#HannahEdApplyStory - Hành trình đến với đại học Yale của cô gái Hà Nội
Giữa tháng 12/2020, Nghiêm Quỳnh Du, học sinh lớp 12 Anh 1, trường THPT chuyên Hà Nội - Amsterdam, bận rộn ôn thi hết học kỳ I môn Văn, đồng thời hồi hộp chờ kết quả của Đại học Yale, Mỹ. Dù học khá muộn, Du vẫn không thể chợp mắt, trằn trọc đến gần 3h sáng mới ngủ thiếp đi, máy tính vẫn để cạnh giường.
Thông báo từ Đại học Yale lúc 5h sáng (giờ Việt Nam) khiến Du bừng tỉnh. Nhìn thấy dòng chữ "Congratulations" (Chúc mừng bạn), Du vỡ òa hạnh phúc. "Với em, giành học bổng của Yale là cơ hội chỉ đến lần duy nhất trong đời. Kết quả này khiến em rất hạnh phúc và là phần thưởng xứng đáng với những nỗ lực em đã bỏ ra", cô gái 18 tuổi chia sẻ.
Theo US News and World Report, Đại học Yale đứng thứ 4 nước Mỹ, thứ 8 thế giới theo Times Higher Education, thuộc nhóm Ivy League danh giá. Học bổng của Quỳnh Du gồm học phí, sinh hoạt phí và các chi phí khác, trị giá gần 77.000 USD/năm (khoảng 7 tỷ đồng cho bốn năm học).
Sinh ra và lớn lên trong một gia đình Hà Nội gốc, Quỳnh Du biết vẽ trước khi biết đọc. Em thích thú chơi với sắc màu dù chưa biết gọi tên từng màu. Nhận thấy khả năng của Du, bố mẹ cho em học thêm vẽ bên cạnh chương trình chính khóa trên lớp. Dấu ấn đầu tiên của Du trong hội họa là bức tranh "Bàn làm việc của bố" vẽ khi 5 tuổi, được chọn để dựng trên "Con đường gốm sứ".
Ban đầu, Du chỉ nghĩ vẽ là cách thể hiện cảm xúc của bản thân, nhưng trong quá trình học, em thấy mình có thể làm nhiều hơn với hình khối và màu sắc. Cảm nhận về hội họa của Du thay đổi lúc vào lớp 6. Khi đó, thầy giáo cho cả lớp xem nhiều bức vẽ phong cảnh, dựa trên hình ảnh thật của các địa danh trong nước. Cô bé 12 tuổi nhận ra thông qua các bức tranh, em còn thể hiện được tình yêu quê hương, đất nước.
Khi tiếp xúc với các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng và tham gia nhiều hoạt động xã hội, Quỳnh Du ấn tượng mạnh mẽ với các vấn đề thời sự liên quan đến vai trò, quyền lợi của phụ nữ và trẻ em trong cuộc sống. Cuối tháng 10/2020, Quỳnh Du đã có một triển lãm tranh của riêng mình với hơn 30 bức, trong đó đa số nói về thân phận phụ nữ trong xã hội hiện đại. "Em mong những bức tranh không chỉ nói về một mình em nữa mà còn giúp thể hiện vấn đề của nhiều người khác, trở thành công cụ truyền thông nhắc đến các sự kiện xã hội", Du chia sẻ.
Khi quan tâm hơn đến các vấn đề xã hội và định hình phong cách hội họa, Quỳnh Du bắt đầu tìm hiểu về du học Mỹ, nơi hội tụ và giao thoa của nhiều nền văn hóa. Bày tỏ với bố mẹ, Du nhận được sự ủng hộ và tạo điều kiện. Sau khi tốt nghiệp hệ THCS của trường THPT chuyên Hà Nội - Amsterdam, Du tiếp tục học cấp 3 tại ngôi trường này.
