In this episode, we went down to Hand in Hand Restaurant at Boat Quay to demolish a Dumpling Challenge! Hand in Hand is a restaurant that serves a variety of Chinese cuisine including Peking Duck and Fried Rice, but are renowned for their Xiao Long Bao and Dumplings. They have 2 outlets in Singapore, with the one at Boat Quay actually specialising in Peking Duck.
For this challenge, I ordered 10 servings each of their Dumplings and Xiao Long Bao, and told them to keep them coming. I started with the Dumplings, which were bigger than most dumplings I have had in Singapore. They were filled with shrimp and leek, with noticeable chunks of shrimp dotted throughout each dumpling. As they were fried, they were pleasantly crunchy on the outside while moist and juicy on the inside. The filling-to-wrapper ratio was very generous, which is particularly unexpected for such a large dumpling. Dipped in soya sauce, they were a treat to eat and I was relishing every bite.
Next, I tried their famous Xiao Long Bao. Steamed to perfection, each ball of joy was filled with a soupy, savoury filling that explodes in your mouth when you bite into them. As Xiao Long Bao are generally small in size, they easily fit entirely into your mouth and can be devoured quickly. Topped with soya sauce and ginger, they are the quintessential Chinese snack food suitable for most palates. Hand in Hand lives up their reputation of being an excellent Dumpling and Xiao Long Bao restaurant and my usually light-eating crew voraciously ate dozens of them.
Naturally, it became difficult towards the end even with the help I was getting, but this was one of the rare occasions where I enjoyed the bulk of the challenge and would certainly visit again for regular meal. This place would certainly be on my list of best Dumplings and Xiao Long Bao in Singapore.

For this episode, I devoured 50 Otah Buns from Soul Shiok! for a charity challenge! Soul Shiok! is a homegrown Otah Bun kitchen that delivers freshly made Otah Buns to your doorstep. The Otah Buns are made fresh with a spiced mackerel filling.
For this challenge, an anonymous donor challenged me to consume 50 Otah Buns in one go, and if I did it, he would donate $800 to Assisi Hospice. Assisi Hospice provides palliative care for patients and families that preserves their dignity and quality of life. Patients of any race, faith and financial position are cared for by their team of specialist doctors, nurses, allied health and pastoral care professionals. When faced with life limiting illnesses, their patients receive medical care, as well as psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care.
The Otah Buns were surprisingly plump with a generous amount of filling per bun. They were distinctively spiced, with a good amount of spiciness and notes of lemongrass and curry leaves. As is traditional, they were wrapped in banana leaves for additional aroma. The filling had decently sized chunks of mackerel in them.
With such high stakes, I did not let Assisi Hospice down and completed the challenge, pushing through the heat. I am glad that they will be receiving their much needed $800 donation, but please consider helping them out yourself by chipping in what you can. Last day to host my husbands dad and we are taking him out treating him to some good eats. He's a very simple man and doesn't really enjoy the finer cuisines so it was probably best to take him to some quick and easy establishment for dining. Hubby on the other hand enjoyed most of the food. Especially sushi at my favorite restaurant Sugarfish! He devoured all the goods right in front of me which is so rude! It's ok I have a few more months until I'm off this restricted pregnancy diet!
