✏Behind the scenes, however, being a princess wasn’t as ✏glamorous as it seemed. In a documentary that ✏aired in October 2019, Meghan said that adjusting to royal life had been hard, and that the intense scrutiny of Britain’s ✏tabloid media was 🔎taking a toll on her mental and physical health. But the biggest shock was still to come. In January 2020, after returning from a six-week stay in Canada, Harry and Meghan announced that they would be stepping away from their duties as senior royals—a move dubbed “Megxit” by the tabloid media.

While there was much ✏speculation about Harry and Meghan’s motives at the time, the reasons became clear in a ✏bombshell March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey in Montecito, California, where the couple now live in a recently purchased $14 million mansion. In the interview, Meghan said that the great pressure she was under caused her to have suicidal thoughts. “I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she said. Yet when she asked the palace staff about seeking treatment, she was told that it “wouldn’t be good for the institution.” Perhaps even more shocking, Meghan revealed that within the royal family, there were “concerns and conversations about how dark Archie’s skin might be when he’s born.”
雖然當時對哈利梅根此舉背後的動機有諸多臆測，但真正的理由隨著2021年三月兩夫婦向歐普拉爆料後水落石出。錄製此訪談的地點剛好位在兩夫婦最近以1400萬美元購買的豪宅，加州蒙特斯托。訪談中梅根表示，巨大壓力使她萌生自殺念頭。「我就是不想活了。」然而她向王室工作人員尋求協助時，卻僅被告知「這對王室不利。」更令人震驚的是，梅根透露，王室成員對於亞契的膚色會不會太黑有諸多疑慮。
In a statement released after the Oprah interview, Queen Elizabeth said, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some ✏recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
隨著歐普拉訪談秀播出之後，伊莉莎白女王二世做出回應：「他們所提出的問題令人關切，尤其是種族問題。雖然部分回憶可能彼此有所出入，但王室會認真看待並私下處理。」