Trong hai năm đầu bậc THPT, nữ sinh đầu tư thời gian hoàn thành các chứng chỉ ngoại ngữ, đạt 1520/1600 SAT I, 790/800 Toán, 800/800 Hóa SAT II và 8.0 IELTS. "Em chưa hài lòng với điểm SAT I vì biết mình có thể làm tốt hơn. Dù đã hai lần đăng ký thi lại trong năm nay, em vẫn không có cơ hội tham dự để cải thiện điểm SAT vì Covid-19 khiến các địa điểm tổ chức thi giới hạn số người tham gia", Du kể.
Trước khi chọn đại học để nộp hồ sơ, Du dành thời gian tìm hiểu về lịch sử hình thành và triết lý giáo dục của từng trường. Cô gái sinh năm 2003 ấn tượng với tinh thần không ngại đấu tranh của Đại học Yale cho nữ quyền và cộng đồng thông qua cuộc biểu tình năm 1976. Điều này phù hợp với lĩnh vực Du quan tâm là phụ nữ, trẻ em và cách đóng góp, phát triển cộng đồng. Ngoài ra, Du còn hứng khởi khi Đại học Yale có bảo tàng mỹ thuật lớn, phù hợp với người yêu thích hội họa như em. Cô gái Hà Nội quyết tâm "liều" nộp duy nhất một hồ sơ vào Đại học Yale trong kỳ tuyển sinh sớm của Mỹ.
Quỳnh Du cho rằng điểm sáng nhất trong bộ hồ sơ xin học bổng từ Đại học Yale của mình là bài luận chính. Em bắt đầu viết luận khá muộn, chỉ 5 tháng trước ngày hết hạn tuyển sinh sớm của Yale. Nữ sinh được một người bạn của bố giúp đỡ, góp ý trong quá trình chuẩn bị hồ sơ. Sau nhiều lần bị phê bình nghiêm khắc về cách viết luận, Du đã vài lần rơi nước mắt vì lo lắng.
Cùng thời điểm đó, nữ sinh phải ôn tập cho các bài kiểm tra trên lớp. Việc chỉ nộp hồ sơ vào một trường duy nhất, lại bắt đầu viết luận chậm hơn các bạn, đồng thời đặt mục tiêu duy trì kết quả tốt tại trường khiến Du gặp áp lực và căng thẳng. Em bị mất ngủ, đảo lộn giờ giấc sinh hoạt khi thường xuyên thức đến 2-3h sáng, chỉ ngủ khoảng 3 tiếng mỗi ngày.
Sau khi viết đến 9 bản với ý tưởng khác nhau, mỗi bản sửa 2-3 lần, Quỳnh Du hoàn thành bài luận chính vào cuối tháng 10, chỉ vài ngày trước thời điểm hết hạn nhận hồ sơ. Trong bài viết, Du tưởng tượng mình là cậu bé trong bức ảnh của nhiếp ảnh gia người Đức Thomas Billhardt chụp tại Hà Nội năm 1968. Cậu bé đó ngồi giữa đống đổ nát, vẽ lại cầu Doumer, nay là cầu Long Biên, hoang tàn sau chiến tranh.
Với Du, vì sinh ra và lớn lên tại Hà Nội, em đặc biệt ấn tượng với cầu Long Biên thông qua lời kể của ông bà, bố mẹ. Cầu Long Biên như một chứng nhân lịch sử, đã cùng người Hà Nội trải qua nhiều thăng trầm. Việc thể hiện chân thực cầu Long Biên bị tàn phá như nào sau trận chiến cũng như phân tích tác động của mỹ thuật cổ động lên cuộc sống của người Hà Nội giúp Du truyền đạt thông điệp - mọi sự đúng sai, phải trái trong xã hội cần có cái nhìn chân thực nhất. "Em cho rằng dù ngôn từ hay hội họa, những thứ vốn được biết đến với sự đẹp đẽ và bóng bẩy, vẫn cần nói lên sự thật, không được che phủ cái xấu. Em muốn đưa sự thật đó ra ánh sáng để mọi người cùng chiêm nghiệm với mình", Du nói.
