The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) is the unexpected winner of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
Thanks to their work, the first treaty to ban nuclear arms was reached at the UN in July. But what must happen next to bring about the destruction of all nuclear weapons?
*"We are trying to help nuclear-armed states by making nuclear weapons more unattractive, more difficult to maintain, and basically more of a hassle," says Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of ICAN*
Although she concedes that it will be a very long process to rid the world completely of nuclear weapons, Fihn remains optimistic:
"Things that seemed unlikely in the past suddenly happen, and when people's mindsets change about things like civil rights, women's right to vote, slavery.... suddenly progress happens very, very fast."
"We are making that first step to making that change of mindset."
