塞爾漢在新書《一出手就成交》坦言，自己擁有一項遠超過同業的優勢：他不在意單一客戶的成交量，而是把重點放在他們可能延伸出來的效益。假設每個顧客是一顆球，他會緊守著手上那顆，也會把球拋到空中，讓彼此互相牽引，他稱之為「拋球思維」。以拋球思維為核心，塞爾漢提供兩個實務心法：
1. 人們不喜歡被推銷，但喜歡和朋友一起購物。
2. 人們厭惡討價還價，但心情舒坦就願意妥協。