Hồ sơ gửi đến Yale của Quỳnh Du còn gây ấn tượng với nhiều hoạt động xã hội trong và ngoài trường khi là phó trưởng ban tổ chức Scribbles Project, trưởng ban truyền thông của CLB Ams Writers’ Guild, dự án Ams’ Got Talent, IVMUN (hội nghị mô phỏng Liên Hợp Quốc)... Nhờ việc sớm xác định được vấn đề mình quan tâm, các hoạt động mà nữ sinh tham gia thường hướng đến giúp đỡ phụ nữ, trẻ em nghèo thông qua việc gây quỹ, làm từ thiện. Em cũng "bỏ túi" nhiều giải thưởng tại các lĩnh vực, xuyên suốt 12 năm học như: giải nhất thi tin học trẻ thành phố (lớp 4), giải nhì Toán quốc gia (lớp 5), nhì Lịch sử quận và thành phố (lớp 😎, nhì tiếng Anh thành phố (lớp 9 đến 12)...
Như cách Quỳnh Du hóm hỉnh dùng từ "liều ăn nhiều", bộ hồ sơ duy nhất em nộp trong kỳ tuyển sinh sớm của Mỹ đã giành được suất học bổng trị giá hơn 300.000 USD trong bốn năm từ Đại học Yale. Trong thư giới thiệu viết về Du, cô Lê Thu Thủy, giáo viên chủ nhiệm lớp 12 Anh 1, trường THPT chuyên Hà Nội - Amsterdam, bày tỏ sự ấn tượng với khả năng hội họa nổi trội, phông kiến thức sâu rộng và sự tự tin, không ngần ngại nói lên quan điểm của học trò.
Cô Đỗ Tú Oanh, giáo viên dạy Văn, đánh giá Quỳnh Du có tài năng ngôn ngữ bẩm sinh cùng lối viết sinh động. "Tôi được đọc một số tác phẩm do chính Du viết và cảm thấy trân trọng nỗ lực của em trong việc sử dụng giọng văn độc đáo, súc tích để lên tiếng về các vấn đề xã hội", cô Oanh nhận xét.
Tháng 8/2021, Quỳnh Du sẽ nhập học Đại học Yale. Thời gian tới, Du tiếp tục hoàn thành việc học tại trường, đặt mục tiêu tốt nghiệp với kết quả cao. Em vẫn tham gia các dự án vì cộng đồng và tranh thủ học thử các bài giảng miễn phí do Đại học Yale đăng tải, tham gia một vài khóa viết luận để không bỡ ngỡ khi trở thành tân sinh viên. Do Covid-19 còn phức tạp, Du và gia đình cũng xây dựng vài "kế hoạch B" để đảm bảo sức khỏe và không bị lỡ cơ hội học tập tại đại học hàng đầu thế giới.
Du khẳng định việc giành học bổng của Đại học Yale vô cùng ý nghĩa trong cuộc đời em. Nếu không nhờ gia đình, các thầy cô và cố vấn cho bài luận chính, hành trình đến với Yale của nữ sinh sẽ khó khăn hơn rất nhiều. "Tuy nhiên, em nghĩ lựa chọn và trúng tuyển trường nào không quan trọng bằng việc cố gắng ra sao. Xác định được điều mình thích và thấy phù hợp, từ đó nỗ lực để đạt được mục tiêu là điều ý nghĩa nhất", Du nói.

