「ホンダ・NS400R」を発売
本田技研工業(株)は、新設計の水冷・2サイクル・90度V型3気筒エンジン(総排気量・387cm3)を搭載し、フルフェアリングを標準装備した精悍なスタイルのロードスポーツバイク「ホンダ・NS400R」を5月10日より発売する。
このNS400Rは、83、84年度と、2年連続ロードレース世界GP500のメーカーチャンピオンを獲得した競争用二輪車「ホンダNS500」の最新技術の数々を投入して開発したものである。
エンジンは、クランクケース前方水平に2気筒、その後方に90度の角度をもって1気筒を配置した、軽量、スリムでコンパクト設計ホンダ・NS400V型 3気筒である。さらに耐焼付性、摩耗性にすぐれたアルミ一体成型シリンダーに、シリンダー内壁をニッケルとシリコン・カーバイドで特殊コーティング加工処理をしているNSシリンダーを採用したことにより、フリクションロス低減や耐久性向上を実現。また、前方2気筒に電気的にエンジン回転数を検知し、自動的に排気容積を変化させ、効果的な脈動効果が得られる自動調整トルク増幅排気機構(ATAC)や、さらにコンロッドに高速耐久性にすぐれたハイスピードステンレス製のニードルベアリングを採用。これらにより、低中速域で高いトルクを発生、しかも高回転域(最高出力59PS/8500rpm、最大トルク 5.1kg-m/8000rpm)までスムーズに回る扱い易いエンジン性能を実現させている。

Vツインマグナ(250cc)
マグナシリーズの250cc版である「Vツインマグナ」(V-TWIN MAGNA)は、1993年の東京モーターショーに登場し、翌年より販売が開始された。エンジンは同社のスポーツモデル「VT250F」系の水冷V型2気筒DOHC。これに空冷エンジン風の冷却フィンを追加して搭載。最高出力は中低速域での扱い易さを重視し、27psとなっている。低く構えた車体にロングシート、ティアドロップ形の燃料タンク、メガホンタイプのショートマフラーという250ccクラスだが、400ccクラスに劣らない車体の大きさと迫力のあるスタイルで、瞬く間に人気モデルとなった。
1996年にはフロントホイールをディッシュタイプに、またシート表皮のパターンを変更した限定モデル「S」が発売された他、全グレードにハザードランプが新設された。
ホンダの250ccで唯一のアメリカンバイクであるVツインマグナは、2007年9月の排ガス規制をもって生産終了が公示された。なお同じエンジンのVTR250も生産終了が公示されたため、絶版となる可能性が高い。
