Game Preview
Marcus Camby has two goals tonight: lead Massachusetts to its first Final Four; avoid becoming a poster child for one of Allen Iverson's I-didn't-think-little-guys-could-do-that dunks.
The two aims may be inherently linked when top-seeded Massachusetts faces second-seeded Georgetown in the 6 p.m. NCAA East Regional final at the Georgia Dome.
The Minutemen (34-1) rely on the defensive presence of Camby, their 6-foot-11 All-America center and shot-blocker. The Hoyas (29-7) depend on the offensive fireworks of Iverson, their 6-foot All-America guard and acrobat.
They won't be guarding one another, but rest assured, they'll meet. Or perhaps collide is a better word, because Iverson's game is predicated on his headlong drives to the basket, which is where Camby will be waiting.
''It doesn't seem like he's 6-foot tall the way he gets up in the air,'' Camby said of Iverson. ''I know he can jump over me and dunk it, and I don't want to be anybody's poster child, so I'm going to try and block everything.''
Camby, the leading candidate for national Player of the Year, averages 3.8 blocks per game and is the fourth player in NCAA history to reach 300 blocks in his first three seasons. He is the primary reason the Minutemen are third nationally in field goal percentage defense at 38.5.
But don't think for a minute that Iverson will be deterred. He averages 25.1 points and has scored 30 or more in five of Georgetown's last nine games.
''It doesn't matter who's in there,'' Iverson said. ''I'm going to the hole anyway. I'm not going to change, even if there's two or three Marcus Cambys in there.''
And what about Carmelo Travieso, the UMass guard with a reputation for shutting down big-time scorers?
''I don't think anybody can play me one-on-one without handchecking me,'' Iverson said. ''That's just the way I am. I'm a very confident person.''
Confident enough to have attempted a Georgetown-record 29 shots in Thursday's semifinal victory against Texas Tech. Confident enough to keep shooting and driving when only 10 went in. Good enough to finish with a game-high 32 points, many coming in clutch situations.
''If I was on a team that just needed me to distribute the ball, that's what I'd do,'' Iverson said. ''Coach (John Thompson) gave me a role, and I accepted it. This team needs me to score.
''Before I came here, Coach Thompson told me he'd put the ball in my hands and let me play my style of basketball. He's been true to his word.''
Iverson has the Hoyas in their first regional final since 1989 and on the brink of their first Final Four since 1985. Camby has the Minutemen in their second consecutive East final and one game away from their first Final Four.
But both face daunting challenges besides one another. Camby must confront Georgetown's rugged front line players - Othella Harrington, Jahidi White, Ya-Ya Dia and company. Iverson must duel UMass guards Travieso and Edgar Padilla, composed veterans who will make him pay for any missteps.
The Hoyas undoubtedly will try to muscle the 220-pound Camby, much the way Oklahoma State and Big Country Reeves did in last year's East final, won by the Cowboys. Camby had just six points and four rebounds before fouling out, while Reeves dominated with 24 points and 10 boards.
''That game showed me what I needed to do to improve,'' Camby said. ''I can't forget about it because everybody brings it up.''

If the outcome was a surprise to anyone, those people need to check themselves.
Temple was faced with a huge task yesterday and didn't deliver. Not so much because of effort as inability.
Against Georgetown, the nation's fifth-ranked team, the Owls posed little resistance as sophomore sensation Allen Iverson went for 24 points. Victor Page, his freshman backcourt mate, added 18 - with an aerial show for emphasis - as the Hoyas breezed to a 74-49 win over Temple in the second round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament at USAir Arena.
The win advanced the Hoyas (2-0) to New York for the tournament semifinals Wednesday night against Georgia Tech. The Owls (1-1) headed home for an eight- day break.
"I learned a lot today," Temple coach John Chaney said. "I learned I've got some good people on this team.
"No one was pointing fingers at each other. It's easy to handle the high tide, and everyone's a good guy when you're winning. But when you lose, that's when you test the spirit of your players."
The framework of the game was established within a few seconds: The Hoyas would score off fastbreaks, follow layups or post moves, and score they would. And the Owls could do very little to stop them.