เปิดประเด็นข้อเท็จจริง “จริงหรือไม่? อเมริกาและประเทศพันธมิตร ไม่อนุญาตให้คนจีนไปเรียนอีกต่อไป"

จริงๆมีคนถามมาตั้งแต่เมื่อวันก่อน และตอบไปในข้อความส่วนตัวแล้ว ถึงกรณีมีการโพสต์เนื้อหาบนโลกโซเชียลว่า "อเมริกา และหลายประเทศในยุโรปแบนนักศึกษาจีน" เลยอยากเขียนถึงเรื่องนี้สักหน่อย เผื่อเป็นข้อมูลสำหรับทุกคนในพิจารณาข้อเท็จจริงครับ

1. อเมริกาไม่ได้ "ห้าม" หรือ "ไม่อนุญาต" นักศึกษาจีนเข้าไปเรียนที่อเมริกาอีกต่อไป เหมือนกับที่มีการเขียนโพสต์ออกมาและแชร์ไปเป็นจำนวนมากก่อนหน้านี้ ยังคงมีนักศึกษาจีนได้รับการตอบรับเพื่อเข้าเรียนในอเมริกา และเริ่มเดินทางไปยังอเมริกาแล้วโดยเฉพาะเดือนสิงหาคมนี้ หลังจากอเมริกาผ่อนคลายมาตรการเข้มงวดในการขอวีซ่าและเดินทางเข้าอเมริกา โดยอนุญาตให้นักเรียนจีนเดินทางเข้าอเมริกาได้ สำหรับโปรแกรมการศึกษาที่จะเริ่มต้นขึ้นตั้งแต่ 1 สิงหาคม 2021 เป็นต้นไป มีเงื่อนไข “เดินทางเข้าอเมริกาล่วงหน้า ไม่เกิน 30 วัน ของเวลาเปิดเทอม - เริ่มคอร์ส”

แต่ต้องยอมรับว่า "มีข้อจำกัดมากขึ้นจากหลายปัจจัย เช่น จากวิกฤติโควิด ค่าตั๋วค่าเดินทางแพงขึ้น ตามข้อมูลจาก SCMP (South Morning China Post) สื่อเอกชนที่รายงานเรื่องจีน นำเสนอสกู๊ป "The high price Chinese students pay for university in the US during the Covid-19 pandemic" เผยแพร่ 21 สิงหาคม 2564 ระบุ "ค่าตั๋วเครื่องบินจากจีนเข้าอเมริกา ราคาสูงมากทีเดียว ตัวอย่างเช่น ตั๋วเที่ยวเดียวจากปักกิ่งหรือเซี่ยงไฮ้ ไปยังปลายทางมหานครนิวยอร์ก บอสตัน หรือเมืองใหญ่อีกหลายเมืองในอเมริกา ต้องจ่ายเงินสูงถึงราว 20,000 หยวน ( ประมาณ 1 แสนบาท)"

2. เรื่องของการเมือง มีผลกระทบจริงต่อการเรียนต่อในอเมริกาของนักเรียนนักศึกษาจีน แต่ยังสามารถไปได้อยู่ ไม่ใช่ ห้าม 100% ดังที่กล่าวไปแล้วข้างต้น โดยในบทความของ SCMP (ที่อ้างอิงข้างบน) ยังระบุคำสัมภาษณ์นักศึกษาจีน
“ความสัมพันธ์ของสองประเทศยังคงมีปัญหา และกระแสชาตินิยมในจีนยิ่งสูงขึ้นเรื่อยๆ การตัดสินใจเรียนต่อในอเมริกาไมใช่เรื่องง่ายเลย แต่หวังว่าจะคุ้มค่ากับเงินและอุปสรรคปัญหาต่างๆที่เจอ”

3. ตั้งแต่ช่วงสงครามการค้าจีนอเมริกาอย่างหนักเมื่อช่วงปี 2019 อเมริกาได้ประกาศแบนหลายสินค้าและบริษัทของจีน อย่างเช่น Huawei ซึ่งไม่เว้นแม้แต่สถาบันการศึกษาและสถาบันวิจัยในจีนที่โดนแบนไปทั้งหมด 6 แห่ง (รวมถึงมหาวิทยาลัยที่อ้ายจงเรียนจบมา) โดยล้วนเกี่ยวข้องกับสายเทคโนโลยีและวิศวกรรมของจีน มีชื่ออยู่ในบทความของสื่อจีน South China Morning Post เมื่อปี2015 ว่า เป็น TOP5 มหาวิทยาลัยจีนที่ทำโปรเจคลับและสำคัญสุดๆให้แก่จีน

