出生於218年前今天(1813年9月13日)的John Sedgwick是美國南北戰爭時代的人物，官拜將軍的他是戰事中北軍陣亡的最高軍事將領，這位大無畏的軍人總是身先士卒地親上火線打先鋒，John Sedgwick是在1864年的Battle of Spotsylvania Court House中殉難，慷慨赴義前留下一句傳誦千古、氣壯山河的遺言，彰顯自己絲毫不畏懼對手的氣概。
那句話是這樣說的：這個距離他們(指南軍)連大象都打不到(They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.)，有沒有下文不得而知，當場被子彈擊斃的John Sedgwick沒有機會繼續分享他老人家的人生智慧。
CHÚC MỪNG SINH NHẬT LẦN THỨ 48 CỦA HIP-HOP!
Vào ngày 11 tháng 8 năm 1973, Hip-Hop đã ra đời tại một buổi tiệc “Mừng Ngày Tựu Trường” (dịch từ: “Back To School Jam”) tại chung cư 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, khu vực Bronx, New York. Người chủ buổi tiệc là cậu bé 18 tuổi người Jamaica, tên là Clive Campbell (sau này mọi người hay gọi ông với nghệ danh DJ Kool Herc).
Ngày sinh của Hip-Hop được đánh dấu bằng việc DJ Kool Herc chơi phần nhạc nghỉ gồm trống và bass (tạm dịch từ: breakbeat) của các giai điệu funk và soul trên bộ sưu tập đĩa than của mình. Những bản nhạc điển hình như Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose của James Brown, It's Just Begun của Jimmy Castor và Melting Pot của Booker T. & M.G. Do một phần từ sự ảnh hưởng của James Brown, các vũ công tại buổi tiệc đều nhảy theo các vũ điệu của ông trên breakbeat mà từ đêm đấy khái niệm breakdancing, B-Boy và B-Girl đồng thời được hình thành.
Trong hơn 40 năm qua, Hip-Hop đã và đang ngày càng phát triển cũng như thống trị nhiều bảng xếp hạng âm nhạc trên toàn thế giới. Đối với những người yêu nhạc Hip-Hop đó không còn chỉ là âm nhạc đơn thuần mà còn là một lối sống, một nền văn hoá.
Cũng mới đây, vào ngày 29.7.2021 thì Thượng Nghị Viện Hoa Kỳ cũng đã thông qua nghị quyết S.Res.331 để công nhận ngày 11 tháng 8 sẽ là “Ngày Kỷ Niệm Hip-Hop”, bắt đầu từ tháng 8 năm 2021 này cũng sẽ là “Tháng Công Nhận Hip-Hop”, và kể từ tháng 11 năm 2021 sẽ là “Tháng Lịch Sử Của Hip Hop.”

米国上院は、8月11日を「National Hip Hop Celebration Day（ヒップホップ記念日）」に、また8月を「Hip Hop Recognition Month（ヒップホップ認識月間）」、11月を「Hip Hop History Month（ヒップホップ歴史月間）」にすることが全会一致で可決された。上院でヒップホップがこういった形で認められるのは初めてのこと。
8月11日は、1973年にクール・ハークと妹のシンディ・キャンベルが、ニューヨークのブロンクスにある1520 Sedgwick Avenueでパーティーを開き、ヒップホップの音楽と文化が誕生した歴史上重要な日と言われている。
また、ヒップホップと政治・社会関連ニュースとしては、先日5月20日、ブロンクス・ポイントにてユニバーサル・ヒップホップ・ミュージアム（Universal Hip Hop Museum）の建設が着工式が行われた。そこにはニューヨーク市長のビル・デブラシオ、ヒップホップ界のレジェンドであるNas、LLクールJ、ファット・ジョー、ブロンクス区長のルーベン・ディアス・ジュニア、ニューヨーク州議会議長のカール・ヒースティなど、多数の市の機関から、そしてヒップホップ界の著名人が参加した。
ユニバーサル・ヒップホップ・ミュージアムは、過去、現在、未来の地域および世界のラップミュージックと文化の歴史を祝い、保存する美術館で、2024年にオープンする予定だ。
起工式では、ブロンクス区のルーベン・ディアスJr.区長が、ユニバーサル・ヒップホップ・ミュージアムの資本キャンペーンを支援するために、区の資本予算から420万ドルを拠出することを発表。これは区長の在任期間中で最大規模の資金配分となる
