Eka Pada Rajakapotasana II (one-legged king pigeon pose II) is not only a beautiful pose but a multi-beneficial one as well. As a backbend it stretches the spine, chest and neck, helping to release tension and calm the mind. It is also a hip opener, opening the back and outer hip areas of the front leg and the frontal hip area of the back leg. The quad muscles and ankle of the back leg as well as the groin area are stretched. Try this move in your next practice:
From downward-facing dog, bring your right leg forward between your hands and take your left knee to the earth for a deep lunge. Raise your arms, press your palms together and gaze up between the thumbs. Take a deep breath and be fully present in this moment. Bring your hands to the heart centre. Bend your left leg and slowly reach your hands over your head to grab the left foot.
Engage the muscles of your legs. Root down fiercely from the core of your pelvis through your left thighbone and knee and into the earth while keeping your right leg stable and strong. Breathe deeply, slowly release and repeat on the other side.
Always be safe. Listen to and honor your body and make modifications as needed. Post your photos (or video!) for a chance to win $100 @urban_slings voucher at the end of this week. Don’t forget to tag #MOVEJUMPLOVE @ufitsingapore @ozfit_singapore #mybeautifulactivelife #ozfit #ufitsingapore
