Throwback to our last weekend’s urban hike where we explored the Tanjong Pagar area. The most interesting ‘hidden’ spot we found was the Tanah Kubur Diraja (Royal Cemetery), a Malay Burial ground. The graves belong to the Riau-Lingga branch of the Royal Johor family and the oldest of them date back to 1721! The headstones are painted in yellow or green - yellow being associated with royalty while green is the colour of Islam. And to think they are just located behind a HDB block in Bukit Purmei estate, but surrounded by a thick vegetation.
Other interesting spots we came across included a shophouse which has Singapore’s oldest surviving painted mural façade, Ducxton Plains Park which was Singapore’s first legit Rail Corridor and also home to a mysterious lone tomb!
