[Undressing the Big Verticals: Finding Disruption Strategies in Greater Southeast Asia]
Huge businesses online and offline wear a facade of dominance. In a world where software and cloud storage is cheap compared to even five years ago, these facades are just facades.
Any smart founder who can understand a niche market and its customers, can disrupt these businesses by offering a much better experience to a global set of users, simply by showing that the emperors wear no clothes.
Take a look at the first photo. Each of the eight startup companies in the first image were taken out of the listings page (literally) of online classifieds business Craigslist, depicted in the second picture. This platform's offerings became so big and varied that it suffered from entropy.
The markets tapped into by these startups are bigger than what Craigslist alone could utilize. Meaning that the gold threads Craigslist was wearing were really just a myth. As submarkets became exploitable, startup founders started picking them off.
These two images offer great insights for founders in Greater Southeast Asia, where businesses are sometimes conservatively managed, and where conglomerates and gigantic industry players operate in large local markets.
This is because the new companies do one niche thing very well dating; food; home-sharing, etc. In a mobile-use heavy market, people love these apps. The focused offerings and their ease of use make them fun to use, and they solve problems quickly and efficiently.
Why does this happen? What should founders in GSEA do with this information?
1. There are two reasons why this happens. First, big platforms trying to do everything for everyone will find it hard to manage all of the areas of the business. It's a result of organizational entropy. Consumers in a diverse global software environment will be easily distracted by new choices that big organizations cannot exploit in a fast way.
It also happens because founders using cheaper and more agile software tools can find niche areas in big platforms that they can exploit much more quickly, and offer to consumers using a better user experience. They understand the needs of the niche customer better. They find ways to make it interesting and engaging.
After all, swiping left and right on Tinder is actually really fun and an engaging use of time. Right?
2. Founders in GSEA are working in a region where it should be relatively easy to find big industry players in the market and find ways of disrupting their existing dominance.
In a region that is still relatively conservative in business compared to the rest of the world, and where large conglomerate players usually dominate the local markets, software disruption is primed and ready.
If you would like to test out exploits and software platform ideas in niche areas dominated by big industry players in a gigantic market, check out our accelerator class #20.

Most of you may already know that I am from Borneo Island, a very special part of the world and I'm super proud of it!
Borneo Island, is the third largest island in the world (just after Greenland and Papua) and is an island that is shared between 3 countries, Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak) and Indonesia (Kalimantan), and Brunei, tapi kita satu rumpun ya? 😊
Borneo's rainforest is also one of the oldest rainforest in the world, about 140 million years old, meaning it is rich with so many rare habitats, endangered animals and many more resources, which also means that we too go through a lot of challenges in sustaining all the things that make it beautiful.
Everytime I get to come back to my motherland, and am able to be in the forest and be reminded how small us humans really are, as I look at the gigantic work of beauty Mother Nature has created for us, I can't help but see even more so how fickle us humans are... Humans are the same people who aim to destroy and gain, but humans are also ones who try to protect and sustain our Mother Earth.
Having lived in big cities for most of my young adult and adult life, I am truly grateful to have a place like Borneo to check in to, everytime I need me a reality check and to recalibrate my bearings so I can navigate through life itself.
Have you reconnected with Nature recently?
If you haven't, please do, whether it be around a body of water, lakes, rivers or beaches, or just simply taking a stroll or a hike and look up, and keep your phones aside... Notice little things, notice what a miracle it is that we're all living on this big ball of gas that's floating in space, and this is the only home we will ever know, and all it does is give and give, and how sometimes all we do is take and take.
The Earth isn't a credit card... We all pay for it somehow.
As individuals, all we need to do is start by doing the little things we can to make ourselves feel good and better about taking care of this home of ours.
I love you all, and Mother Nature loves us all too. And she reminds us of it everyday, with just giving. And sometimes she 'leaves' little reminders... Haha. ;) Much 💚,
Zee

🇲🇲Shwezigon Pagoda of Bagan has an interesting legend. It's built by King Anawrahta, the founder of the great Pagan Dynasty in the 11th century.
According to the legend, King Anawrahta selected the site for building this pagoda by sending a white elephant mounted with a frontal bone relic of the Buddha to roam freely with the declaration that wherever the elephant stopped would be the site for building the pagoda. The elephant finally stopped over a dune which was chosen as the site for erecting the pagoda, and hence the name Shewzigon pagoda meaning "pagoda on a dune" in Burmese.
It looks really golden, but the monetary value is quite different from Shwedagon in Yangon. This is covered by copper, not gold.
One can easily get pagoda overdosed in ancient city Bagan, as it has thousands of 8 to 10 centuries old stupas and temples all over the place. But this gigantic golden structure is indeed quite impressive @ Bagan, Myanmar
