#dish跟plate在英國是不同東西
🇺🇸美國生活諺語:dish篇🍽
1⃣ a dish (though it's a bit old-fashioned)
2⃣ Revenge is a dish best served cold
3⃣ dish it out; sb. can dish it out, but not take it
4⃣ dish the dirt (on); dish on
--
When we say “wash the dishes,” we mean all the tableware, and even the silverware. But in English, whereas plates are usually used to eat from, dishes, which are flatter than bowls, and not as flat as plates (and sometimes have lids), are used to serve or cook food. And a dish can also refer to the food that is served in the dish. Now let’s learn some other dish-related idioms!
我們知道 wash the dishes「洗碗」是泛指洗所有的餐具,即使是銀製餐具也算在內。但是在英國,plate跟dish則是兩種不同的東西,plate 是進餐時用的淺盤,而 dish 則是比碗淺但比 plate 深的深盤(有時還附蓋子),通常是裝盛菜餚出餐或烹煮食物用。dish 也可以指該道菜。說完了,接下來就來介紹跟 dish 一字有關的諺語吧。
You know that a serving of food can be called a dish, but what if you 1⃣call a person a dish? It means they’re sexy and attractive. This expression, which sounds a little old-fashioned these days, likely has it’s origins in comparing a person to a delicious dish of food. Ex: Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!
你知道一道菜可以用 a dish 稱之,但你叫一個人a dish又是怎麼回事?其實是說那個人性感吸引力十足,「是你的菜」。儘管這個表達放在現在已經有點過時,就跟拿一道菜來比喻一個人一樣過氣。如:Wow, she’s gorgeous—what a dish!(哇,那個妹有夠正的──是天菜。)
Besides food, what else can be served on dishes? Revenge! Have you ever heard the proverb, 2⃣“Revenge is a dish best served cold”? It means that revenge is most satisfying when one takes the time to plan it carefully and carry it out when your enemy least suspects it, rather than immediately after one is wronged. This expression has existed for hundreds of years, but it was made popular when it appeared in the 1982 movie, Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Ex: A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold.
除了食物,還有什麼可以裝在盤子上?仇恨!你有聽過俗語「君子報仇三年不晚」(Revenge is a dish best served cold)嗎?指與其立即復仇,花時間慢慢計畫再實行,讓敵人放下戒心之後再復仇,這樣會更令人滿足。1982年電影《星艦迷航記2: 星戰大怒吼》讓這個存在已經好幾百年的老俗語再次流行起來。如:A: How can you let him get away with treating you like that? 你怎麼能忍受他這樣對待你? B: I won’t, but revenge is a dish best served cold. 我不會繼續忍下去的,但是君子報仇三年不晚。
As a verb, dish means “to serve,” and is the basis of a number of expressions. To 3⃣“dish it out” means to criticize or insult, and is often used in the idiom, “sb. can dish it out, but not take it,” which is used to describe people who are quick to criticize others, but can’t take criticism themselves. Ex: A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.
dish當動詞指「上菜」,也延伸出好幾種諺語用法。dish it out指「批評,侮辱」,常出現在sb. can dish it out, but not take it.這個諺語中,指「愛批評他人卻批評不得的人」。如:A: I didn’t realize that Karen was so thin-skinned. 我不明白為什麼凱倫會這麼膚淺。B: Yeah. She can dish it out, but she can’t take it.是啊,她愛批評別人,但見不得別人批評她。
Another idiom with dish as a verb is 4⃣“dish the dirt (on),” which means to gossip about someone or something. Ex: Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt. The expression “dish on” also has the same meaning. Ex: Why are you always dishing on Patricia?
另一個dish當動詞的諺語是dish the dirt on,指「八卦某事或某人」。如Let’s sit down, have a drink and dish the dirt.(咱們坐下來喝杯茶聊八卦吧。)也可以用dish on表示:Why are you always dishing on Patricia?(為什麼你總是在八卦派翠西亞?)

🍽Tableware: Plates
🇺🇸美國生活諺語再開👉料理工具篇之「盤 plate」篇
在聊了這麼多跟 food 有關的生活用語之後,我們換個口味,來看看跟裝食物的容器:盤子plate有關的Idiom吧🤔
1⃣ have a lot of things on your plate
2⃣ have one’s plate full / have a full plate
3⃣ has/keeps (an amount of/all the) plates spinning
4⃣ blue plate special
5⃣ clean one’s plate
--
We’ve talked a lot about food, but what about the tableware we put it on (and in)? Are there idioms in English that make use of plates, bowls and cups? Of course there are!
我們之前已經聊夠了跟食物有關的諺語,那麼,放食物的碗盤跟杯子,是否也有諺語呢?當然有囉!
