福特上週宣布，過去10年在印度不僅沒有獲利，還倒虧了超過20億美元（新台幣574億元），並表示印度對新車的需求弱於預期，將依序關閉西部古吉拉特邦薩南德（Gujarat）和南部城市欽奈（Chennai ）的製造業務，且將影響4000個工作。
福特執行長Jim Farley表示，為了保持集團持續獲利、成長，這個決定雖然艱難但必須要做。
其實退出印度的汽車製造商，並不只有福特，大多數歐美汽車大廠都很難在此佔有一席之地。《華爾街日報》報導指出，目前印度汽車市場由日本鈴木（Suzuki）、韓國現代（Hyundai）兩家汽車廠掌控，且站穩腳步，兩家公司合計佔新車銷量的60%。
根據印度汽車經銷商協會聯合會的數據顯示，儘管福特在印度已經有30年的歷史，但其上（9）月的市場份額達到1.4%，完全無法與鈴木、現代所生產的小型、經濟實惠的汽車車主導；又受當地車市成長不佳，很難打入市場。