ในฐานะที่เป็นศิษย์เก่าสถาบันที่มีอยู่ในรายชื่อแบนของอเมริกา ผมจึงสอบถามไปยังเพื่อนคนจีนที่ทำงานเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่ในมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนั้น โดยรับคำตอบว่า “เคยมีเหมือนกันที่อาจารย์ เจ้าหน้าที่ นักศึกษาปัจจุบัน และศิษย์เก่า รู้สึกว่า “ขอวีซ่าเข้าอเมริกายากขึ้นจริง”

4. ปี 2020 อเมริกาประกาศ “แบนและยกเลิกวีซ่านักศึกษาแก่นักศึกษาจีน” อย่างน้อย 2 รอบ สืบเนื่องมาตั้งแต่ความขัดแย้งทางการค้าในสงครามการค้าสองประเทศ โดยเหตุผลที่ยกเลิกวีซ่า อเมริกายกเหตุผล “นักศึกษาจีนเหล่านี้ มีความเกี่ยวข้องกับทางการทหารจีน และขโมยข้อมูลสำคัญของทางอเมริกาไปให้แก่ทางจีน” คาดว่ามีนักศึกษาจีนได้รับผลกระทบอย่างน้อย 3,000 – 5,000 คน จากจำนวนนักศึกษาจีนทั้งหมดที่เรียนในอเมริกาช่วงปีการศึกษา 2019-2020 372,000 คน คิดเป็นสัดส่วน 1 ใน 3 ของนักศึกษาต่างชาติหลักล้านคนในอเมริกา (อ้างอิงตัวเลขจาก China Daily สื่อจีน)

มีนักศึกษาจีนบางคนที่โดนแบนให้สัมภาษณ์กับสื่อ อย่างเช่น นักศึกษาหนุ่มจีนนาม “Dennis Hu” ให้สัมภาษณ์ต่อ CNN ว่า “เดินทางกลับจากอเมริกาไปยังบ้านในประเทศจีน เพื่อฉลองตรุษจีน (ช่วงจีนเกิดระบาดโควิด) และจะกลับไปต่อวีซ่าอเมริกา เพื่อกลับไปทำปริญญาเอกทางด้านวิทยาศาสตร์คอมพิวเตอร์ให้จบ แต่ปรากฏว่าเขาเป็น 1 ในนักศึกษาจีนนับพันคนที่โดนแบนวีซ่า ไม่ให้กลับไปศึกษาต่อในอเมริกา และแน่นอนว่า เขาก็เหมือนกับทุกคนที่โดนแบน ยืนยัน ไม่ได้เกี่ยวข้องใดๆหรือเป็นสายลับให้กับรัฐบาลจีน”

5. เรื่องราวของความขัดแย้งทางการค้าและการเมือง ส่งผลกระทบต่อการไปเรียนอเมริกาของคนจีนมาสักพักใหญ่ๆแล้ว แต่ไม่ได้เป็นการแบนแบบหว่านแห ทุกมหาวิทยาลัย ทุกคน
“เหตุผลหลักๆมาจากประเด็นความปลอดภัยและความมั่นคงของประเทศ การเกรงกลัวว่าข้อมูลสำคัญจะหลุดรั่วไหลไปยังรัฐบาลจีนและกองทัพจีน ผ่านทางนักเรียนนักศึกษาและนักวิจัยจีน โดยเฉพาะทางสายวิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี วิศวกรรมศาสตร์ และคณิตศาสตร์ หรือเรียกรวมว่า STEM

บทความบนเว็บไซต์ Global Times สื่อกระบอกเสียงจีน ที่เผยแพร่เมื่อกรกฎาคมปีนี้ (2021) รายงานข้อมูล “ปัจจุบัน อเมริกาปฏิเสธวีซ่าแก่นักเรียนจีนที่ตั้งใจจะไปเรียนทางสาย STEM (วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี วิศวกรรมศาสตร์ และคณิตศาสตร์) มากกว่า 500 คน”

