★ BECAUSE OF vs. DUE TO 的差異
(誤) He was frustrated due to his broken iPhone.
His frustration was due to his broken iPhone.
He was frustrated because of his broken iPhone.
為何第一句是錯的? 簡單而言:
“Due to” is an adjective, which means it can only modify pronouns and nouns, according to the purest English grammar rules.
Due to 是形容詞,不會去修飾到動詞 (He "was" frustrated), 只能修飾名詞 (His "frustration"...)
“Because of” is an adverb, which means it can only modify verbs, adjectives and clauses, but not nouns and pronouns.
Because of 是副詞,修飾副詞、動詞、形容詞。 不會修飾名詞。
★ 記憶法:
One trick you can use is to substitute “due to” with “caused by”. If the substitution does not work, then you probably shouldn’t use “due to” there. For example:
My low grade was due to lack of time.
My low grade was caused by lack of time.
I missed the conference due to the typhoon.
I missed the conference caused by the typhoon. (誤)
上面兩組, 很明顯地最後一句不行。可從兩個觀點去看
(1) missed 是動詞,不可由due to 形容詞來修飾
(2) I missed the conference caused by the typhoon.
語意改變,也造成不合邏輯的語意---颱風造成的會議)
