西蒙波娃本句話，主要在提醒讀者，女性時常不被當成具有實質作為能力的主體，而是需要仰賴服裝、打扮，去體現自己的社會地位、引人注目。透過服裝得以遮掩身體、凸顯曲線，這些功能並不是幫助女性成為獨立的個體，而是被男性注目、引起男性慾望的客體。因此，西蒙波娃並不是在鼓勵女性仰賴外貌生存，而是在描述當時的社會處境。
