Have you seen the film Dark Waters?
The film is based on the 2016 New York Times Magazine article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare," which describes Robert Bilott's case against the chemical manufacturing corporation DuPont after they contaminated a town with unregulated chemicals.
Robert Bilott put his career, his family, everything on the line to win justice for tens of thousands if not millions of people. It is because of people like him, people who continue to speak out and take action against injustice, that our society continues to improve. Thank you, Mr. Bilott.
Here’s a Times article that describes both the film and its portray of Mr. Bilott’s struggle to bring justice. I highly recommend the film.

★★★★★★★★★★★★
Rob Bilott, a corporate lawyer-turned-environmental crusader, doesn’t much care if he’s made enemies over the years. "I’ve been dealing with this for almost three decades," he says. "I can’t really worry about if the people on the other side like me or not."
•a corporate lawyer 企業律師
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Bilott used to be on the other side. The Todd Haynes-directed movie Dark Waters, tells the story of how the lawyer switched allegiances. As happened in real life, the movie depicts Ruffalo’s Bilott as a lawyer who defends large chemical companies before he is approached for help in 1998 by Wilbur Tennant, a West Virginia farmer whose land was contaminated by chemical giant DuPont. Inflamed by that injustice, and the complicity of local authorities, the lawyer risks his career as he embarks on a decades-long legal siege of one of America’s most powerful corporations.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
He works, at first, on Tennant’s behalf, then pursues a class action suit representing around 70,000 people living near a chemical plant that allegedly contaminated drinking water with PFOA, a toxic chemical used in the production of Teflon. In recent years, studies have correlated long-term exposure to PFOA with a number of illnesses, including some types of cancer.
•on behalf of sb/in behalf of sb; on sb's behalf/in sb's behalf
•a chemical plant 化學工廠
★★★★★★★★★★★★
In 2017, Bilott won a $671 million settlement on behalf of more than 3,500 plaintiffs. Those people claimed they had contracted diseases, among them kidney cancer and testicular cancer, from chemicals DuPont allegedly knew may have been dangerous for decades, and allowed to contaminate their drinking water anyway.
•contract a disease 患病、染病
★★★★★★★★★★★★
In Dark Waters, Haynes emphasizes the seemingly endless fight taken up by Bilott, as DuPont brings its considerable resources to bear to defend itself over the course of two decades. According to one analyst, the film’s potential to raise awareness about these issues could have a serious effect on some chemical companies’ bottom lines. But for the real Rob Bilott, the work of taking the industry to court is far from over. In October 2018, the lawyer filed a new lawsuit against several companies, including 3M, Arkema, and Chemours, a manufacturer spun off from DuPont in 2015. That ongoing case is seeking class action status, and was initially brought on behalf of Kevin Hardwick, a firefighting veteran of 40 years who used fire-suppression foams and firefighting equipment containing a class of chemicals known as PFAS, or polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFOA is one type of PFAS chemical).
•raise awareness about…
•far from over 遠遠不夠
★★★★★★★★★★★★
PFAS chemicals are used in products ranging from waterproof jackets to shaving cream, and they can leach into water supplies in areas where they are disposed of or used in fire suppression (in particular on military bases, where they have been used for years). According to Bilott’s complaint, studies currently suggest that PFAS is present in the blood of around 99% of Americans. The class of chemicals has broadly been linked to immune system disruption, while PFOA specifically has been found to be associated with cancers and other diseases. Bilott’s newest lawsuit, as with his prior cases, alleges that these companies knew for decades that PFAS chemicals, specifically PFOA, could be linked to serious health problems, and that they still assured the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other U.S. government regulators that PFAS exposures were harmless.
•range from…to…
•be linked to 與~有關
•be associated with 與~相關
•exposure (n.)
★★★★★★★★★★★★
"What we’re hearing once again from those companies that put those chemicals out there, knowing that they would get into the environment and into our blood, is that there’s insufficient evidence to show that they present risks to humans who are exposed," explains Bilott. "These companies are going to sit back and say, we’re entitled to…use you as guinea pigs, yet those of you who are exposed are somehow the ones who are going to have to prove what these 'chemicals' do to you."
★★★★★★★★★★★★
"If we can’t get where we need to go to protect people through our regulatory channels, through our legislative process, then unfortunately what we have left is our legal process," says Bilott. "If that’s what it takes to get people the information they need and to protect people, we’re willing to do it."

