David Lee played with a heavy heart. He was still right there when the New York Knicks needed him at the end.
Lee scored 24 points and hit the game-winning layup with 13.3 seconds remaining, one day after the death of his grandfather, and the New York Knicks salvaged the finale of a three-game trip with a 93-92 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.
Lee started for New York despite the death of his grandfather, E. Desmond Lee, who was 92 when he passed away on Tuesday night. Lee considered skipping this game but changed his mind.
"I made the decision to stay here rather than going to St. Louis because I wanted to fill that role as team captain and leader of this team," said Lee, who added nine rebounds. "It was a quality win for us. I didn't have the best energy, but it was enough."
Wilson Chandler added 18 points, Al Harrington scored 17, Jared Jeffries had 15 and Danilo Gallinari 12 for the Knicks (16-22), who snapped a two-game losing streak. The Knicks also ended a nine-game skid in Philadelphia, dating to Dec. 17, 2004.
"We finally got one here," Jeffries said. "We made some big plays when we needed them down the stretch."
Allen Iverson scored 16 points, Rodney Carney added 13 and Samuel Dalembert had 12 and a season-high 21 rebounds for the Sixers (12-26), who had won two straight and their previous six meetings with New York.
Dalembert played with an even heavier heart in the aftermath of Tuesday's earthquake which devastated his home country of Haiti and left thousands dead. Dalembert, who was born in Port-au-Prince in 1980 and lived there until he was 14 before moving to Montreal, was still trying to gather information on family members still living in Haiti before Wednesday's game.
While his father and one sister had contacted him, a number of other relatives and friends were still unaccounted for as he prepared to play.
"It was a relief and I can say that," Dalembert said. "When the game started, I was able to keep my mind on the game. It kind of helped me out for two hours."
Before Fridays game against Sacramento, Dalembert will continue to monitor the situation and assist in fundraising efforts.
"We should be announcing something in the next couple of days," Dalembert said.
Thaddeus Young also chipped in with 11 points for the Sixers, and Marreese Speights had 10 in the final 8:40, his only playing time all night.
A driving layup by Speights gave the Sixers a 90-86 lead with 1:30 remaining. But Chandler responded with a three-point play, and Lee hit a baseline jumper from 12 feet to push the Knicks ahead 91-90 with 43.4 seconds left.
After Speights knocked in a difficult layup off the glass, Lee provided the game-winner with a layup on an assist from Chris Duhon.
"We got a really shot on that possession," said Duhon, who had seven assists. "It was a great road win for us. We had lost a couple in a row and it feels really good to get this one, especially the way we got it."
Carney missed a 3-pointer as time expired.
"He got a good look," Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said of the last shot.
The Knicks hit nine of their first 10 shots but eventually cooled off, trailing 48-47 at halftime.
Dalembert had 10 points and 11 rebounds in the first half alone for the 76ers.

"It's going to have to be one of the best games ever from us in order to win," Allen Iverson said.
They sure didn't play one against Detroit.
Rodney Stuckey scored 27 points and hit the winner with 8.7 seconds left to lead the injury-plagued Pistons to a 90-86 win over Philadelphia on Wednesday night, the 76ers' 11th straight loss.
New Jersey and Minnesota are the only teams with worse records than the Sixers. The Sixers haven't won since Nov. 18 vs. Charlotte and they've lost by five or less points six times during the skid.
Stuckey had the ball stripped by Andre Iguodala, but he grabbed the loose ball and tossed it in for the go-ahead basket with 1 second left on the shot clock.
Iguodala went for the win, but his open 3-point attempt was no good. He scored 18 points.
Pistons coach John Kuester said Stuckey was the right player to take the shot.
"No question I want the ball in his hands," he said. "You saw a lot of growth in a young man. I've been telling people about how good he can be. He can be one of the best guards in the league and he showed it tonight."
Iverson, once the best guard in the league, scored 11 points in his second game with the Sixers. He hit the tying jumper with 1:06 left that made it 86-all.
Iverson is 0-5 this season -- three losses with Memphis; two with the 76ers. Iverson missed seven of 10 shots from the floor and had three assists.
"It's going to get better," Iverson said. "This is one of these times when you find out what type of character you have as men."
The Pistons won without their top three stars. Guard Ben Gordon sat out with a sprained left ankle, and they had been playing without Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Tayshaun Prince (back).
"Without three of our best players to get a win on the road like this is always a good thing. It will help build confidence," Pistons center Kwame Brown said.
Stuckey and Jonas Jerebko were sensational in the fourth quarter and rallied against a struggling Sixers team looking for a break.
