黑斯廷斯之戰(Battle of Hastings)是英國歷史上的諾曼征服(Norman conquest)中最具決定性的戰役，這也是歷史上最後一次有軍隊能成功的入侵英國本土，自那以後再也沒有人能成功征服英國。諾曼軍隊是由諾曼第公爵吉約姆二世(即征服者威廉William the Conqueror)所率領，行動在當年的九月底發動，於1066年10月14日，也就是將近一千年的今天在黑斯廷斯附近催生決定性的戰果，諾曼軍隊擊敗英格蘭的守軍，並擒殺了當時的英格蘭國王哈羅德二世(Harold Godwinson)。

創作於11世紀的貝葉掛毯忠實地描述了整個黑斯廷斯戰役的前後過程，圖片就是哈羅德二世壯烈殉國的畫面，包山包海的掛毯鉅細靡遺地記載該戰役中重要的人事物，甚至包括1066年4月出現在天空中的哈雷彗星，不過卻遺漏了這場諾曼征服的開幕，傳說征服者威廉在1066年9月29日首度踏足英國國土時不慎面朝下摔倒，為了不在軍隊面前出醜，他雙手捧沙站起來喊道：「我現在已經擁有了英國的土地!」

這個故事的真偽難辨，因為跟凱撒當年侵略不列顛的故事相似度實在太高，推測是征服者威廉的傳記作者為了讓他與凱撒有更多的共同點而編造的。