‘A Note to Harmonica Folks’
What’s next?
Since the day I was born, I have known the most prestigious harmonica competition in the world, The World Harmonica Festival (WHF). Every harmonicist around me see this as the olympics of harmonica, especially when they are both held once every four years.
My father’s ensemble King’s Harmonica Quintet was one of the very first few Asians harmonicist that appeared in the competition in Germany after the format of the competition turned from taped recording to live performance. In 1997, 3 years after I was born, they won their ‘World Championship’ in the WHF. I witnessed it.
It was a historical moment not only because was it a massive honour to be crowned in such reputable competition, it was the period when Asian harmonicists were approved by the Western.
Since then, the global harmonica community started to merge and interact. While harmonicists from the West continue to develop their artistry and career under a relatively strong cultural foundation for instrumental music, harmonica music to be exact, by virtue of the legends such as Tommy Reilly, Larry Adler, Toots Thielemans, Asians harmonicists struggle to further their artistry without the corresponding cultural foundation. A market for harmonica music in Asia simply do not exist.
Nevertheless, Asian culture values diligence and discipline. With the competition as the highest possible way to be rewarded as we develop our artistry, countless players began working day and night towards this very, if not only, visible goal.
Up till this day, you’d be surprised if there aren’t any Asian standing on the prizing podium in the international harmonica festivals. According to a Facebook post of the renowned Taiwanese Harmonicist in 2013, Lee Hsiao-ming, ‘If you show up at a harmonica festival, you can easily be surrounded by a group of ‘World Champion’s all queuing up for that plate at the buffet.’ Be him a chord harmonica player from an ensemble, a soloist at the open category or a 10 year old kid from the youth category… all claiming to be the ‘World Champion’.
Now the question is, Is the ‘World Champion’ in 1997 still the same ‘World Champion’ now? Or are we unconsciously abusing the only system we can count on to gain qualification to ourselves?
As Gerhard, the president of the World Harmonica Festival, has also repeatedly emphasized before, champion of any event of the WHF competition should NOT claim himself / herself as the World Champion. It should properly be addressed as Champion of the " XXX event" of the World Harmonica Festival.
While varies important figures in the global harmonica community started participating in this fierce debate, I was curious about the root of this controversy.
Would anyone accused Usian Bolt of abusing his Olympic gold medals to pursue further in his career? Would anyone question Danill Trifonov’s artistry if he claim himself the winner of Chopin Piano Competition? Could Michael Jordon ever obtain a ‘fake’ NBA championship?
Obviously, there is nothing wrong about winning and taking pride off an award. The real issue instead lies in the opposite side of the question. Is the existing harmonica competition rigorous enough to qualify the winner a ‘World Champion’? Or, should a ‘World Champion’ even exist in a musical setting?
In order to understand what a truly rigorous musical competition is, we began digging into the competitions of all instruments at the highest calibre. For instance, when studying the difference of the format of the International Tchaikovsky Competition with the World Harmonica Festival, we have realised how far behind the harmonica competition is constructed. I won the Solo Championship in the World Harmonica Festival 2013 only by playing a total of 10 minute of music. While a contestant at the qualifying round at the Tchaikovsky Competition would already have to prepare up to 30 minute of music. Meanwhile, not a single competition in the classical world would claim themselves the competition of the best. It seems like the title ‘World Champion’ could only be justified when it’s within sports, where the result can be calculated and compared. We can’t calculate art.
We have came a long way since the harmonica was invented 150 years ago. And I’m extremely excited to see new generation of player arising from all around the world. Nevertheless, while festivals are taking a pause during covid, we should make the best use of this period of time and rethink about how we could contribute to the culture and further bring our instrument to the next level.
So, what’s next? 🤔

Finally reduced to this 12TB material.
I also forgot how many nights there were. I seat in front of my computer adjusting every details of the photo again and again. And often unconsciously find that the sky outside the window is slightly bright.

On any other night, Allen Iverson would have begged to go back in the game. On Monday, he was begging for extra rest.
Playing with flu-like symptoms, Iverson scored all 24 of his points in the first half and then happily sat out the fourth quarter as the Philadelphia 76ers defeated the New Orleans Hornets 103-91.
"I didn't feel good at shootaround," said Iverson, who told coach Maurice Cheeks he was ailing as he prepared to go back in for the fourth period. "He just told me to come back, and fortunately everything worked out fine."
Iverson, the NBA's second-leading scorer at 32.5 points per game, shot 8-of-22 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free-throw line. He also had nine assists as the Sixers (7-5) snapped a two-game skid. It was the first time this season that Iverson failed to score at least 25 points.
"I didn't feel good at all," he said. "I was dizzy out there for virtually the whole game. Once I stopped playing at halftime and came back in, I just never felt right. I think I'm coming down with something. I want to get home and take some medication and see how I feel in the morning."
Iverson was one of six Sixers to score in double figures. John Salmons scored 19 points, Andre Iguodala added 15 points and Chris Webber and Steven Hunter each had a double-double. Webber had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Hunter had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kyle Korver scored 10.
"I knew Allen wasn't feeling well and that I had to pick it up some," Salmons said. "He was encouraging us the whole fourth quarter to keep it up. It's a good feeling to play so well with Allen getting some rest."
The Sixers have been sporadic on defense this season, giving up an average of 106 points, 28th in the league entering the game. But their defense was much better from the start as they held the Hornets to 42 percent shooting in the first half en route to a 65-47 lead.
"We were more aggressive in our defense and the fact that we played more zone than we normally have," Cheeks said. "We were active in our zone, we were talking in our zone and we played a little more full-court defense."
David West scored 20 points, J.R. Smith added 17 and Speedy Claxton had 15 for the Hornets (4-6), who won their previous two games. The Hornets didn't win their fourth game until Jan. 11 last season.
"We were happy with two straight wins and that was satisfying enough for us instead of trying to come in here and get one against a very good basketball team," coach Byron Scott said.
The Sixers extended their lead to 83-63 after the third quarter and were never seriously threatened by the Hornets, who shot 5-of-21 from the field in that quarter and 31-of-78 (40 percent) for the game.
The Sixers also outrebounded the Hornets 50-38.
"They just got going," West said. "You can't let guys like that get comfortable."
Game notes
Sixers center Samuel Dalembert, who has missed every game this season with a right quad strain, said he expects to join the team soon after Thanksgiving. ... Attendance has started to dwindle a bit for the Sixers. They drew 12,452 against the Hornets, slightly more than the 12,211 that showed up for their Nov. 12 game against Toronto, which was their smallest crowd since the 1998-99 season. "We've got to earn them back," Cheeks said.

