too much vibrato and execution of syncopation wasn’t precise. However, the rap was really good. I’d like to hear her rap more. Score: 3.0
As a Group: If you’re going to rep your school/present yourself as a crew, then you need to have some overall theme(dress, swag, etc) that presents you as a team. This video feels like random people came together for one project, but they don’t really know each other or have chemistry. Find something that makes your school/group unique and exploit it.

Nissan today unveiled the Z Proto, signaling the company's intent to launch a new generation of the legendary Z sports car. Shown at a virtual event beamed around the world from the Nissan Pavilion in Yokohama, the prototype car features a new design inside and out, as well as a V-6 twin turbocharged engine with a manual transmission.
First hinted at in a video named "Nissan A-Z" in May, the Nissan Z Proto pays full respect to 50 years of Z heritage. At the same time, it's a thoroughly modern sports car.
"The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan," said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. "It's a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and it's proof of our ability to do what others don't dare to do, from A to Z. As a Z fan myself, I'm excited to announce that the next Z is coming."
A global community of fans young and old attended today's virtual unveiling. Members of the Z Club in Japan, ZCON participants in Nashville, Tennessee, and enthusiasts in various other markets tuned in for the event.
Exterior: past meets future
Penned and developed by the design team in Japan, the Z Proto boasts a fresh, attractive exterior design with a silhouette that communicates respect for the original model. It sports a bright yellow pearlescent paint – a tribute to a popular paint scheme on both the first generation Z (S30) and the 300ZX (Z32) – and a black roof.
Combining a retro theme with one that also projected futurism was challenging, said Alfonso Albaisa, head of design at Nissan.
The shape of the hood and the canted, teardrop-shaped LED headlights are both unmistakable reminders of the original Z. The rectangular grille's dimensions are similar to the current model with the addition of oval grille fins to offer an updated modern look. The form continues to exude both sportiness and elegance.
The link to the original Z is most striking when viewing the Z Proto from the side. The roofline flows from the nose to the squared-off rear to create a distinctive first-generation Z profile whose rear edge was slightly lower than the front fender height giving the Z its unique posture. The signature transition from the rear quarter glass to the low-slung position of the rear tail adds to the effect.
The rear takes inspiration from the 300ZX (Z32) taillights, reinterpreted for the modern world. Set within a rectangular black section that runs across the rear and wraps around the outer edges, the LED taillights convey a sharp glow.
Lightweight carbon fiber treatments on the side skirts, front lower lip and rear valance ensure nimble performance. 19-inch alloy wheels and dual exhausts complete the Z Proto's striking road presence.
Interior: modern tech with a vintage touch
Designed to fit driver and passenger like a glove, the Z Proto's cabin seamlessly blends modern technology with vintage Z touches.
The interior design team sought advice from professional motorsports legends to give the Z Proto an ideal sports car cabin, both for road and track. This can be seen in the Z's instrumentation. All vital information is found in the 12.3-inch digital meter display and arranged to help the driver grasp it at a glance, such as the redline shift point at the twelve o-clock position.
The new, deep dish steering wheel offers the driver quick access controls without losing its vintage aesthetic.
Yellow accents are found throughout the cabin, including stitching on the instrument panel. The seats feature special yellow accenting and a layered gradation stripe in the center of the seats to create depth.
Sports car joy: an exhilarating, dynamic performer
The original Z was built to bring the joy and excitement of sports car ownership to as many people as possible.
Each new generation had a more powerful engine, although the Z is about more than power increases.
"Z is a balance of power and agility," Tamura continued. "It is a vehicle that creates a connection with the driver not just on the physical level, but emotionally, and responds to the driver's impulses."
Make no mistake though, the Z Proto packs a powerful punch. Under the elongated hood is an enhanced V-6 twin-turbocharged engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. As a prototype, work is now underway on synchronizing the power with the grace and control that has defined the Z for the past 50 years.
"With the launch this summer of the groundbreaking Ariya EV, we've started a new era of electrification and autonomous driving technology," said Uchida. "With the Z, we're bringing drivers the excitement of a pure sports car. For more than 50 years we have been creating the legend of Z together. I'm glad you're with us for the next exciting chapter. The new Z is on its way."

Viva La Vida (lyrics) by Coldplay:
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Calvary choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
ABOUT EDEN KAI:
Very few young talents offer the wide array of diverse skills as those possessed by Eden Kai (aka Yusuke Aizawa). An actor appearing on one of Japan’s most popular reality television shows, Terrace House - Aloha State, Yusuke was beloved by the millions of viewers watching the show as it was broadcast on Fuji Television in Japan, as well as via online service, Netflix streaming the show in nearly 200 countries. Eden’s time on the show allowed him to display his skills as a ukulele and guitar virtuoso, composer, singer-songwriter, and vocalist. His musical talents and role on Terrace House helped him to secure a spot performing at the upcoming Fuji Rock Festival, which is the largest outdoor music event in Japan. Eden also made history at the age of 16 when he became the first instrumentalist to ever win Grand Champion at the popular Brown Bags to Stardom talent competition in Hawaii.
Signed to one of Japan’s most prominent media conglomerates, JVC Kenwood Victor Entertainment, Eden is preparing for the widespread release of his first major album, Music for You. The album is scheduled to be released on June 21st. It follows two previous CDs released independently; Touch the Sky in 2015 and Feel the Earth in 2016. Touch the Sky received a finalist nomination for Instrumental Album of the Year at the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and the 2016 Hawaii Music Awards. Both Touch the Sky and Feel the Earth, as well as the singles featured on them, are available for purchase through his website, www.EdenKai.com, as well as on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, and Bandcamp.
Eden is steadfast in his belief that music can have a healing effect on the world. He has used his music and status as one of Japan’s biggest rising stars to help many organizations and causes. Proceeds from past songs and performances have been donated to benefit children from disaster-stricken countries, to purchase educational materials for a school in Bangladesh, and to support a health center in Haiti. He has also been active in supporting causes benefitting the victims of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, the recent Kumamoto earthquake, Easter Seals, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