6. อีกหนึ่งบทความบนเว็บไซต์ Global Times เมื่อพฤษภาคม 2021 Global Times รายงานข้อมูลจาก Gewai Education บริษัทแนะแนวศึกษาต่ออเมริกา ซึ่งเผยข้อมูลการขอวีซ่าอเมริกาของนักเรียนจีนจำนวนหนึ่งโดนปฏิเสธ เพราะพ่อแม่ผู้ปกครองทำงานเป็นเจ้าหน้าที่ระดับสูงอยู่ในหน่วยงานเกี่ยวข้องกับความปลอดภัยและความมั่นคงของประเทศจีน รวมถึง หน่วยงานปราบปรามคอรัปชั่นและตรวจคนเข้าเมือง

7. จากมาตรการของประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เข้มงวดเรื่องวีซ่าแก่นักเรียนนักศึกษาจีน รวมถึงนักวิจัยจีน ด้วยเหตุผลเรื่องความปลอดภัยและความมั่นคง เคยมีการนำเสนอข่าวออกมาโดยสื่อต่างประเทศเหมือนกันว่า ประเทศพันธมิตรของอเมริกาบางประเทศ มีการดำเนินนโยบายคล้ายๆกันนี้ อย่างเช่น ญี่ปุ่น ตามการรายงานข่าวของ The Straits Times

และ แคนาดา ก็เคยมีการเรียกร้องให้มหาวิทยาลัยแคนาดา ระมัดระวังการทำวิจัยร่วมกับมหาวิทยาลัยและสถาบันวิจัยจีน เพราะข้อมูลอาจรั่วไหลไปถึงรัฐบาลจีน อย่างยิ่งทางการทหารจีน เป็นความวิตกกังวลและกลัวในประเด็นเดียวกันกับที่อเมริกาให้เหตุผลแบนวีซ่านักเรียนนักศึกษาและนักวิจัยจีน (ตามการรายงานของ CBC สื่อแคนาดา)

8. จีนตอบโต้นโยบายเข้มงวดแก่นักศึกษาจีนของอเมริกามาโดยตลอด ตั้งแต่ปี 2019 สงครามการค้าจีนอเมริกา รัฐบาลจีนออกประกาศเตือนประชาชนถึงการไปเรียนต่อและเที่ยวที่ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาให้ระมัดระวังในเรื่ิองของการขอวีซ่าที่มีข้อจำกัดมากขึ้น ให้ระยะเวลาอยู่ในอเมริกาลดน้อยลงกว่าที่ควรจะเป็น โดยเฉพาะส่งผลโดยตรงต่อนักศึกษาจีนที่ต้องการไปเรียนต่อที่อเมริกา

9. ไม่ใช่อเมริกา “เพิ่มข้อจำกัดในการขอวีซ่าแก่ชาวจีน เพียงอย่างเดียว” ประเทศจีนเองก็เข้มงวดแก่ชาวอเมริกา อย่างเช่นเมื่อช่วงเดือนมิถุนายน 2020 ทางการจีน ออกมาตรการ ‘เพิ่มข้อจำกัดในการออกวีซ่าแก่ชาวอเมริกัน ที่มีพฤติกรรมเชิงลบต่อเรื่องราวของจีนและฮ่องกง โดยในปี 2020 เป็นปีที่อเมริกายกเลิกวีซ่านักเรียนจีนหลักพันคน ตามการวิเคราะห์ของผู้เชี่ยวชาญและสื่อต่างประเทศ อาทิ ABC News และ Wall Street Journal มองว่า “เบื้องลึกไม่ใช่ประเด็นความมั่นคงอย่างเดียว แต่เป็นการต่อต้านการออกกฎหมายความมั่นคงแห่งชาติที่จีนนำไปใช้กับฮ่องกง”

10. การแก้ไขปัญหาสมองไหล-หัวกะทิ-ประชาชนผู้มีความสามารถไปใช้ชีวิตอยู่ต่างประเทศ อย่างยิ่งในอเมริกา ให้กลับมายังประเทศจีน มีส่วนมาผลจากความขัดแย้งทางการเมืองและปัญหาทางการค้าจีนอเมริกา ทำให้คนจีนในอเมริกาเรียนจบ หรือทำงานในอเมริกาอยู่แล้ว ย้ายกลับจีนมากขึ้น แต่ไม่ใช่เหตุผลทั้งหมด เพราะจีนดำเนินนโยบายดึงดูดคนจีนเก่งๆให้กลับมาประเทศจีน ตั้งแต่ก่อนเกิดสงครามการค้าจีนอเมริกาและการขัดแย้งทางการเมืองอย่างหนัก