There`s no reason to play much in the 2nd half when you drop 24 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds in the 1st half and your team is up by double figures. Iverson still impressive even with flu-like symptoms

Rasheed Wallace could not miss for three quarters and his teammates could not miss in the fourth.
Wallace scored 30 points and the Portland Trail Blazers scored on their first 10 possessions of the final period, snapping a season-high six-game losing streak with a 96-88 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Wallace made 13-of-20 shots, including 4-of-4 3-pointers. The two-time All-Star flashed his inside-outside game and helped the Trail Blazers open an 11-point lead early in the third quarter.
"It was just a good game, everybody out there playing hard," a terse Wallace said. "That's all. Nothing new."
"Rasheed is an All-Star and what he did tonight was no surprise," 76ers guard Eric Snow said. "You've just got to try to limit his shots."
The 76ers fought back within 71-70 early in the final period before Wallace made a 3-pointer to start a 19-5 surge. Working against the stingiest defense in the NBA, the Blazers simply were unstoppable.
Wallace sat for most of the decisive surge but it did not seem to matter. Damon Stoudamire made two straight jumpers and a layup, Shawn Kemp drilled two long jumpers and Derek Anderson made a pair before two free throws by Ruben Patterson gave the Blazers a 90-75 lead with 5:49 remaining.
Stoudamire scored 19 points and Kemp had 10 for Portland, which shot 51 percent (42-of-82) and looked nothing like the team that was mired in its longest losing streak in over six years.
"It depends on how many minutes are available," said Kemp, who has come off the bench and struggled most of the season. "It's up to me to make the most of it."
Stoudamire also had 11 assists as the Blazers did a terrific job of sharing the ball. They had 33 assists and repeatedly passed ahead of Philadelphia's defensive rotations.
"We finally put a win together," Stoudamire said. "We have to play like that every game."
"That's the way we're going to win games," Portland coach Maurice Cheeks said. "It was probably the most heady game we played all year. We made the right decisions. We seemed to play smart. We played under control."
It was a sweet win for Cheeks, who was a player and assistant coach in Philadelphia for nearly 20 years.
"That wasn't easy," Cheeks said. "I was having fun with them. They were having fun with me."
"It was tough," said Sixers coach Larry Brown, who had Cheeks as an assistant for four years. "I thought if we won it wouldn't be something I'd enjoy."
Derrick Coleman scored 21 points and Allen Iverson added 18 for the 76ers, who completed a marathon seven-game, 12-day road trip at 3-4. The Sixers fell to 8-13 on the road but do not travel further west than Milwaukee for the rest of the season.
"We learned a lot about each other as a team and accomplished something as a team, not as individuals," Iverson said. "It's been tough playing on the road, so it will be good playing in our own gym."
Philadelphia has lost nine of its last 11 games in Portland.
The Sixers scored the first 10 points of the game, but Wallace scored 14 points in the opening period as the Blazers stormed back to take a 27-24 lead.
A jumper by Coleman gave Philadelphia a 42-41 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left in the first half before Wallace made two jumpers in a 9-1 burst gave Portland a 50-43 lead. Consecutive jumpers by Stoudamire opened the third quarter.
Iverson's jumper cut the deficit to 67-65 late in the period. A 3-pointer by Aaron McKie opened the final quarter and made it 69-68.
Scottie Pippen had nine points and nine assists and Patterson and Dale Davis scored eight points each for the Blazers, who held a 46-30 rebounding edge.
McKie scored 17 points and Snow added 15 and seven assists for the Sixers, who shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82).
