Great work from Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation partners Ten Strands on their commitment to bringing environmental literacy to California’s 6.2 million K–12 students.
On June 27th, in a landmark victory for environmental literacy, Governor Jerry Brown approved the California 2017–18 Budget with a one-time $4,000,000 funding allocation for environmental literacy.
Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction stated, “We are pleased that the governor and the Legislature have provided funds specifically to promote and expand environmental literacy. The budget enhances and strengthens the California Regional Environmental Education Community Network (CREEC), which connects teachers to environmental education organizations around the state that help engage and prepare students to face the environmental issues and challenges in the 21st century.”
A big THANK YOU to Senator Ben Allen for championing the issue, Governor Jerry Brown, Kevin de León, Speaker Anthony Rendon and all the other legislators that helped make this happen. Also, a big thank you to the more than 130 organizations and individuals that sent support letters, volunteers that gathered tens of thousands of signatures on petitions, and critical phone calls that were made to our legislators—collectively we secured a big win for California students.
