ถือว่าเป็นค่ายรถยนต์ ที่เป็นผู้นำในการพัฒนารถยนต์ไฟฟ้าค่ายหนึ่งของโลก มาตั้งแต่ต้น ล่าสุด BMW ได้ประกาศยืนยันแล้วว่า 5-Series และ X1 เจนเนอเรชั่นต่อไป จะมีรุ่นระบบขับเคลื่อนไฟฟ้า 100% เป็นทางเลือกที่เพิ่มเข้ามา นอกเหนือไปจากขุมพลังเบนซิน ดีเซล และไฮบริด ที่มีจำหน่ายในปัจจุบัน โดยโครงการนี้ เป็นผลมาจากนโยบายลดการปล่อยมลพิษ ให้ได้อย่างน้อย 1 ใน 3 ของอายุการใช้ยานยนต์ที่บริษัทจำหน่าย ภายในปี 2030 โดย BMW ตั้งเป้าหมายในการแนะนำรถยนต์ไฮบริดและไฟฟ้า ให้ได้อย่างน้อย 25 รุ่น ภายในปี 2023
BMW 5-Series และ X1 เจนเนอเรชั่นใหม่ ถือว่าเป็นรถยนต์รุ่นที่ต่อจาก 7-Series รุ่นปี 2022 ที่กำลังจะเป็นรถยนต์รุ่นแรกจาก BMW ที่จะมีขุมพลังให้เลือกถึง 4 ประเภทด้วยกัน และขุมพลังไฟฟ้า 100% ก็เป็นหนึ่งในนั้น โดยขุมพลังเบนซินและดีเซล ของรถยนต์ทั้ง 3 รุ่น จะมาพร้อมเทคโนโลยีมายด์ไฮบริด ขนาด 48 โวลท์ เพื่อให้บรรลุเป้าหมายด้านมลพิษที่ตั้งเอาไว้ โดยภายในปีหน้า คือปี 2021 BMW จะมีการเปิดตัวรถยนต์ไฟฟ้า ไม่น้อยกว่า 5 รุ่น ซึ่งได้แก่ รุ่น iX3, i4, iNext, Mini Cooper SE และ i3 ที่จะมาพร้อมกับการอัพเกรดระบบแบตเตอรี่