Jerebko made all three baskets in the fourth quarter -- and all three were clutch. He sank Detroit's first 3 of the game after seven misses that pulled the Pistons within one; another jumper that kept the deficit at one; and a 15-footer that gave them an 84-82 lead.
Iverson, who played 33 minutes as he tries to work his way into game shape, tied it for his first big shot in his second stint with the Sixers.
The Sixers blew a prime shot at going ahead when they missed two easy looks at the basket, the second one a tip by Samuel Dalembert that fell short.
That set the scene for Stuckey to come through. Stuckey's emergence was a big reason why the Pistons felt they could trade Chauncey Billups to Denver for Iverson last season.
Stuckey went up for the shot, but Iguodala was in his face to knock the ball free. Stuckey pounced on the loose ball and tossed up a little fade that went through for the winner.
Iverson deferred to Iguodala on the final shot. No good and the Sixers slumped home losers again.
"We got everything that we wanted on that last play and more," Iverson said. "The shot just didn't go in. I'll take that same shot every time. He had a good look."
The Sixers were counting on Iverson's marquee name to serve as a box office. They drew 20,000-plus in his homecoming Monday night, but attendance plummeted to 12,136 against the Pistons. That's just a tick more than the 11,965 they averaged in their first eight home games.
Iverson blocked the first shot of the game, stripped Ben Wallace of the ball at the top of the key that led to a Sixers basket, and intercepted a pass as he was falling out of bounds during a frantic first quarter.
He's still looking to get his legs under him after long stretches of inactivity as a non-factor until the fourth.
Iverson shed no tears nor did he exchange emotional hugs in his first game against the Pistons. He complained last season once the Pistons made him a reserve and eventually had his season cut short because of a back injury.
He did not play in the postseason and the Pistons let his $20-plus million contract expire.
Jerebko finished with 17 points, Jason Maxiell had 12 and Wallace grabbed 12 rebounds.
Dalembert had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Sixers and Brand scored 17 points.
Allen Iverson and the Detroit Pistons tightened up on defense to end their losing streak and prolong the agony of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Iverson scored 27 points and helped Detroit limit Memphis to just four shots in the final quarter on the way to an 87-79 victory over the Grizzlies on Monday, ending the Pistons longest losing streak in five seasons.
Rasheed Wallace scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half to help bring Detroits five-game skid to an end.
I think thats what made our offense easy, Iverson said. We were able to shut them down by helping each other on the defensive end. We just didnt leave a guy out there on an island. We helped each other a lot and we did a lot of talking on defense.
The Grizzlies, who lost their sixth straight and for the 14th time in 16 games, missed 10 of their final 12 shots. They didnt score after Mike Conleys driving layup with 2:56 left.
You cant take anything away from those guys, Iverson said. They missed some shots they can make. But we just got it done down the stretch. We did everything we needed to do.
Iverson and Wallace took over to score Detroits final 10 points in the last five minutes after the Grizzlies tied the game at 77.
Wallace hit two free throws and Iverson followed with jump shots on consecutive possessions to make it 83-77. Wallace added two more free throws with 40 seconds left and Iverson made two more with 24 seconds to go for the final margin.
In the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies were 4-of-20 and didnt make a shot in the games final 2:55.
O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 15 points apiece and rookie center Marc Gasol had 12 points and 13 rebounds.
We got some good looks down the stretch, we just couldnt put it in the hole, Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said. We missed a couple of layups and wide-open shots here and there (and) Wallace was a good force inside on O.J. Mayo.
Memphis failed to score 90 points for the fifth time during its six-game losing streak, but started the second half as if it would end its struggles.
The Grizzlies had a 12-4 run late in the third quarter to take a 69-67 lead into the fourth. Memphis, which hadnt led since early in the second quarter, got a 3-pointer from Gay and a technical free throw from Mayo to tie the game at 65 with 1:56 left in the third quarter.
A high-flying dunk by Hakim Warrick tied the game again at 67 about a minute later and a 15-foot jumper by Darrell Arthur put the Grizzlies up two lead going into the fourth.
We kind of collapsed at the end and they really picked it up, Gay said. Allen picked it up and Rasheed really picked up his defense. Rasheed has been around. Hes won championshihps and he knows what to do, especially in late-game situations.
Notes
Memphis scored only 17 points in the first quarter. The Grizzlies are 0-15 this season when they fail to score at least 20 in the opening period. Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, the teams leading scorer at 19.4 points per game, did not attempt a shot in the second quarter. Detroits Tayshaun Prince, who went 14-for-27 in the teams past two games, was 2-for-12.
