We ascribe to the 80/20 rule—attributed as Pareto’s Principle, an economic principle. It states that for many events, 20 percent of the work yields 80 percent of the effects. Adapted for our purposes, 20 percent of all the exercise and movement choices yield 80 percent of the gains in strength and power development.
●SQUAT VARIATIONS—back squat, front squat, single-leg squat
●EXPLOSIVE MOVEMENTS—clean, snatch, jerk, push-press
●PUSHING AND PULLING—bench press, military press, pulls (clean and snatch), row variants
●LOW BACK AND POSTERIOR CHAIN—Romanian deadlift (RDL), hyperextension and reverse hyperextension, good morning
That very short list of fundamental lifts compromises our particular 20 percent. Although we dedicate much more than 20 percent of our programming to these basic lifts, there is no doubt that well over 80 percent of the results we have seen in our athletes can be attributed to mastering this handful of movements and lifts.
Made even simpler, placing the primary focus of your coaching on learning and refining your teaching of the fundamental lifts will yield far greater and more sustained gains in your athletes’ strength and power than many more complex and “comprehensive” programs.
Any additional lifts or movements should be considered assistance or accessory work, which serve to address specific needs or deficits. Those exercises make up just a fraction of our time, as they fill gaps, rather than form the base of training—in other words, to provide assistance. Too many coaches try to be creative in exercise selection and end up with a collection of movements and lifts that improve nothing to any significant level.
The fundamental movements of sport are squatting, jumping, running, bending, twisting, pushing, and pulling. By building proficiency in the quality, the stability and strength, and then the speed of those movements, we provide almost all of the sport specificity we need. This is how we put first things first, and spend the greatest amount of time and repetition on refining and strengthening movements.

I have decided to learn Japanese…again. Actually I have lived in Japan for a very long time, and I do already speak Japanese. However, I have decided to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (Level N1, the hardest Japanese testing level). My Japanese husband has offered to help me study, but as you can see from the video, the questions are so hard that even he can't figure some of them out! I have heard it said that Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to truly master, and studying for this test, I truly believe it! By the way, the test I refer to in this video is called the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). It is the main test used by companies and schools to determine a non-Japanese native speaker's true mastery of the language. The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has five levels, and I have decided to take N-1, the most difficult Japanese level. I started this JLPT journey last week, so please check out that video too if you're new to the channel. I discuss the test is greater detail in that video.

Good luck!!!

Tiny Corer Café is a not-for-profit English café project founded in 2011 by Ms Lan Huynh, a popular inspirational English teacher in town. The café is famous for its “English Speaking Happy Hour”, which happens on every Monday, Thursday and Saturday evening, starting from 7:00PM. This is the time when young locals, expats and tourists gather to help one another practice speaking English, share stories and make new friends.
After almost three years of operation, Tiny Corner Café has helped thousands of local students improve their confidence in speaking English as well as enhance their language’s proficiency. This café also acts as a meeting point, a connecting bridge between locals, expats and tourists in Can Tho. Unlike the floating markets and other typical tourist attractions, the “English Speaking Happy Hour” at Tiny Corner may be the only place that tourists can freely hang out with real locals and get to learn more about the Mekong’s people and their culture through many different interesting stories being told by multi-level English speakers.
The café currently opens for three nights only (Monday, Thursday and Saturday) and there is a small participation fee (20,000 to 30,000vnd) per head as to support the project to run. More information can be found on Tiny Corner’s facebook page.
