《Beginner’s Guide for Hardware Startup (4) – What is MP? 》
「Design」and「Manufacturing」has always been two different things. Many hardware products can do design, but it’s hard to actually get into mass production. Despite the 80% delay rate of the common hardware startup campaign, there is still some very successful cases in industry. 「Pebble」, an E-Paper smartwatch for iPhone and Android. The campaign on Kickstarter crowdfunding 10 million US$, and successfully accomplish the production and shipping the product after 1 year. In 2015 even pledged record breaking 20 million US$ for their new campaign.
MP-Mass Production is the production of large amounts, large-scale of standardized products. In PVT phase we produce certain number of product that comply with manufacturer’s standard procedure, and simulate if the facilities and equipment can meet the capacity of mass production demand, that confirm the design can implement into the mass production phase correctly. The MP phase consists on some major tasks, such like yield test, failure analysis, and packing design. In the mass production stage, it can finally start to fasten and automated the production process and attain the profit.

《Beginner’s Guide for Hardware Startup (1) - What is EVT? 》
Speaking of the hardware manufacturing, the EVT/DVT/PVT phases are “must have” knowledge if you want to prevent early stage fail of the average failure rate 32% and 81% delivery delay rate in all hardware startups (according to the statistics of Kickstarter.)
The EVT/DVT/PVT phases start after the design and development process. EVT performed on prototypes to verify if the design meets the specification. During this phase engineer will put their idea and design on the “Big board” – which is a big circuit board contains the design they need to verify and test. The best situation is only do the EVT phase once to save the cost of production. Generally speaking, EVT stage consists of basic functional tests, parametric measurements, and specification verification.
