This quiet piece… is probably the most difficult thing I’ve ever written and performed, my whole life.
[.gif]'s Hail Nothing took years to finish; sub:shaman's songs are crazy challenging; Beside Ourselves was 300 hours of rehearsal; Displaced Persons’ Welcome Dinner was an impossible task… and yet this little thing took more out of me than I have ever given to a work.
But as I was shaking in front of lights and cameras… the Checkpoint Theatre team stood by with tissues, hot milo, and endless warmth. Huzir cried with me during our final take and in those silent, shared sniffles… I could feel the air in the room wrap its arms around me.
You don’t have to like it –– it’s awkward, frenzied, uncomfortable… and perhaps just solipsistic ramblings. But it means the world to me that I was given this voice, and the safe space to lay myself bare in a way I never thought I could.
I am deeply honoured to be a part of Two Songs and a Story (An online video series), especially alongside this stellar cast –– Ants Chua, inch, Jo Tan, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai, and directed by Huzir Sulaiman and Joel Lim.
The show opens this Thursday and runs till 31 Aug ✨ I can’t wait to see what the other 4 artists did with their pieces.
Tickets are on sale now! –– https://checkpoint-theatre.org/event/two-songs-and-a-story/
Your ticket will be a link that allows you to watch any of our works within 72 hours. I do hope you join us x

"Incarnation" Book Launch
Incarnation, the latest creative effort of multidisciplinary artist Yao Jui-chung, is a book comprising photographs of gigantic sculptures of Buddhist deities and folklore icons, taken over an 18-month period between 2016 and 2017 at over 230 locations around Taiwan, including temples, cemeteries, parks, and amusement parks. The book is a cold-eyed documentation of the fantastical world of gods and icons, some dilapidated, others cared-for, conjured by the Han people through their solipsistic projection of the self. These objects of desire highlight the interrelationship between geographical locations and sociocultural politics. The artist evades narrative by intentionally leaving out people in each frame, shunning religious gatherings or festivities. Instead, he focuses on the physical embodiment of the gods — a projection of the devotees’ fervent desire. Adopting a typological approach, he captures not the local folk culture, but the landscape that cradles the staggering sculptures; not peculiar cases but mundane existence. Devoid of humans, events, or disasters, this body of work explores the manifestation of human wants in a clinical approach that eschews religious architecture, folk activities, or worship ceremonies. In a dispassionate, monotone palette, this new photography series scrutinizes the inextricable connections between man, religion, and faith.