Jerome Williams (14 points, 12 rebounds) converted a layup on the first play of the game. A Temple turnover followed and Boubacar Aw scored on another layup, indicating what was on the horizon.
The Hoyas, sparked by a running jumper and two layups by Iverson, opened with an 11-2 run and kept going. Temple tried creeping up from behind, getting a follow slam by Huey Futch (seven points), and a couple of layups from Johnny Miller, but the closest the Owls got was seven points (30-23) with 4 minutes, 28 seconds left in the half.
Then Page went to work, hitting two free throws and two jumpers, then punctuating the half with a spectacular flying slam over Lynard Stewart, enabling Georgetown to go up, 42-27, at the break.
"You can never give Temple but so much," Georgetown coach John Thompson said. "They just chip away at you . . . But the key was the lack of that third guard. We knew they didn't have that, and we wanted to attack their guards and take advantage."
That would explain Temple's difficulty in running plays, setting screens, having anyone but the point guard distributing the ball. The Owls also had 14 turnovers and shot just 26 percent in the second half.
The bright spot, as expected, was Miller. The "other" sophomore guard was 0 for 5 on three-pointers in the first half, causing more problems for Temple, but came to life in the second half, finishing with 21 points on 9-for-22 shooting.
His help, however, was scarce.
Miller knifed his way through the lane numerous times, only to have his passes dropped or open layups missed. The turnovers fueled Georgetown's momentum, which made the outcome that much more predictable.
"We didn't play our game," Miller said after battling Iverson all day. ''Playing them is good for this team because of the pressure they threw at us, but losing never is good. We've got to come back from this and just play our game, that's all."
The Hoyas never stopped playing theirs as Iverson and Page took over in the second half. Steals, high-flying dunks, assists, rebounds . . . name it and they did it, and no one other than Miller had an answer.
Temple scored just four points in the first 6:20 of the second half. The Owls made just 33 percent of their shots, shot only seven free throws, were outrebounded, 47-34, and had just four assists.
It was a learning experience that might come in handy against the top-notch opponents Temple will play later this season. But it didn't make the day any better.
"The best time to test your team is the early portion of the season. That's why this was a good game for us," Chaney said.

If Allen Iverson ever becomes a New York Knick, watch out. The 6-foot Georgetown sophomore from Hampton, Va. entered last night's Big East quarterfinal game against Miami averaging 34 points per contest this season at Madison Square Garden. The Hurricanes did little to stop Iverson's Manhattan mastery, as Iverson struck for 38 points and Georgetown rebounded from a lackluster first half to dismiss Miami 92-62 before a sellout crowd of 19,544.
Georgetown 92, Miami 62
Allen Iverson scored 38 points to tie the second-highest total in Big East tournament history. The Hoyas (25-6) reached the semifinal round for the seventh time in eight years and the 14th over all. Miami (15-13) was within 3 points at halftime before the Hoyas outscored the Hurricanes, 51-24.
Iverson made 11 of 21 shots, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range. He made 10 of 11 free throws, with 6 assists, 6 turnovers and 2 steals. In the seven games Iverson has played at Madison Square Garden, the sophomore has averaged 32.2 points. His 38 points in a Big East tournament game trailed only Connecticut's Donyell Marshall, who scored 42 against St. John's two years ago.
Yet near the end, with the Hoyas comfortably ahead, Georgetown Coach John Thompson created a sense of urgency to Iverson's game. "He tells me the end of the game is my time, I should have the ball in my hands," Iverson said. "So if somebody else turns it over, he yells at me. I just tell my teammates: 'Let me get the ball. He'll scream at me.' "
Steve Rich, a Miami senior forward, scored 15 points, 11 of which came in the first half. Steven Edwards, Miami's leading scorer with an average of 13.2 points, did not score.
Georgetown holds the conference record with six tournament championships, twice as many as Syracuse, the next most successful program. But the Hoyas have not won a Big East title since 1989.
"As long as we play defense hard," Iverson said, "everything is going to work out for us."
