📍 Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok

The stunning sunrise views at Rainforest Skywalk, Sandakan the nature city: is the most popular attraction in the Rainforest Discovery Centre. The longest and solidly built canopy walkway in Sabah. There are three main towers there; Bristlehead, Trogon and Hornbill Towers. Along the skywalk, you can read and learn about the many animals that live high in the trees. If you are lucky, you will see a wide variety of mammals and birds in their natural habitat. The Rainforest Skywalk will surely be the best place to relax yourself, being away from the bustle of the city.
If you are a nature lover, this place should be on your #bucketlist. Hopefully, we will recover from #HapusCovid19 and get to Embrace the Nature like before.

My time at #AJourneyToFreedom has not only deepened my love for elephants and all animals, I have also become educated on agriculture and human spirit. Did you know that deforestation for farming of introduced species like strawberries, corn and beetroot is ruining the lives of the elephants and people in rural Thailand?
Only 20 years ago elephants were able to roam free in the rainforest as each family only had a small plot of land which they used to provide food for their families. Now farming has turned into big business with pesticide companies paying these poor people to destroy the rainforest to grow species that can only survive with massive amount of fertilizers. These farmers live extremely hard lives with very little money not to mention the exposure to harsh chemicals on a daily basis. I watched young mothers working in the fields for 10-12 hours per day carrying their small children around on their back breathing in toxic chemicals. So we can enjoy strawberries at a cheap cost all year around.
Introduced species like this can’t survive here in the dry season so badly laid pipes run through out the rainforest. This causes allot of trouble when trying to release elephants back to their natural habitat. Elephants have excellent hearing so they are attracted to the sounds of the running water and then they accidentally breaks the pipes. As a result farmers loose crops and this doesn’t end well for elephants or anyone.
This trip has taught me to ask questions, learn where things come from. Question the consequences that will be subjected to others due to what I choose to put in my body. It’s terribly sad that at this point in time we need to think of these things but we can create change. We are creating change already in our environment slowly with recycling and awareness let’s work together to change the lives of animals and farmers too! We have the power to make this happen