จากประสบการณ์จริงของอ้ายจง สมัยไปทำวิจัยที่เมืองซีอานปี 2014 ตอนนั้นที่แลปดีลกับมหาวิทยาลัยในอเมริกาและยุโรปเยอะมากในด้านทำการวิจัย

#สรุป อเมริกาและประเทศอื่นๆ โดยเฉพาะประเทศพันธมิตรของอเมริกา มีข้อจำกัดในการให้วีซ่าแก่ประชาชนชาวจีนจริง ในการเข้าศึกษาต่อและทำวิจัย แต่ขอเน้นย้ำว่า “ไม่ใช่การจำกัด หรือแบนแบบ 100%“ และจากตัวเลขตามที่มีรายงานออกมาจากสื่อต่างประเทศและสื่อจีนเอง จำนวนนักศึกษาจีนที่ได้รับผลกระทบ เอาแค่ในประเทศอเมริกา เป็นจำนวน “หลักพัน” จากทั้งหมด 3 แสนกว่าคนที่ศึกษาในอเมริกา ดังนั้น ไม่ใช่สัดส่วน 80% ที่โดนแบนและไล่กลับจีนแบบที่มีการแชร์ก่อนหน้านี้

โดยเหตุผลหลักของการแบนและจำกัดวีซ่าแก่คนจีน มาจากเหตุผล “ความมั่นคงและข้อขัดแย้งทางการเมือง” เน้นหนักไปที่การเกรงกลัวข้อมูลสำคัญหลุดไปยังรัฐบาลและทางกองทัพจีน ซึ่งสาขาการเรียนและการวิจัยที่โดนจับตามองเป็นพิเศษ ได้แก่ สาขาสาย STEM - วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี วิศวกรรมศาสตร์ และคณิตศาสตร์

