The Queen's Gambit creator on 'bringing sexy back to chess' and the series' long journey to TV

♟It's taken almost 40 years for Netflix’s limited series The Queen's Gambit to wind its way to the screen. The story was first published as a novel by Walter Tevis in 1983. The film rights were quickly scooped up, but the project languished in development hell for decades. Heath Ledger was preparing to direct an adaptation at the time of his death. But for the last decade or so, it’s been the passion project of writer-director Scott Frank.

網飛迷你影集《后翼棄兵》花了近40年才蜿蜒登上銀幕，故事原是1983年出版、由華特戴維斯編寫的小說。電影改編權很快就被搶走，但案子卻在「開發地獄」裡熬了幾十年，希斯萊傑去世前正在準備執導改編電影版，而過去十年來則是編導史考特法蘭克傾注熱情的專案。

✍️ development hell: 電影從提案到開拍前，劇本可能在開發過程中經過無數次的修改，不斷打掉重練，甚至花上數十年時間、經手無數名編劇和導演，因此這段過程被業界人士稱為「開發地獄」

🍾“The very first script I ever wrote was about the cost of genius, and I didn't quite get there with it,” says Frank, who wrote and directed every episode of The Queen’s Gambit. “I was too young, and I didn't quite understand what I was writing about. And when I read [The Queen’s Gambit] I thought, ‘This is a much better way to tell that story.’ This notion that she's both the protagonist and antagonist in her story, I thought, was really, really interesting, and chess was actually the perfect vehicle to tell this, [with] a chess genius.”

編寫且執導了每一集《后翼棄兵》的法蘭克說：「我寫的第一個劇本是關於身為天才的代價，但沒有很到位。我當時太年輕，不太懂自己在寫什麼。我讀到《后翼棄兵》時想說『這是講那個故事的更好方式。』她在她的故事中既是主角又是反派，我覺得這個概念非常、非常有趣，而西洋棋正是講這個故事的完美載體，關於一位西洋棋天才。」
