Yesterday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day. As the White House statement said, ‘On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we hold in our hearts the memory of every man, woman, and child who was abused, tortured, or murdered during the Holocaust. To remember these men and women—those who perished and those who survived—is to strive to prevent such suffering from happening again. Any denial or indifference to the horror of this chapter in the history of humankind diminishes all men and women everywhere and invites repetition of this great evil. We remain committed to the post-Holocaust imperative, “Never Again.”’ We also recognize the brave men and women whose work and whose courage protected countless lives from Nazi atrocities. Among those heroes is Ho Feng Shan, known as the “Chinese Schindler.” Ho served as the Consul General in Vienna from 1938-1940. He himself issued visas to tens of thousands of Jews – in defiance of his superior’s orders – allowing them to escape Nazi-occupied Austria. In the United States and other nations, memorials stand as continual reminders of the horror of the Holocaust and the importance of confronting the evils that brought it about. The United Nations designated January 27 — the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps — as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The eight memorials shown below represent a fraction of the statues, museums, gardens and other places of remembrance throughout the world that honor the 6 million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism.
