【Origin Stories - Fariz Isnaini, AyoBlajar AW#21】
I had a manager once back when I was working for P&G. He was a smart and diligent guy, very successful. I asked him one time whether or not I could be as successful as him and take over the branch office one day. Because I came from an engineering background, he said “no, you are going down a different path, to become a plant director--that should be good enough.” I felt dejected, and wanted nothing more than to prove him wrong.

I ended pursuing a PhD in strategic management from VU Amsterdam, in search of accumulating more knowledge in business. This period of my life was extremely tough. Racial discrimination was rampant and money was hard to come by. I took classes in the day, waited tables at night, and even sold bicycles on the side. This one time I went with my wife to a cafe and bought 2 donuts instead of 1. Despite overstretching our shoestring budget, I just felt like it would be a nice gesture after all our struggles; she cried in response.

During this time I was also active in leading the Indonesian Student Association in the Netherlands, and got a unique opportunity to meet an ex finance minister from Indonesia. He mentioned something that I would never forget: in order to have impact, you need to become a decision maker.

I came back to Indonesia in 2018 and briefly dabbled in politics before setting my sights on the world of startups. After a few failed cold starts spanning tourism to wellness, I decided to target a sector that was critical in putting me on my path in the first place--education.

There’s been so many ups and downs. I’ve almost lost track of our near-death experiences. I don’t think I’m the smartest guy in the room, but I’ve always found a way to climb out of tough situations. I’d have to thank my mom for that. She’s always said “the only limitation you have is in your mind.”

It's been a tough period for many, but particularly hard for the staff at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Not only have they been fighting COVID-19, but some have also faced discrimination by members of the public. People are understandably fearful, but it is no less distressing to see.

For a year plus, all of us have been fighting COVID-19 in one way or another, and because we all worked together our situation has steadily improved. We cannot let setbacks divide us or wear us down, because if we lose our unity, the virus has won.

I’m glad that in recent days many have come out to support TTSH staff. Some businesses have even offered promotions to support them.

本案件的事主 X 小姐，她在過渡期間向僱主出具醫生證明，仍未獲僱主批准使用女洗手間。今天 X 小姐已完成變性手術，身份證性別已更改，可名正言順地使用女性空間。兩年以來，同樣事情循環地發生在其他跨性別人士身上。X小姐決定在追訴期期滿之前，為跨性別人權打一杖，控告僱主歧視，還跨性別人士的廁所使用權。X 小姐財力有限，無力支付高昂訟費。現透過香港世界公民協會眾籌，希望籌得十五萬港元，彌補法援的差額，為跨性別平權踏出一小步。

Hong Kong case owner Miss X, despite having presented the doctor's certification to her employer during her transition, was refused access to female washrooms.  Today Miss X has completed the sex reassignment surgery and successfully change her ID card to female.  She no longer has issues accessing female spaces.  Two years passed. the same thing has happened recurrently to other transgender people.  Before the end of the limitation period, Miss X has decided to fight on behalf of the transgender community their rights of access to their desired washrooms by sueing her employer of discrimination.   Ms X has limited financial resources and is unable to absorb the huge costs of litigation.  Through the Association of World Citizens in Hong Kong, she hopes to raise HKD150,000 to cover the shortfall from her legal aid application and takes this small step to advance transgender rights in Hong Kong.
