💕「愛台灣,我的選擇」系列第16發:熱愛台灣詩的美國學者白瑞梅(Amie Parry)

💕Why I chose Taiwan #16 – Amie Parry
“I grew up in a small city in inland California called San Bernardino. I went to college and graduate school in San Diego. I got my PhD in literature. We were all expected to learn at least one language, so I did Chinese. I traveled to Taiwan with a friend right after I graduated from college in 1987. We came here to teach English and study Chinese for six months, then I traveled around Asia by myself with a backpack.
I originally wanted to study classical Chinese poetry. I got a Fulbright grant and I came back here. I started going to the poetry nights that were happening at that time. I met some of the modernist poets, and I switched my focus to the modernist poetry of the 60s, 70s, and 80s in Taiwan. I wrote my dissertation on modernism as a way of understanding the parts of modernity that are hard to know in the existing political language that we inherit. I think that experience in historical formation is always more complicated than the language.
These poems are not explicitly political; they're very experimental and strange. At the time, the modernist poets I met were mostly 外省, men who had been drafted and come over with the KMT, so they had experienced war and displacement, and a very intense and traumatic historical moment. People experienced it differently, and at that time, it was a hard thing to talk about. Later, I wrote a book about poetry, but I just focused on one or two poets I find really, really fascinating. And I was asking some of the same kinds of questions: how can these poems help you think about certain topics that are hard to think about?
At that time, Modernist poetry was a kind of an institution already. There was a journal called 現代詩, “Modern Poetry,” a really important journal that most of these poets were published in. Some of them combined poetry and theater. There's just so much going on in Taiwan in terms of poetry and performance and literature. It's just amazing. And I'm very interested in it at all, but I haven't kept up. After I finished my dissertation, I got a job offer at 交大. I thought, wow, there's something really amazing happening intellectually here. When my first book came out, it actually got an award in the U.S., and I was so surprised. I didn't even know it had been nominated. I asked them, ‘Why did you choose my book?’ And they said, because one of the chapters has a transnational of framework for the whole argument, so it wasn't like you used Western theories and Eastern texts, it's like the whole knowledge part is coming out of both places.
I currently teach in the English department at National Central University. I'm the chair and I teach writing classes, literature classes, and literary and cultural theory classes. Since my first visit to Taiwan in 1987, I think people are a little more comfortable talking to people from different places. In my personal interactions, I feel a difference, like a greater openness. Back then, there were so many interesting things happening here, all at one time, and that's the time that I happened to be here. And I made good friends in my personal life and in my intellectual life. And I think those are the things that made me come back: like if you feel that there's something interesting happening and there's some way that you can support it. I guess that's a way of feeling at home.” — Amie Parry