Let’s start off with plates. If you have a lot of food on your plate, it’s going to take a long time to finish, right? In fact, you may not even be able to finish it at all. So if you say you 1⃣ have a lot of things on your plate, it means you have a lot of things to deal with, or a lot of work to do. Ex: I’d like to help you out, but I have a lot on my plate right now. The same meaning can be expressed with 2⃣“have one’s plate full” or “have a full plate.” Ex: I have a full plate today, but I should have free time on Friday.
我們這禮拜先介紹盤子(plate)。如果你的盤中盛了一大堆食物,表示你得花很多時間吃完,是吧?你甚至根本吃不完。所以,如果你說 have a lot of things on the plate,就是表達「手頭上有很多事情要處理、完成」。如:I’d like to help you out, but I have a lot on my plate right now.(我很想幫你,但我現在手上有很多事要忙。)片語have one’s plate full或have a full plate也是表達相同意思,如:I have a full plate today, but I should have free time on Friday.(我今天超忙的,但我週五應該有空。)
Have you ever seen a circus act where a performer spins a number of plates on top of wooden poles? It looks challenging, doesn’t it? So if you say 3⃣ somebody has/keeps (an amount of/all the) plates spinning, it means they’re dealing with a number of different things at once. Ex: I don’t know how working mothers manage to keep so many plates spinning.
你曾經看過雜耍團有人用木棍頂著一堆盤子旋轉嗎?看起來很難吧?所以,如果你說某人has/keeps (an amount of/all the) plate spinning,就是說他們正在處理一堆棘手、難以處理的事情。如:I don’t know how working mothers manage to keep so many plates spinning.(我不知道全職媽媽怎麼能處理這麼多麻煩事。)
But some plate-related idioms are actually about food. If you go to a diner or cafe in the U.S. or Canada, you may see a 4⃣“blue plate special” item on the menu. This refers to a low-priced meal that usually changes daily. But why is it called a blue plate special? Is it served on a blue plate? In the 1920s and ’30s, it actually was served on a blue plate, which is where the name comes from. But these days the plate is more likely to be white. Ex: The diner across the street has a good blue plate special.
不過,有些跟碗相關的諺語倒是真的跟食物有關。如果你去到美國或加拿大的餐廳或簡餐店,你或許會在菜單上看到「藍盤特餐」。這指的是每天會換的低價餐點。但為什麼要叫這個名稱呢?事實上,在二零到三零年代時期,當時餐點事實上是用藍色盤子裝的,所以才有這名稱的由來。不過最近供餐的盤子都已經換成白色的了。如:The diner across the street has a good blue plate special.(對街餐廳供應的便宜特餐很好吃。)
And finally, let’s talk about cleaning your plate. If you think this is about washing the dishes, you’re wrong. 5⃣ To clean one’s plate means to eat all of the food on it. Ex: The dinner Mom made was so good that we all cleaned our plates.
最後來聊聊洗盤子(clean your plate)這件事。如果你以為我們真的是要聊洗碗,那你就錯了。clean one’s plate事實上是「把所有東西吃光」的意思。如:The dinner Mom made was so good that we all cleaned our plates.(老媽煮的晚餐太好吃了,大家都吃到碗底朝天。)

Tim Parks 警世文
濃縮版:
Reviewing any number of books in translation over the last thirty years, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no dominant approach in our age: accurate and inaccurate, fluent and clumsy, all translations seem to be equally praised and criticized (though rather more the former than the latter). Two opinions, however, do emerge as so universally held as scarcely to need articulating.
The first is that translation is always a good thing, politically, ethically, aesthetically. The second is that literary translation is not only entirely possible, but, somewhat surprisingly, that it can often match or even improve upon the quality of the original.
Turning to the academic world, one is struck by how rarely translations are carefully compared against originals, how little is said about language competence. Instead, if we consider the kind of texts regularly included in anthologies of translation theory...it’s not hard to see how a pervasive romantic idealism, mysticism even, comes to underwrite those effusive contemporary panegyrics that would have translations improving on their originals and saving humanity in the process.
What is exciting about translation, then, is not the notion that it has delivered a hundred percent...or that the entire world of human feeling can be made available to us in our own idiom—a fantasy that will only induce complacency—but its encouragement to move toward, or at least become aware of, what we do not know; translation as a wake-up call, and an instrument to spur us to more effort, not to have us sit back and applaud another successful worldwide publishing phenomenon.
To close on a provocation, it’s perhaps worth observing that current enthusiasm for literary translation in the Anglo-Saxon world has come at the same time as a steep decline in language learning.