#HannahEdApplyStory - Trúng tuyển trường top đầu Mỹ nhờ hai quyết định táo bạo
Không nộp SAT, thay bài luận đầu tư ba tháng thành tác phẩm viết trong 20 ngày, Hải Dương chưa từng nghĩ sẽ giành học bổng 7 tỷ đồng.
Sau khi hoàn thành bài tập ôn thi tốt nghiệp THPT, Hà Hải Dương, 18 tuổi, trường THPT chuyên Khoa học Tự nhiên (Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên, Đại học Quốc gia Hà Nội) mở laptop. Trong căn phòng chừng 20 m2 treo đầy poster, sách báo về Hóa học và các môn khoa học tự nhiên, Dương chăm chú theo dõi câu lạc bộ Hóa học, Tranh biện của Đại học Georgetown, Mỹ, đồng thời hoàn thiện đơn ứng tuyển vào ban biên tập Tạp chí Khoa học của trường. "Em muốn chuẩn bị hành trang tốt nhất trước khi đến Mỹ vào tháng 9", Dương nói.
Trong đợt tuyển sinh của đại học Mỹ, Dương được Đại học Georgetown (top 23 tại Mỹ) cấp học bổng 295.000 USD (gần 7 tỷ đồng) trong bốn năm, gồm học phí, tiền sinh hoạt, bảo hiểm, vé máy bay và quần áo mùa đông. Ngoài ra, chàng trai dáng người mảnh khảnh còn trúng tuyển trường Hóa học của Đại học California tại Berkeley, Đại học California tại Los Angeles. Theo Times Higher Education, hai trường này lần lượt đứng thứ 7 và 15 trong top đại học tốt nhất thế giới 2021. Nếu xét riêng trường Hóa của Đại học California tại Berkeley, đây là trường số 1 thế giới về đào tạo hóa học, theo US News and World report.
Hải Dương tự nhận không phải là học sinh xuất sắc, quá nổi trội hay bộc lộ thiên hướng học tự nhiên từ nhỏ. Mẹ hay đau ốm nên gia đình kỳ vọng Dương trở thành bác sĩ và hai chữ "du học" chưa từng xuất hiện trong kế hoạch tương lai của em. "Em nghĩ sẽ thi Đại học Y Hà Nội và trở thành bác sĩ như định hướng gia đình", Dương nhớ lại.
Những năm cấp hai học THCS Nguyễn Tất Thành, nam sinh bắt đầu hứng thú với các môn khoa học tự nhiên. Lần đầu tiên, Dương đặt câu hỏi "Tại sao mọi người thường ủ phân bằng rác thải, trong khi bã cà phê cũng có thể làm điều tương tự mà không được tận dụng hợp lý?".
Chàng trai Hà Nội bắt đầu đi tìm lời giải bằng cách xin lại bã cà phê của những quán gần trường, tìm cách trung hòa độ pH để phù hợp với từng loại cây. Sau một năm rưỡi tự mày mò, dự án của Dương được giáo viên và trường tạo điều kiện, cử sang Singapore tham gia cuộc thi khoa học kỹ thuật. Tại sân chơi này, em được gặp gỡ bạn bè, biết thêm nhiều kiến thức mới và có thêm động lực để tham dự nhiều hội thảo khoa học hơn.
Đầu năm lớp 11, sau thời gian dài tham gia hoạt động ngoại khóa, được tiếp cận với bạn bè nhiều nơi, Dương bị thuyết phục bởi quan điểm cần du học để mở mang và học thêm nhiều điều mới trong lĩnh vực Hóa - Sinh. "Em thích giáo dục khai phóng tại Mỹ, nơi em nghĩ có thể học những môn khác biệt, thỏa sức khám phá và kết nối với những người cùng đam mê", Dương nói.
Nghe con trai chia sẻ mong muốn, bố mẹ Dương không phản đối nhưng dặn "cần tìm nguồn hỗ trợ tài chính". Hiểu gia đình không thể đóng góp nhiều, nam sinh đặt mục tiêu săn học bổng từ mọi trường. "Vì Covid-19 nên các đại học Mỹ thắt chặt hỗ trợ tài chính hơn so với các năm trước. Lúc đưa ra quyết định du học, em hiểu mình sẽ phải đối mặt với hành trình hết sức khó khăn", Dương kể.
Chỉ có một năm chuẩn bị, Dương sắp xếp thời gian học SAT song song với lịch học chính khóa trên trường. Mỗi tuần, em dành ba buổi tối để làm đề SAT trong ba tiếng, sau đó thêm 1-2 tiếng để xem lại bài làm. Trong thời gian ôn luyện, Dương không cầm điện thoại hay bị xao nhãng, xác định phải tập trung tối đa.
Tuy vậy, kết quả SAT của Dương không cao như kỳ vọng. Vì Covid-19, hàng loạt kỳ thi chứng chỉ quốc tế bị hủy, các đại học Mỹ bỏ yêu cầu bắt buộc về điểm SAT. Sau nhiều ngày đắn đo, Dương quyết định không nộp SAT cùng hồ sơ du học. "Em nghĩ điểm số đó không phải là minh chứng cho khả năng học tập, lãnh đạo và đóng góp của mình. Nếu cố nộp, hồ sơ của em có thể bị đánh giá thấp hơn so với các bạn có điểm SAT cao hơn", Dương nói.
Nam sinh tiếp tục đưa ra một quyết định liều lĩnh khác - bỏ bài luận viết trong ba tháng nghỉ hè, thay bằng một bài khác được hoàn thành trong ba tuần cuối cùng. Dương giải thích, bài luận viết trong dịp nghỉ hè chủ yếu kể về những thành tích em đạt được, niềm say mê khoa học và em thấy hội động tuyển sinh có thể tìm được một bài na ná như này ở bất cứ đâu. Hơn nữa, những thành tích đó đã được Dương thể hiện bằng các chứng nhận gửi kèm hồ sơ.