How long does it take to reach C1 (advanced) in a language you're learning? 💭
🤔Someone asked this on Twitter today and it got me thinking. I wonder why questions like these are so common. It's good to have a broad understanding of how long it might take, but there are way too many factors at play, making it impossible to have a single answer to this question.
📚If you're fluent in Dutch and learning Afrikaans, it might take you a few months or years, depending on the time you put in to learn and practice, to become fluent. The two languages are that similar.
🤠But if you're a native French speaker learning Korean, for instance, the two languages are very different in terms of grammar, pronunciation, sentence structure and even writing system. It would require hours and hours more effort than the above example.
🗻In another instance, 2 native English speakers could both start learning Japanese. Person A spends hours weekly studying, getting speaking practice in, listening and getting immersion down, and works hard. They could reach N3 (intermediate) level in a year and a half if they put in a ton of effort and if Japanese is all they focus on. Person B might even live in Japan, but if they don't put in the work and just rely on some weekly classes and barely do their homework, they might never even reach N5 (beginner) despite living in Japan. 🤔
As you can see, it's really impossible to ask these questions and have a cookie-cutter answer for each person and each language. Let's rather put time in to be immersed in languages rather than get stressed about how long the process might take. What do you all think? 💖🥳
why english is so hard to learn 在 Miura Haruma (三浦春馬 ) Facebook 的最佳解答
Thanks for the post that was sent to me by a fan. There is enough information here about what happened around Haruma Miura's death. Which is why fans want justice
JUSTICE FOR HARUMA :)
This is the summary of evidence revealed after the passing of Haruma
Haruma’s close friend went to his apt day after he was allegedly committed suicide / actually murdered...
His surfing rope was always stored in his car with his surfing board... however, that day his surfing board was casually placed next to his car in the garage ( which would be impossible as Haruma was a very neat person, he treasured very much his surfing board and all his accessories )!!!! Someone took the rope from his car and could care less if his surfing board was left outside unattended like that!!!! (That rope was used to strangle him to death... sad and angry!)
There’s no suicidal note... nothing!!!!!! And his body ( according to a nurse who had seen his body) said it had lots of bruises ... which was cremated the next day without a proper autopsy! ? (how could an autopsy being completed within 12 hours... the body then moved to his home town, and cremated which was amazingly efficient ! Why? Why the rush?)
His mom was not even present at the Funeral !!!!
( Why would they destroy the body so quickly ? Is it because they want to destroy the evidence that could prove he didn’t commit suicide but was murdered?)
Yes, Haruma had jotted down some sad and sentimental phases in his journal but it didn’t mean he had the inclination to commit suicide! Haruma loved reading about philosophy thoughts....he was filled with deep sensitive feelings towards life and people... he had a quest for the true meanings of life and culture which could be seen from his devotion in his Japan travel book he published this year!
In fact, Haruma still had a lot of projects in the coming year (2021)! He was in the middle of shooting the TV drama show “love come in the end of money” ... He was managing his own new drama play ‘Illusionist’ and would be on a tour commencing late 2020-2021. He was still very much engaged in his acting life.
He didn’t renew his contract with Amuse ... the day he was murdered was the last day of his contract! Haruma worried that the copy right of Kinki boots would be lost!!!
He refused to sign any contract with Amuse and wanted his own freedom back and made all his decisions from now on!
It was revealed that he had started to plan to leave the company two years ago... after his former manager was also claimed to have committed suicided several years ago (he jumped off a building or being thrown off the building?) Both Haruma and his former manager questioned how Amuse handed the funding raised from that AAA concert held annually!
Haruma worked very hard and had wanted to learn and achieved more as a man! he had grown lots of passions in his career being an actor as well!!!!
In the last few months of his life... he expressed concern of his own personal safety to his close friend that he felt unsafe and suspected he was followed and taped!
Please Haruma was a very Inspirational and hard-working person... he had lots of perseverance in overcoming any hardship! He planned to expand his talents after regaining his freedom by not renewing his contract with AMuse and started his company! He wanted to take control of his life!
Therefore, why would he commit Suicide the day he was free from any contract and actually could have started a new leaf in his life? it doesn’t make sense, does it?!
Amuse tried to smear Haruma’s image and reputation by saying he was depressed to cover up how they brutally murdered Haruma!! That’s why many fans like me were Serious and Furious about what had happened to Haruma... lots of the things said here were revealed in Japanese and wasn’t translated in English... we do respect Haruma!!!! but if his precious life was deprived like this... we want justice for him and to clear his name of him being committed Suicide!
Sorry if i have offended anyone... these are what people have reviewed or exposed ever since Haruma’s passing !!! we are all very desperate and feel so Furious why this had to happen to Haruma... a talented and Gorgeous person!
we love Haruma and miss him dearly... wish all this could be a nightmare which we could wake up tomorrow...and we had our Haruma back!!!!
God bless Haruma and the truth be revealed soon!
Could we have our Haruma back?

Lyrics
There was a little whale in the sea
Oh, he sunk in his own misery
there was this girl with no sympathy
Who left him washed ashore
He keeps getting hurt by someone else
Maybe, he must learn to stand up for himself.
Love is still love. But your love is a lie. You said goodbye without giving a chance. It’s hard even for a sailor to understand the adventure of this little whale
I haven’t perceived this before, that the one I adore makes me hurt
We weren’t getting along, were we?
Cause you kept ruining me with your words
Are you tired of being
hypocritical?
All the things that you say,
why are they so cruel?
Love is still love. But your love is a lie. You said goodbye without giving a chance. It’s hard even for a sailor to understand the adventure of this little whale
Love is still love. But your love is a lie. You said goodbye without giving a chance. It’s hard even for a sailor to understand the adventure of this little whale
