Surprise...the long hair has finally had a trim! To usher in the new school year, I’ve decided to go with a classic look - I can definitely say that I’m feeling fresher with this new look now. Back-to-school ready? Check! ✅
Now that school has started once more, I’ve had to set aside a little less time for things like my poetry, songwriting, and other rekindled passions. This school year, I enter Fourths, or Year 10 - the fourth year of secondary school here in the UK. This term marks the start of my journey into the IGCSE course, which I’ll be examined in at the end of my next academic year. In total, I’m now studying 9 subjects: English, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Art, Drama, French, Latin and Ancient Greek. Yep, you read that right, I’m taking 3 languages as electives for my IGCSEs! 🤩
Now that the first week of school has passed, I’ve been able to do a few interesting things to kick off everything. The most notable one so far is that I have decided to audition for the Junior and Senior Production. Since I’m in Fourths, this year I can choose to audition for both the Junior and Senior Production. The Junior Production is an original play titled ‘Burn’, and for the Senior, it’s none other than the classic ‘Pride and Prejudice’! So far, I’ve auditioned for the Senior Production, and my audition for the Junior Production is this week - wish me luck! ✨
But honestly, that’s not all I’m excited about. Although these next two years will be incredibly busy now that we’re working towards our IGCSEs, I have a feeling that all of the academic and co-curricular parts of my school life now will prove to be invigorating and full of exciting opportunities. Here’s to a new academic year! 🙌🏻
Looking forward,

#Opinion by Ip Kin-yuen 葉建源 | "Now that Liberal Studies needs to be 'retitled', please don’t tell me the Bureau is looking for a sponsor, then going to rename it as 'XXX Liberal Studies'. If this is really the case, potential sponsors will queue up for it, as it is a compulsory subject for all senior secondary school students! Of course, I ‘ve been kidding. The truth is the actual English name of the commission is Committee on the Renamed Subject. Rename simply means giving another name. It has nothing to do with 'title'."

"通識科要「重新冠名」,難道是要找一個贊助商,重新命名為「XXX通識科」嗎?如果這是真的,作為一個全港高中生都要修讀的必修科,競逐的贊助商一定不少!這當然是開玩笑,事實並非如此,委員會的英文名字叫Committee on the Renamed Subject,所謂Renamed,只是簡簡單單的重新命名而已,何來「冠名」的意思呢?"

I’ve received a few questions from students and teachers about my e-learning experience since lockdown. Well, I’m not sure about other schools in the UK, but for my school, we use a variety of means for our online learning: live lessons, set work, and Internet websites. For your information, I’m currently in Year 8, which is the second year of secondary school. Things might be different in other years, but I’ll talk about our e-learning for Year 8.
Our online learning is exactly the same as a 9am-4pm normal school day, from registration until the end of the day, with 8 periods and the same timetable, except we do it all at home. The subjects we’ve done through online learning are English, Religious Studies, History, Biology, Maths, Latin, Drama, Art, French, Physics, Design and Technology, Geography, Music, Chemistry, and Sports. Some were through live lessons, and other times, we were set work, where we had to work and then submit it digitally at the end of every lesson. And of course, we have break and lunch at normal times.
For live lessons, we’ve been using an app called Zoom, which is widely used by other schools and universities. Each session lasts for 40 minutes, and there are different things both the teacher and the students can do. If it’s required, you can turn on your webcam, or just have the mic on. There is an option to mute the mic, so not everyone is talking over each other at the same time. And what’s really useful is that you can share your computer screen with others, so you can put up notes, a question, or anything else you need pupils to see.
In terms of set work, we’ve been using Google Classroom most of the time. That’s where teachers can set assignments, post announcements, and ask questions. We’ve also been set work on Firefly, our school’s intranet system.
For Maths specifically, we’ve had live lessons on Zoom where the teacher shared their screen with us so we could see the notes and answer questions. Also, we were set work on a website called MyiMaths, where the teacher can set tasks related to specific topics. This could also be the case for other subjects, such as languages, where you could be set tasks on websites like Duolingo etc.
Personally, I find that the live lessons are the most successful for introducing new topics or going over more difficult work, because the teacher is there to explain the work to you, and if you’re stuck, you can ask them a question. However, set tasks work just as well if the work is more straightforward.
Hopefully, this little bit of my e-learning experience could be useful for both students who want to know more about what e-learning is like, and for teachers who want to create an ideal work environment for online school. If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’d be more than happy to share about my e-learning experience.
Stay safe,
Omar Mukhtar

Today's shokunin spotlight is Takeda Senko, a Nagoya family crest black kimono dyeing facility. Of course, they dye colored kimono and other items as well! http://takedasenko.jp/
Many thanks to them for letting us film inside their factory!! We actually recorded this over a year ago, and also have a couple other shokunin videos to finish editing as well before we start interviewing new shokunin. Unfortunately the editing takes us a LONG time to finish by ourselves, hence the super long wait... ^^;; Hopefully the others will be up more quickly!
Shokunin (職人) is the Japanese word for craftsman or craftswoman. These are the men and women who preserve Japan’s traditional legacy of hand-crafting products including swords, drums, fans, pottery and more. Many shokunin use crafting methods that have been passed down for hundreds of years, sometimes within a single family. But because most things can be mass-produced these days, shokunin, and their skills, are disappearing. So, we want to help protect Japan’s historical arts by spreading awareness and broadening their market within Japan and overseas!
You can support Japan's shokunin by spreading awareness of their crafts, (and of course purchasing them, if you want!) Although, most shokunin don't have websites that ship overseas. You may unexpectedly stumble upon a shokunin's workshop when you're in Japan, so don't hesitate to drop in! Every craftman/woman and artisan we've met so far has been incredibly kind and happy to show us around!
